Chris Nilan pursued his career by playing inside the rink when he joined the youth hockey with the Greater Boston Youth Hockey League's Parkway team. As he landed a spot during the 1978 NHL Entry Draft, he was chosen to play for the Montreal Canadiens.
He led the Canadiens to win the Stanley Cup in 1986. Then, Nilan transferred to New York Rangers and Boston Bruins before he moved back to Canadiens on the latter part of 1991.
Nilan decided to retire from playing ice hockey, he spend most of his time working in the insurance industry. His love for the sport which urged him to return as an assistant coach for the New Jersey Devils and Chesapeake Icebreakers in 1996.
