Andrew Ference started his career when he joined the Western Hockey League’s Portland Winterhawks. After staying with the team for two seasons, he was chosen by the Pittsburgh Penguins as the 208th overall during the 1997 NHL Entry Draft.

During his first year with the Penguins, Ference splits his time to play for the team and its AHL affiliate, the Scranton Penguins where he did 28 points, 8 goals, 20 assists in 44 games.

In the middle of 2002-2003 season, he was traded to the Calgary Flames.¬†And during the 2004-2005 NHL lockout, Ference played for the Czech Republic’s HC Ceske Budejovice.
