Alexei Yashin started his career with the Avtomobilist Sverdlovsk. Eventually, he was promoted to Dynamo Moscow in 1991. A lot of hockey scouts were impressed with his performance on ice. Just before he finished his stint with the Dynamo, he was selected by the Ottawa Senators as the 2nd overall pick during the 1992 NHL Entry Draft.
He earned a nomination for the Calder Trophy and appointed as team captain during the 1998-1999 NHL season.
