Lovie Smith played as a defensive end and linebacker for Big Sandy High School’s football team where he earned all-state honors for three years. In college, he played for the Tulsa Golden Hurricane. He was a two-time All-American and the team’s linebacker and safety.

He pursued his coaching career after graduation in college. Smith was hired as a defensive coordinator at his hometown high school in 1980. A year later, he moved to Cascia Hall Preparatory School and worked as coach for its football team. From 1983, he began coaching linebackers for several universities such as University of Tulsa, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Arizona State University, and University of Kentucky.

Smith also served as a defensive back coach for University of Tennessee, and Ohio State University. He started his professional coaching career as a linebacker coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and stayed for five years with the team. Then, he was hired by the St. Louis Rams as a defensive coordinator.

In 2004, he became Chicago Bears’ head coach. During his tenure with the team, they won the NFC Championship in 2006, and NFC North in 2005, 2006 and 2010. Smith returned to the Buccaneers as the team’s 10th head coach in 2014.
