Chael Sonnen started his MMA career at age 19, in Vancouver, Washington where he defeated Ben Hailey. Shortly, he then defeated the future contender ICON Sport Middleweight Champion and Strikeforce Middleweight championship, Jason "Mayhem" Miller. Sonnen won his first six fights before he lost to Trevor Prangley. Through time, Sonnen has played for various promotions including Ultimate Fighting Championships, Bodog Fight, and World Extreme Cagefighting.

His most notable fight was with Anderson Silva who defeated him by catching him in a triangle armbar which made him tap out. Later, Sonnen claimed that he tapped out due to choking as opposed to being caught in the armbar. After his suspension due to extremely high level of testosterone/epitestosterone (T/E) ratio, Silva and Sonnen II was scheduled. For the second time, he was defeated via TKO by Silva.
