Throughout his entire career as a professional boxer, Spinks earned an overall record of 26 wins, three draws, and 17 losses. Fourteen of his wins were won via knockouts.

In February 1978, he defeated Muhammad Ali which won him the  undisputed world heavyweight championship. The same event won him the WBC, WBA and The Ring Heavyweight titles. The fight was considered as one of boxing history's biggest upsets. However, seven months later, Ali took back the title when Spinks lost in a 15-round fight via unanimous decision. Until Mike Tyson's arrival, he was considered as the "last undisputed heavyweight champion".

Among his other most notable fights was against Kip Kane whom he knocked on December 13, 1985 in New York City New York. This fight won him the WBC Continental Americas Heavyweight title which was later vacated. In a split decision, he again won the title in a fight against Jeff Jordan on April 28, 1987 which took place in Nagoya Japan.
