As a professional boxer, Clottey quickly rose to fame when he won his first 20 fights with 14 knockouts in the welterweight division. He has fought against Antonio Margarito where he lost in a controversial fight. On June 13, 2009, he faced Miguel Cotto for the WBO welterweight title at Madison Square Garden where he lost in a controversial split decision. He then fought Manny Pacquiao, a seven-division world champion, on March 13, 2010 in Arlington, Texas at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium. He lost to Pacquiao by unanimous decision.
