On his professional boxing career, Toney has set a record of 74 wins (45 via knockout), 3 draws, 2 no contests, and 7 losses out of his 86 boxing matches.

After his successful career in boxing, James Toney decided to pursue a career on mixed martial arts. To enhance his chance of joining the MMA, he was Juanito Ibarra and later on, Trevor Sherman took over as his coach. His debut fight was against Randy Couture, a certified hall of famer and a light heavyweight and heavyweight champion. The match ended after 3:19 seconds when Couture submitted to Toney.

In 1991 and 2003, he was named by Ring Magazine as the Fighter of the Year. On the same years, he received the same recognition from Boxing Writers Association of America. In 2003, he was again named by the Ring magazine as Comeback of the Year fighter.
