He is a former Major League Baseball (MLB) center fielder who played for the New York Mets in the late 1980s before playing for the Philadelphia Phillies in the early 1990s. Born Leonard Kyle Dykstra on February 10, 1963 in Santa Ana, California, he was signed by the Mets as the 13th round draft pick in 1981. He hit a walk-off home run in Game 3 of the 1986 National League Championship series versus the Houston Astros.

Dykstra was traded from the Mets to the Phillies along with Roger McDowell for Juan Samuel and Tom Edens in June 18, 1989. He started in the All-Star Game in 1990. He led the league in hits and finished fourth in the batting average. In the 1993 World Series against the Toronto Blue Jays, he hit .348 with four home runs. He was also a runner-up to Barry Bonds for National League MVP in 1993. He led the league in hits, walks and runs scored. He missed the last four months of the 1996 season and all of the 1997 and 1998 seasons due to recurring back injuries. After the 1998 season, he officially retired after 29 months after his last game.

In 2007, Lenny Dykstra bought a 6.5 acre property in Thousand Oaks, California from Wayne Gretzky for $18.5 million but lost the house in a Ventura County foreclosure sale in November 2010.
