Born in Waco, Texas on February 10, 1976, William Lance Berkman is the son of Cynthia Ann Thomas and Larry Gene Berkman, of Swedish descent. He graduated from Canyon High School in New Braunfels, Texas in 1994. He attended Rice University who plays on the Owls baseball team. He was named the 1997 National College Player of the Year, playing for the legendary Wayne Graham. He was also named a first team All-America by Collegiate Baseball Magazine, Baseball America and The Sporting News. Along with the rest of the Baseball American honourees, he was invited to visit teh White House and dine with then President Bill Clinton.
Berkman batted a collective .385 with 67 home runs and 272 RBI. In 1997, his 41 home runs rank third-most in the NCAA history. In the same year, he also made the all-time record book in RBI (2nd-134), slugging percentage (6th-1.031) and total base (4th-263) while leading the Rice Owls to their first College World Series appearance.
Lance Berkman is also known as “Fat Elvis” and “The Big Puma” and he would like to be a baseball coach for the University of Texas at Austin when he retires from MLB. He and his wife Cara now lives in Houston with their four daughters.
