Jacob Edward "Jake" Peavy was born on May 31, 1981 in Mobile, Alabama, USA. While attending St. Paul's Episcopal School, Peavy was selected by the San Diego Padres  as the 472nd pick of the 1999 Major League Baseball Draft. He played for the franchise from 2002 through 2009. In 2005, the Padres signed him to four-year, $14.5 million deal. In December 2007, he was again signed by the Padres to a four-year, $52 million contract extension with a club option of $22 million in 2013. It was considered the largest contract in the history of San Diego Padres.

In July 2009, Peavy was sent to the Chicago White Sox in exchange for Adam Russell, Clayton Richard, Dexter Carter and Aaron Poreda. In 2012, Peavy signed him to a two-year, $29 million extension contract. However, in 2013, he was traded to the Boston Red Sox.

Peavy was just 19 years old when he married his current wife, Katie Alford. They have three children named Jacob Edward, Judson Lee, and Wyatt.
