Felix Hernandez was born on April 8, 1986 in Valencia, Venezuela. At such a very young age, he has attracted the attention of many scouts because of her overpowering ability to throw 90 mph. As soon as he turned 16, he was signed by the Mariners in accordance to the rules of Major League Baseball (MLB).

Right after his graduation from high school, he had his first professional contract when he was signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Mariners in July 2002. For signing the deal, he received a staggering $710,000. Hernandez claimed that the Mariners was not the highest bidder during that time, but he chose to be with the team over Houston Astros, Atlanta Braves and New York Yankees.

He debuted into the Minor League in 2005 and a year later, he started playing for the Major League Baseball. In January 2009, he agreed to a one-year $3.8 million worth of contract with the Mariners. When the season ended, he only came second to Zack Greinke for the AL Cy Young Award.
