The twentieth century has left us with numerous automobile treasures that would have a very high monetary and sentimental value today, especially if their owners were popular icons. It is one thing to have a classic car, well maintained and remodelled, and another to have an old car in bad condition that looks like it belongs in a junkyard. In Hollywood, there are many celebrities who prefer to drive modest cars, although their critics would call them cheap. But let's be honest, a Hollywood star can have anything that they want, so keeping a low profile is not a bad idea, especially if you want to have a private life away from the cameras of the paparazzi.
When we think about the lifestyles of the rich and famous, we often imagine that they live surrounded by luxuries, excess, trips, mansions, the best clothes, and, of course, fast cars. After all, a car is one of the most coveted adult toys. But despite their immense fortunes, some celebrities have chosen to drive rather modest vehicles. Some claim that they have a special bond with their car's youthfulness, while others claim that their ecological awareness forces them to choose a hybrid or fuel-efficient vehicle over a fast-paced race car that uses huge amounts of gasoline.
15 Daniel Radcliffe, Fiat Punto
His first car was a modest 1998 Fiat Punto. You would think that after earning millions in the Harry Potter saga, Daniel Radcliffe would buy a luxury convertible like a Lamborghini or a Ferrari, but surprisingly, he bought a modest Fiat Punto for "just" $18,000. The reason being that Daniel is very environmentally conscious, so he preferred a small car over a sports vehicle that consumes large amounts of fuel and pollutes too much. Bearing in mind that the most powerful engine that comes with the car is a 1.8-liter diesel engine and a 1.9-liter gasoline engine, both with no more than 178 horsepower, it is clear that it is not an Aston Martin. Fundamentally for his involvement in the magician's saga, Daniel Radcliffe has raised a fortune worth of $25 million. Not bad, uh?
14 Jennifer Lawrence, Volkswagen EOS
Hollywood's favorite girl has made more than $50 million in just a few years of career, but this Oscar winner chose to buy a slightly more modest and durable car. With so many films and so much media attention, Jennifer Lawrence's net worth has grown over the years. Instead of celebrating her success by spending on high-powered exotic cars, she wanted to acquire a Volkswagen EOS. For $35,000, Lawrence enjoys a 2.0 turbo-charged engine with 200 horsepower. I'm sure she could buy a car that costs ten times as much, with triple the power, but she probably won't mind, or she doesn't have time to care. After all, being nominated for four Oscar awards is a time-consuming job and keep in mind she’s only 27.
13 Justin Timberlake, Volkswagen Jetta
Justin Timberlake receives millions of dollars in royalties alone each year from his hit songs and, although he has a great collection of cars, he feels comfortable driving his Jetta every day. With an annual income believed to amount to tens of millions, Timberlake could be driving around Porsches, Ferraris, or Lamborghinis. However, this fourth-generation Volkswagen Jetta is his favorite. While it costs only $16,000 and is extremely practical, it's not something you would really expect Timberlake to drive. Perhaps that's the reason why he does it. It's much easier for him to move around without attracting attention and he can go unnoticed by crowds of uncontrollable fans. Timberlake likes to support various charitable organizations, mainly to help children who are victims of child abuse, as well as victims of gender-based violence and domestic violence.
12 Mark Zuckerberg, Acura TSX
The Acura is the cheapest car that you can buy and still have it be considered a "luxury" car. With a price of $30,000, it is even cheaper than most affordable SUVs. Since 2010, Time magazine has named Mark Zuckerberg among the 100 richest and most influential people in the world as part of its "Person of the Year" publication. In December 2016, Zuckerberg ranked 10th on the Forbes list of the world's most powerful people and is now considered the fifth richest person in the world. Mark has considered donating 99% of his shares on Facebook to the Chan Zuckerberg initiative, which he has founded with his wife. His net worth is estimated to be $72.4 billion, as he currently operates as Facebook’s chairman and chief executive officer.
11 Mel Gibson, Toyota Cressida
One of Hollywood's richest and most important men drives a 35-year-old car, so you can stop feeling bad if you drive a car older than you are. When numerous paparazzi photographs appeared with Mel Gibson driving a sixth-generation Toyota Cressida, people began to wonder what was going on with him. Depending on the condition, a 1988-1992 Cressida can cost a few hundred dollars but no more than $8,000. It comes with a 190 horsepower 3.0L V6 engine, which is quite powerful. However, for a celebrity who tries to avoid scandal and publicity, what better car to transport yourself than an overly ordinary one? A banner of the best generation of Australian cinema and having achieved fame in Hollywood with the Mad Max and Lethal Weapon series, Gibson embarked on directing and acting in the film, Braveheart, which won awards for best film and best direction.
10 Colin Farrell, Ford Bronco
I don't want to accuse the actor of being stingy, but he's still driving the car he was given as a graduation present, and he has said that he wouldn't trade it for anything else. This is the classic case where the sentimental value of a car is worth far more than its economic value. His Ford Bronco was produced between 1966 and 1996.
In 2008, Mr. Colin Farrell won the Golden Globe for his characterization of the killer called Ray, in the black humor film, In Bruges. He has participated in major productions such as Alexander, Miami Vice, and Total Recall. The Irish actor has two children; one with the model, Kim Bordenave, named James Padraig, who has a genetic disease called Angelman Syndrome, and another with Polish actress, Alicja Bachleda-Curus, named Henry Tadeusz.
9 Leonardo DiCaprio, Toyota Prius
The great Leo DiCaprio, in addition to being a great actor and multiple Oscar nominee, winning for his role in The Revenant, is also an environmentalist. This is why he has decided to drive a Toyota Prius hybrid car in order to reduce fuel consumption and, therefore, the carbon footprint. The peculiar thing is that he also chose one of the cheapest cars of the company. With all the success and money he has made over the years, you could expect him to drive an assortment of exotic high-end cars. However, he prefers to drive a reasonably-priced and environmentally-friendly car. Leonardo DiCaprio, the land defender, has been a faithful owner of the Prius since its inception, and there are quite a few photos of him going out in it.
8 Pope Francis, Renault 4
The Supreme Pontiff has been characterized as one of the most humble popes. At the beginning of his mandate, he used to move in a Renault 4 inside the Vatican and Rome. Recently, the old car was replaced by an equally modest Ford Focus. Known for his humility and informal behavior, it should come as no surprise that the Pope travels in this car from the eighties. He is currently the 266th Pope, following Benedict XVI's resignation from the pontificate. Francis was elected in March of 2013 in the fifth round of voting on the second day of the conclave. Shortly after his election, Time magazine ranked him one of the 100 most influential people in 2013, and months later named him "Person of the Year."
7 Sean Penn, Nissan Titan
Why did the actor choose this modest model over other amazing, more luxurious pickups? Sean Penn appreciates the robust and durable design of this Japanese car manufactured in the United States and aimed at the North American market, which includes Canada and Mexico. In addition to his work in filmmaking, Sean Penn is known for his political and social activism, especially his criticism of the Bush Administration and his rapprochement with former presidents of Venezuela and Cuba, as well as for his humanitarian work in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the Haiti earthquake of 2010. He has been awarded two Oscars for his performance in the films Mystic River (2003) and Milk (2008). He began his acting career with a brief appearance in an episode directed by his father, Leo Penn, in the television series, Little House, on the Prairie in 1974.
6 Ron Artest, Hyundai Genesis
This vehicle was given to the basketball player, Ron Artest, better known as Metta World Peace, by the comedian, George Lopez. Even if it seems ridiculous, that's actually his new name. Born Ronald William Artest, Jr. in the Queens neighborhood of New York City, he is the eldest of three siblings and began practicing basketball at St. Mary's University.
Unfortunately, this Hyundai Genesis underwent some unpleasant modifications, with a custom color ranging from purple to yellow, purple tires and upholstered in the same color seats (probably, instead of increasing the price of the vehicle, it decreased it). All this is due to the sportsman's appreciation for the Los Angeles Lakers basket team, with whom he played between 2009 and 2013 and then between 2015 and 2016, in what became his last season as a professional.
5 Steve Ballmer, Ford Fusion
His fortune is estimated at $20 billion, so he could buy the world's most expensive cars without any problems, but Steve Ballmer enjoys driving a Ford Fusion. The price of this particular model, even with all luxury attachments, does not exceed $35,000. Ballmer is an entrepreneur and the former CEO of Microsoft, a company he joined in 1981 and retired from in 2014. In July of 2014, Steve Ballmer acquired a $2 billion NBA franchise— the Los Angeles Clippers. The purchase of such team occurred after its former owner, Donald Sterling, was forced to sell it because he was captured in video footage making racist statements. The NBA forced him to sell, and Sterling was reluctant to do so, but after a long trial, the court ruled against Sterling and forced him to sell the Clippers.
4 Conan O’Brien, Ford Taurus
Many people are familiar with the career of this animator, who is one of the biggest talk show stars, with his program Conan being one of the most-watched on American television. But what we also know about Conan O'Brien is his inability to separate from his 1992 Ford Taurus SHO. Although at the time this car was a vehicle with a powerful 220-horsepower machine and its price hovered around $24,000, today you can get it for just a couple of thousand dollars. Conan O’Brien is mainly recognized for hosting Late Night with Conan O' Brien on NBC. At that time, he replaced Jay Leno as host of The Tonight Show (the most watched late-night show in the United States), but he got fired. He currently hosts the late show Conan, broadcast by TBS.
3 Clint Eastwood, GMC Typhoon
We all know that Clint Eastwood is a big fan of cars, and you'd think his favorite would be a Gran Torino. He has European and American sports cars, but one of the movie legend's favorites is a GMC Typhoon SUV, which was customized with a 4.3-liter turbocharged V6 turbo engine that produces 280 horsepower, which means it can go from 0 to 60mph in just 5.3 seconds. Despite the box-office success he's achieved over the course of his extensive career, Eastwood's choice of cars does not seem to be too relevant.
Since 1967, Clint Eastwood has owned his own film production company, Malpaso Productions, which has produced most of its films. He was also mayor of the Californian town, Carmel-by-the-Sea, from 1986 to 1988. Eastwood has eight children from six different women, although he has only been married twice.
2 Dave Grohl, Ford Falcon
The singer and musician of the rock-band, The Foo Fighters, has had this Ford Falcon for years and has conditioned it to take it on tours throughout the United States. The great Dave Grohl is a multi-instrumentalist musician who jumped to fame in the early '90s as a drummer for the iconic grunge band, Nirvana, along with Krist Novoselic and its leader and composer, Kurt Cobain. In 1994, after Cobain's death and the end of Nirvana, Grohl formed what his current group, Foo Fighters. Grohl has publicly acknowledged that his favorite band is Led Zeppelin. He even came to offer himself as a substitute for John Bonham when they played at London's O2 Arena in 2007. Finally, the chosen one was the son of the late drummer, John Bonham, and not Dave.
1 John Goodman, Ford F-150
Known to many, John Goodman is a movie legend, as well as on the small screen. And yes, he prefers to drive one of the most popular and recognized pickup trucks in the United States— a 1997 Ford F-150 model. Goodman is, along with John Turturro and Steve Buscemi, one the directors, Joel and Ethan Coen's, favorite actors and counted on him for many of their films such as Raising Arizona, Barton Fink, The Big Lebowski, Oh Brother Where Art Thou?, and Inside Llewyn Davis. Goodman was awarded the Golden Globe for his role in the series Roseanne (1988-1997), and his roles in films such as The Flintstones, Trumbo, Kong: Skull Island, Monsters, Inc., Argo, 10 Cloverfield Lane, and The Artist are quite popular. His graceful face and particular size have made him one of the most recognizable faces in the industry.
