Why Your SNES Classic Pre-Order Was Cancelled

Since NES Classic sold out instantly, Nintendo fans eager to get their hands on the SNES Classic are hitting the refresh button on their keyboards daily waiting for the presale to start. Over the weekend, retail giant Wal-Mart seems to have finally made the hotly anticipated mini-console available for pre-order, selling out in merely 40 minutes.

Now on Monday, July 24, 2017, those lucky souls able to secure their pre-order may have their coveted consoles taken away from them.

Various reports on social media state that Wal-Mart is contacting customers to say their SNES Classic pre-orders are being canceled. One exchange with Wal-Mart customer service says that the pre-order went live due to a “website error” and that the "manufacturer doesn't have the preorder yet." SNES Classics already purchased are having their pre-orders canceled and their credit cards refunded the $80 price tag.

However, the reports aren’t all unanimous. Some are saying that only those customers that didn’t have enough money on their credit cards are having their pre-orders canceled. Others are saying canceled orders are all from new, unverified Wal-Mart accounts, and that Wal-Mart is attempting to use the mess as a way of weeding out scalpers.

The good news is that not all pre-orders are being canceled, and Wal-Mart hasn’t said anything officially about what’s going on. There’s still some hope that your pre-order will stay and that you won’t have to go back to hammering the F5 key on your keyboard day in, day out.

If there’s one thing this whole fiasco proves, it’s that the SNES Classic is quite likely to run into the same problems as the NES Classic last winter. The demand for the NES Classic was so high that stores couldn’t keep the console stocked, and scalpers were re-selling the device for as much as five times the price on eBay. Then Nintendo decided to discontinue the product despite millions of fans still clamoring for a taste of gaming history.

We can only hope that things won’t be quite as bad this time, but if history is anything to judge, don't hold your breath. The SNES Classic officially launches on Sept. 29, 2017.
