Oh the 90s, what a decade! Beepers were the cool way to keep in touch with your friends, TGIF Friday and Must See Thursdays were the best nights on television, and you would sit through all those commercials just so you wouldn’t miss a minute of your favorite shows. The world was introduced to a teenage Britney Spears and you were either a *NSYNC or Backstreet Boys fan but never both. Finally, going to Blockbuster to rent videos were considered a great way to spend a Saturday night.
It seems like only yesterday day that we were living in the simpler days of the 1990’s. However, that is not the case at all. Here are five things that will make any 90’s kid feel really old.
5. Titanic Turns Is 20 Years Old
The forbidden love story of Jack and Rose on the big screen was all the rage in the 90s and this year, the film Titanic is 20-years old. At the time 22-year old Leonardo DiCaprio played Jack and 21-year old Kate Winslet played Rose, roles that launched both of to Hollywood A-list status. People everywhere flocked to see the 3-hour-and-15-minute James Cameron movie—which at the time was considered the most expensive movie ever made. 4. Kids Born In 2000 Are About To Graduate High School
Oh yes, that is correct, kids born in 2000 have either graduated high-school or will graduate at the end of the current school year. That means that after this year, any kid in high school will have been born in the 21st century. Ponder that for a moment. 90’s kids are now officially born in a different century that the youth of today. Just to add a little salt to that injury, on the list of kids now in high school is the adorable daughter of Ross and Rachel on Friends. Baby Emma is now 15-years old and in high school.
3. Saved By The Bell Ended Over Two Decades Ago
The hit NBC Saturday morning must-see show Saved By The Bell ended over two decades ago and not just the original but the disastrous spin-off The College Years too. It was the show that introduced fans to Zack, Kelly, Screech, Slater, Jessie, and Lisa, as well as made every teenager wish they attended Bayside High. Even though the show was chalk full of cheesy one-liners and attempted to deal with relevant teenage issues in a clean cut manner, Saved By The Bell was one of the best teenage shows on television in the 90s. These days those the kids of Bayside are now grown adults with their own kids, sigh.
2. The year 2037 Is As Far Away As 1997
When one thinks about the year 2037, it seems really far away right? Well, as it turns out the year 1997 is just as far away as 2037. As much as any 90s kid would like to think of the beloved decade as yesterday, it just isn’t so. Especially when you count those years forward, as opposed to backward. What makes that even worse is if the years between now and 2037 go as fast as they did between 1997 and now, the future will be here before we all know it.
1. The Future In Back To The Future II Is Now The Past
Remember when Marty McFly and Doc Brown went into the future? Well, that future is now officially the past. In Back To The Future II, Marty and his friend used the DeLorean time machine to visit the future. October 21, 2015, was the exact date and the men encountered things like flying cars and hoverboards. Who could have ever imagined when watching the hit film that the future date would now be considered the past. If that isn’t enough to make any 90s kid feel old, then literally nothing will.
