Oprah Winfrey Takes Shots At Predators In Hollywood

Oprah Winfrey took a shot at all the sexual predators in Hollywood last night during her Golden Globe award acceptance speech.

Oprah is no stranger to award ceremonies. The actor, media mogul, and feminine icon already has 18 Daytime Emmy Awards, 12 NAACP awards, and an Academy Award, but now she’s finally able to add a Golden Globe to her trophy case.

The 63-year-old took home the 2018 Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award, an award given by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment. During her acceptance speech, Oprah took the opportunity to harken back to black pioneers who came before her.

“It is not lost on me that, at this moment, there is some little girl watching as I become the first Black woman to be given the same award,” Oprah said, referring to Sidney Poitier, the first African American to win not only the DeMille Award but also an Academy Award. “It is an honor and it is a privilege to share the evening with all of them.”

Her acceptance speech also made reference to Recy Taylor, a woman who was abducted and gang-raped by six white Alabama men. Even though one of them confessed, none of those men stood trial for their crimes. Taylor died on December 29th.

”She lived as we all have lived, too many years in a culture broken by brutally powerful men. For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dare speak the truth to the power of those men. But their time is up. Their time is up.”

Oprah received several standing ovations as she continued to call out sexual predators in Hollywood and beyond. “This year, we became the story. But it’s not just a story affecting the entertainment industry, it’s one that transcends any culture, or workplace,” she said.

“I want all the girls watching to know a new day is on the horizon,” she continued. “And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure they are the leaders to take us to the time where nobody has to say ‘me too’ again.”
