The former house of famed American actress Natalie Wood is on the market for the first time in over 40 years.
The late Natalie Wood owned the house with husband, actor Robert Wagner, until her death in 1981. Her death made national headlines for occurring under mysterious circumstances, her body being found the following day after a sailing trip near Catalina Island.
On November 28th, 1981, Wagner, Wood, and friend Christopher Walken were all on a sailing trip off the coast of Los Angeles. At some point, that night Wood was said to have fallen into the water, where she drowned. Her body was found the next day and examined by the LA coroner where she was found to have had a blood alcohol level of 0.14, as well as the remnants of pain and anti-nausea medications.
Rumors swirled that either Wagner had pushed her into the water or Wood had seen Walken and Wagner in bed together, causing her to throw herself overboard in anguish. The LA coroner’s office ruled her death an accident.
Later the estate was bought by Pulitzer-winning author Herman Wouk, who purchased the compound for just under $1 million. He lived there until finishing his last book, Sailor and Fiddler: Reflections of a 100-Year-Old Author.
Located in Palm Springs, California, the Mediterranean-style home is nestled into a "gently rolling knoll,” according to the listing. The main house is just over 5000 square feet, has 6 bedrooms, 6.5 baths, a pool, and a tennis court. A rustic stone exterior gives way to an equally quaint interior filled with carved swinging doors, exposed beams, iron accents, and multiple fireplaces to deal with the chilly California weather.
Along with the main house is a guest house with its own private entrance and parking for 3-4 cars. That house is a more modest 3 bedroom, 3.5 baths, and a little under 2000 feet, for a total combined square footage of 6943 on 1.6 acres.
It’s currently listed at $2.495 million, but some significant updates are needed unless you want to live in a house that virtually screams 70’s California chic.
