Kim and Kanye have announced their new baby’s name: Chicago West.
Kim Kardashian West revealed their baby’s name on her personal website earlier today, ending days of rampant speculation on social media. Underneath the title she simply reiterated Chicago’s birth stats, “January 15, 2018, 12:47 am, 7lbs 6oz.”
Chicago was born via surrogate as Kim suffered from numerous complications during her earlier pregnancies with Saint and North. One condition, placenta accreta, is potentially life-threatening as it causes the walls of the placenta to grow into the uterus, making childbirth incredibly risky for the mother. Kim’s doctors advised her against bear the child herself, so Chicago was given to a surrogate to bring to term.
A three syllable name is a bit of a mouthful, so Kim clarified that Chicago’s name would pretty much be commonly shortened to just “Chi”.

The pronunciation of which was immediately clarified again by many of Kim’s Twitter followers.
Chicago West might be the Blackest thing Kanye has done in about 5 years or so.— Jasmyn Lawson (@JasmynBeKnowing) January 19, 2018
🗣And they will call her Chi PRONOUNCED (SHY) and not (CHAI) FYI!
And further confirmed by sister Khloe, who gave her seal of approval on the choice of name.
I LOOOOOOOOOOVE her name 😍😍😍😍 hey Chi (shy) https://t.co/Ikd0ay3DsO— Khloé (@khloekardashian) January 19, 2018
She wasn’t the only one. Many loyal Kardashian followers expressed their support for the unconventional name. Unsurprisingly, the most vocal supporters were those who already represented Chicago either in real life or on TV.
Others were less supportive, seeing it as yet another insane name bestowed by out of touch media aristocrats.

Hilariously, Rob Kardashian very nearly spilled the beans before Kim could make her announcement. On Wednesday, Rob tweeted two bear emojis on his Twitter account, causing many to speculate that the baby would be named “Teddy” or “Bear” West.

Turns out it was actually a reference to the Chicago Cubs.
As PopSugar points out, the name should really come as no surprise to anyone. Kanye West’s hometown is Chicago, and he never ends a concert without giving a shout out to the city that raised him. Kanye’s lyrics are likewise littered with Chicago references, and his song “Hometown” is essentially a tribute to the Windy City.
