Jessica Simpson is being sued for posting paparazzi photos of herself on Instagram. That is right, even celebrities need permission to post certain pictures of themselves on social media.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Splash News gave exclusive rights to the Daily Mail website to publish paparazzi photos of Simpson leaving New York’s Bowery Hotel. The singer then shared those pictures on her Twitter and Instagram accounts and the agency wants her to pay.
The lawsuit states that Splash News never gave Simpson permission to publish the photos online. Therefore, she is in violation of their copyright policy because she used them without the agency giving her the OK to do so.
Jessica Simpson is being sued for posting a paparazzi pic on her IG bc she didn't have permission to post it. Excuse me. Did that photographer have her permission to take her photo? Doubt it. 🙄😡— NickNemiDemi ❤️RTF ❤️ (@NickNemiDemi) January 25, 2018
“Simpson or someone acting on her behalf copied the Photograph and distributed it on Instagram within hours of its original publication on August 9, 2017. The copy of the Photograph that Simpson distributed on Instagram had been altered, without authorization or approval, to remove the CMI showing plaintiff as the copyright owner of the image,” claimed attorney Peter Perkowski, who is representing Splash News.
Court documents also state that the agency believes that by sharing the photos on her social media account, the former Newlyweds star cost them serious revenue. Because of the statue of Simpson’s fame, the agency could have licensed the photos to more outlets. The agency is seeking anywhere from $2,500 to $25,000 in damages from Simpson due to lost revenue.
“Simpson's Instagram post and Twitter tweet made the Photograph immediately available to her nearly 11.5 million followers and others, consumers of entertainment news, and especially news and images of Simpson herself, as evidenced by their status as followers of her, who would otherwise be interested in viewing licensed versions of the Photograph in the magazines and newspapers that are plaintiff's customers,” claimed Perkowski.
Jessica Simpson finds herself in the middle of a lawsuit over pictures of her. They aren’t racy, they aren’t nude, they are just photos but she is not the one suing, she is being sued. Splash News filed the lawsuit on Tuesday. There has been no comment from Simpson or her camp regarding the lawsuit. Perhaps she will settle and make it all go away without ever having to talk about it.
