Comedian and TV show host Steve Harvey has once again landed himself in some pretty hot water over his recent comments about Asian men.
Harvey was going over titles of self-help books when he landed on the 2002 title, How to Date a White Woman, A Guide for Asian Men. Harvey then went onto say "Do you like Asian men? I don't even like Chinese food."
The statement has been lauded as racist, and has prompted a massive backlash against the comedian. However, this is not the first time Harvey has said something controversial. Over the years, he's built up a repertoire of unreasonable, idiotic statements such as:
"Does he have a relationship with God? You sittin' up here talking to a dude and he tells you he's an atheist, you need to pack it up and go home. You're talking to a person who don't believe in God. You fe- What's his moral barometer? Where is it at? It's no where."
Harvey said this statement regarding atheists while in an interview with Tyra Banks. He was later confronted about this statement on Larry King Live and added to it saying that he didn't understand where atheists get their morals if they don't believe in God. He also added that he walks away from people who say they are atheist because he doesn't "understand" them.
"Wow, her husband nags. That’s new. Maybe you should check your husband’s man card. Maybe he’s not the rough-and-tumble guy you thought you married. What’s he nagging for? Because men aren’t supposed to nag, is what I’m nagging."
Harvey is known for truly believing that women are "wired differently" than men, and thus if a man does anything he considers to be feminine, he's gotta check his man card. Once again, Joy Behar attempted to call Harvey out on the inherently sexist nature of the first statement, and he doubled down on it second with the above.
"This thing that y’all sitting on, this thing that every man got to have—your body, that precious jewel that’s in the most hidden place on your body. Think about that. God is smart, that’s why he put it where he put it because it’s hard to get to. We can’t get to it unless you show it to us or you give it to us. Think about that for a minute. Don’t pass it around like it ain’t nothing to it, because you’re actually sitting on a gold mine. Please act like it young ladies. Act like you’re sitting on a gold mine because it is what every man is after and we will pay dearly for it."
Hoo boy. Wow. There's about a million things wrong with the quote above, from encouraging to use sex as manipulation to objectifying the vagina (which is a work Harvey can't bring himself to say by the way).
[A man] is weak in some areas, and so he goes outside his relationship. But there are some things women do to contribute to this. I have a chapter in the book talking about what a man has to have: support, loyalty, and "the cookie" [sex]. If any of those things are missing, he's going somewhere to get it, because he has to have it.
According to Harvey, men are not responsible if they cheat. It's on the woman in the relationship to ensure her significant other doesn't stray, and the way she has to do it is outlined above.
"Well, I mean, you know if a guy is out for one thing, it’s best to go for shallow, unintelligent women. You don’t want to break this news to really bright women. 'Hey, I just want to do something to you this evening'...You want to find somebody shallow, really simple unintelligent, that you can run this by and they’ll sit there and go, 'Wow, that sounds great.'"
If you're a guy and you want to have sex, then you're probably going to go for a shallow, unintelligent woman. Oh and you're probably not going to have a relationship with her because men don't upgrade "sex girls," which speaking of...
"Get it through your head, you are the Friday girl. That is just for sex. That's what you are. He's not going to graduate you to his wife. We don't upgrade sex girls, we don't do that. We don't do that."
And did we mention that he also believes women should withhold sex for a period of 90 days? As if having sex on the first or third date will dramatically change the flow of a relationship.
When asked about how to turn down a suitor: "You cannot stop a guy. Once a guy is interested in you, we lock in. We don’t care what you do."
Harvey's statement has given the impression that he is compliant with rape culture, particularly the line of thought that men are unable to help themselves when around a woman they find attractive.
Steve Harvey has said a number of incredibly crass and inappropriate things. If you don't believe he said the above, this compilation might serve to change your mind:
It's great that he's given an audience of millions.
