A chef in England is under fire for allegedly “spiking” a vegan’s meal with meat.
After preparing a special vegan menu for group reservation, Laura Goodman, co-owner of the Carlini Italian restaurant, became incensed after one of the guests ordered a Margherita pizza - which includes cheese - off the regular menu.
She then went on Facebook and posted how she had “spiked” the vegan’s meal.
"Pious, judgmental vegan (who I spent all day cooking for) has gone to bed, still believing she's a vegan," Goodman wrote on her Facebook. When someone asked to clarify what she'd done, she responded with, "Spiked a vegan a few hours ago."
The post immediately went viral and resulted in an enormous public backlash against Goodman, who has since resigned as chef at both restaurants she co-owned.
A Carlini spokesperson released a prepared statement regarding Goodman’s resignation: “Laura Goodman has today tendered her resignation from Carlini and the board of directors are currently considering their options. Whilst this process is being completed, Laura will not be working at either of the restaurants, which will re-open later this week. As part of a pre-planned recruitment drive, Carlini is also recruiting for an additional head chef to work across both its restaurants in Shropshire.”
Last week the 47-year-old chef received a reservation order for a group of vegans. The restaurant’s normal menu only included a few vegetarian options and no vegan ones, so she agreed to prepare a special menu for the group.
The group was apparently fairly demanding on Goodman, and when one guest ordered a pizza with cheese on it, she took note.
Goodman says that she never actually spiked the vegan’s mean, and was merely commenting on how cheese is not actually vegan as it contains dairy. However, her explanation has fallen on deaf ears. Facebook vegan groups immediately began organizing protests and have flooded her restaurant reviews on Google and TripAdvisor with negative ratings, dragging it from 5-stars all the way to 1.
“Lisa is in a bad way. She is too scared to leave the house. The police are taking the threats against her very seriously,” said a close friend to Daily Mail. “She can't believe how she has found herself in this position. She actually made a flippant remark which wasn't even true. She didn't actually 'spike' anyone's food. It's been a nightmare for her.”
