If there’s any home that just screams wealth and class, it’s the penthouse. Think about it - the penthouse is literally on top of everyone else’s dwelling. It’s the very definition of high society, both in terms of price and in terms of altitude. Sure, you can have a fancy mansion or villa for the same price, but nothing beats a penthouse apartment for being above it all and yet still staying in the heart of the city.
It’s no wonder that celebrities are particularly partial to penthouses. Mostly because they’re the few types of people that can afford it, but also because their location makes it difficult for the paparazzi to spy on them. Anyone can hide outside a gate, but it’s a lot more difficult to get access to a condominium.
For that reason alone, celebrities are willing to shell out big bucks for a penthouse apartment, and once they move in the place will inevitably take on that particular celeb’s personality. Let’s take a look at some of the craziest penthouses that famous people have dropped big bucks to own.

Johnny Depp actually had several penthouses in the Eastern Columbia Building in downtown Los Angeles, but following his split with Amber Heard he’s decided to sell them off and move on. Two of them have already sold for $4.2 million and $3 million, but Penthouse two is still up for sale for around $2.5 million.
Penthouse two is a multi-floor apartment with two bedrooms, two baths, a studio living room and kitchen, huge windows, a palatial master bathroom, and access to the building’s enormous saltwater pool and spa.

Just recently put on the market is Jennifer Lopez’s sprawling penthouse at The Whitman condominium building. What it lacks in overall height it makes up for in a truly cavernous space that seems to defy all conventions for downtown New York living.
The 6,540-square-foot duplex has four bedrooms, six full bathrooms, two half baths, a living room large enough to play football in, and a magical outdoor terrace that overlooks Madison Square Park. Don’t expect this one to come cheap: it’s listed at $27 million.
One look at Tommy Hilfiger’s penthouse at Central Park 1 in downtown New York will leave you thinking you’ve stepped through the looking glass. The 5,600-square-foot has a mostly Victorian feel with its checkered floors and wood-paneled everything, and each of its four bedrooms has its own specific theme: one nautical, one lavender fields, one rock & roll, and the master bedroom which follows the rest of the house but is simply black and white.
Hilfiger originally listed the place at $80 million but has since dropped it to a far more reasonable $50 million.
If you’re after something a little less gauche you can try Rosie O'Donnell's Midtown East triplex penthouse. This modern-style condo opens up to a massive combined living and dining room, floor to wall ceilings and a phenomenal view of New York. Wood-burning fireplace, bar, and 70-bottle wine refrigerator are more than enough to satisfy anyone's luxury needs.
Best of all, the 3,600 square-foot penthouse comes with a 1600 square-foot rooftop terrace, complete with outdoor kitchen, lounge, and integrated sound system. And it can all be yours for the low price of $8 million.
If you’re into white and shag carpets then Gwyneth Paltrow’s Tribeca penthouse might be your dream home. The whole condo is lit by crystal chandeliers, there's a hanging sofa in the living room, and the dining room has been done in a Japanese style with guests sitting on cushions on the floor rather than chairs. There's also a record player and a fireplace to give the rather sterile environment some warmth.
The place sold for $10.7 million last June, and it seems likely it has gone through a bit of a facelift since the new owners took possession.
Kim Kardashian West
Not every penthouse needs to be bought and purchased for a celeb to enjoy it. Kim Kardashian actually stayed in this $30 million Downtown Manhattan penthouse for free courtesy of Airbnb, but us regular folks can experience what it’s like to live like a queen for a paltry $10,000 a night. Who says that luxury couldn’t be had on the cheap?
The rooftop terrace features a 360-degree view of Manhattan and also has outdoor dining and kitchen for those awesome summer days. The 7,200 square foot apartment also comes with a home sauna, gym, private pool, six bathrooms, and five bedrooms. And of course, all the appliances are as ultra-modern as can be.
