CBS has fired Charlie Rose after multiple allegations of sexual harassment have come out against the legendary journalist.
“A short time ago we terminated Charlie Rose’s employment with CBS News, effective immediately. This followed the revelation yesterday of extremely disturbing and intolerable behavior said to have revolved around his PBS program. Despite Charlie’s important journalistic contribution to our news division, there is absolutely nothing more important, in this or any organization, than ensuring a safe, professional workplace — a supportive environment where people feel they can do their best work. We need to be such a place.” CBS News President David Rhodes revealed in a memo to staff.
The news of Rose’s firing comes one day after the network suspended him from all his duties, once a The Washington Post story broke claiming eight women were accusing him of sexual misconduct. Allegations against the news icon included, him appearing in the nude to several women, as well as unwanted sexual advances and groping.
The CBS Morning News anchor issued a statement via Twitter on Monday. Although he did acknowledge that he was embarrassed by the accusations, he didn’t really apologize for them. Rose even shared that he did not believe all of the allegations against him were true. In a very roundabout way, he admitted some wrongdoing, but mostly claimed he thought he was pursuing “shared feelings.”
Along with being fired from CBS for harassment allegations, his PBS show Charlie Rose The Week has officially been dropped. On Monday, the network immediately halted production on the talk show while it launched a full investigation into the allegations. Shortly after CBS released its statement today, PBS shared that the show was being pulled permanently.
“In light of yesterday’s revelations, PBS has terminated its relationship with Charlie Rose and canceled distribution of his programs. PBS expects all the producers we work with to provide a workplace where people feel safe and are treated with dignity and respect.” A spokesperson for the network shared in an official statement to the press.
Charlie Rose is the latest in a long list of high profile men that have been exposed for sexual harassment and misconduct. He can also be added to the growing list of men who have tanked their careers because of such horrible behavior.
