It looks like Ariel Winter may have finally had enough of the media spotlight.
The 19-year-old Modern Family star took to Instagram Monday to rail against the media’s constant coverage of her every move, as well as criticism of her fashion choices.
“I am literally just LIVING and unfortunately, I can’t do that without paparazzi following me around every day,” the young actress wrote, clearly having had enough attention paid to the details of her attire.
Winter is well known for having an “everyday” wardrobe that includes super-high miniskirts, platform strappy heels, and plunging necklines (or sometimes barely any top at all). She defended her fashion choices in her post, writing, “I’m not a stylist! I don’t know what to wear every day so I look ‘appropriate’ or ‘fashionable’.”
She then attacks the very notion of what is acceptable in modern society and fashion. “Also, screw having to always look appropriate or fashionable. For what? Society? Who gets to decide what is appropriate or fashionable?”
She certainly has a point, but we’d argue that her celebrity sets the trend for what is acceptable rather than what isn’t.
Winter also had words for all the haters on social media that criticize her for being a celebrity “sl*t”. “Just because I DECIDE to show my body occasionally doesn’t mean I’m unintelligent or that I’m talentless or that I have no self-respect. I have EXTREME respect for myself, I HAVE talent, and I AM intelligent.”
“We need to move on from this stigma that women who are comfortable with their bodies and their sexuality are just ‘dumb sl*ts’,” she wrote.
Winter then goes to respond to her feature article in The Hollywood Reporter which dealt with her troubled childhood. In the article, Winter reveals how she has dealt with depression since childhood, and how her mother would dress her in “the smallest miniskirts, sailor suits, low-cut things, the shortest dresses you’ve ever seen.”
“People thought I was 24 when I was 12. If there was going to be a nude scene when I was that age, my mother would have a thousand percent said yes,” Winter admits during the interview.
“I also just want to say how disappointed I am that out of everything in the THR article, THAT’S all anyone picked up. How disappointing,” said Winter of those who believe her fashion choices to have more to do with her upbringing than her own will.
Her millions of Instagram followers left words of encouragement and support following the rant, with one follower saying, “You don’t have to explain yourself to any of us. Do you! That’s it, if we are really your fans then we will follow you regardless of what you wear.”
