Although around for centuries, it wasn’t until the mid-70s when streaking became the thing to do. Streaking is done to achieve notoriety or fulfill a dare, often an alcohol induced bet. Streakers like crowds. Sports brings audiences and streakers together and many infamous streaks have occurred at popular sporting events.
Whatever their reasons, streakers are out to get attention; to bare all and bask in their thirty seconds of glory. Here are 15 of the most famous streaks.
15. Lady Godiva
She did it for her people. According to legend, Lady Godiva’s husband told her the only way he would not raise taxes for the citizens of Coventry was if she rode her horse naked through its streets. She did and he didn’t.
14. Students, University of Texas
In the spring of 1974, hundreds of spectators gathered on Speedway at the University of Texas, to watch an upcoming “streak-in.” Later the same evening, a streaker with a cowboy hat and boots ran on by. The fad had began.
13. Twickenham, 1974
Ian Bradshaw took this photo of streaker, Michael O'Brien at a rugby international game between England and France. It later became LIFE magazine’s “Picture of the Year” and also won a World Press Photo Award. People Magazine named it, “Picture of The Decade”.
12. England and Australia at Lord's Ashes Test
Another iconic picture. Michael Angelow sprints onto the pitch during the August, 1975 cricket match and hurdles the stumps. Moments after the leap, Angelow was arrested and charged £20—the same amount he won in the drunken bet that led to his streak.
11. The Finger Pointing Streak

10. Bater's Up (or Down)
It was batsman Greg Chappell who came out the hero by strategically positioning the bat in front of the unknown streaker during Australia vs. West Indies one-day international, in Melbourne, 1979.
9. The Multi-tasker
During a rugby match between the British and Irish Lions and Manawatu in, 2005, a streaker continued talking on his cell phone as police tackled him to the ground.
8. The Cardinals-Phillies Streak
It doesn’t happen often in baseball, which makes this streaker somewhat unique. On May 24, 2012 in Busch Stadium, St. Louis, MO, this guy made a dash for it, making the game experience just that little bit more exciting.
7. The Dive
During a rugby Challenge Cup semifinal between St. Helens and Huddersfield, this guy took a dive at The Halliwell Jones Stadium on April 25, 2004 in Warrington, England.
6. Twickenham, 1982
Back at Twickenham, the Union Jack is strategically positioned to cover up Erica Roe, who, during an international rugby game between England and Australia, removed only her bra, but it was enough to get her busted.
5. President's Cup
In October, 2013, 23-year-old Kimberly Webster draped a US flag behind her as she ran through the Muirfield Village country club in Dublin, Ohio during the President's Cup.
4. Nude Rugby Gets a Streaker
This actually happened. Blacks players try to catch the female streaker during their nude match against Romanian Vampires, on September 24, 2011, at Larnach castle in Dunedin.
3. Wimbledon, 1996
Melissa Johnson, a 23-year-old student, became Wimbledon’s first streaker in 1996 during the men's singles final between MaliVai Washington and Richard Krajicek.
2. Too Many to List
Roberts' streaking career began when he saw a female streaker run naked down a 1993 Rugby Sevens game in Hong Kong. After a bet in a bar, he went naked in front of the crowd himself the next day. According to the Guinness World Book of Records, to date, Mark Roberts has completed more than 300 streaks.
1. The Oscars Streaker
Niven did not miss a beat. He turned to the audience and quipped, "Well, ladies and gentlemen, that was almost bound to happen... But isn't it fascinating to think that probably the only laugh that man will ever get in his life is by stripping off and showing his shortcomings?"
