Eight hours can seem like an eternity when you’re working a job that you don’t like. When you’re bored at work, time doesn’t only stand still – sometimes it appears to go backward. Studies show that boredom and monotony can actually contribute to stress. In addition, being bored makes workers less likely to pay attention to what they’re doing, which can result in accidents and injuries.
On the other hand, when workers are stimulated and engaged, they’re enthusiastic about coming to work. Every day is a new adventure because they’re doing something that they love. And since they’re doing something that they love, they’re having fun, which leads them to perform at a high level of excellence.
Now, most adults never even think about pursuing a career that would be considered fun, but as children, nothing is off-limits as a career option. Kids are only limited by their imagination. If they can dream it, they think they can do it. But somewhere along the way, children don’t receive the emotional support or academic instruction required to pursue their dreams.
Instead, they’re strongly encouraged to pursue practical career options with steady paychecks. However, many practical jobs are tedious and mind-numbingly dull. And, ironically, many boring jobs don’t necessarily pay a salary that even counterbalances the boredom. So why not consider a career that’s fun and also pays a lucrative salary?
The jobs on this list are just a sample of the types of careers that allow people to pursue their interests, hobbies, and passions. For some, they also provide a glimpse into a growing world of creativity and technological advances that has plenty of room for the next innovator.
It’s been said that if you find a job you love, you’ll never work a day in your life. That may be an exaggeration. But you’ll certain have more fun at work.
5 Food Critic
Median Salary: $55,420
For people who love to eat, especially those who love to dine out and try new menu items, a career as a food critic is a dream job. Food critics order different dishes, and note the quality of the food and service. Sometimes they return to the same restaurant a second or third time to sample other menu items.
While their work used to be limited to sit down restaurants, it now includes street vendors and even farmer’s markets, according to MyFootpath.com. Now, you’ll need to bring more to the table than just a good appetite. Food critics also need good writing skills, since they write articles and columns for magazines, newspapers, and websites. Some food critics even star on TV shows, so they need good screen presence.
A specific degree is not required, but food critics need the type of writing skills gained by pursuing a bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, or communications.
4 Multimedia Artist Or Animator
Median Salary: $60,830
Multimedia artists and animators, which also would include graphic artists, 3D animators, illustrators, and digital artists, create the special effects and images seen in movies and video games, as well as on TV shows. Avatar, Wreck It Ralph, Toy Story, Shrek, and Madagascar are just some of the animated and 3D movies created by these artistic professionals.
They also create animated web sites, characters for Saturday morning cartoons, and electronic greeting cards, and they’re responsible for the computer-generated explosions, fires, lights, motion text, and other special effects that you see in various entertainment mediums.
The educational requirement for multimedia artists and animators is usually a bachelor’s degree in animation, computer graphics, fine arts, or a related field. However, some schools offer degrees in media and game design.
3 Robotics Engineer
Median Salary: $90,580
If you loved the Terminator and Transformer movie franchises, imagine spending your days designing, building, and operating robots. Robotics engineers created wall-climbing geckos that can also walk on ceilings, and snake robots that can maneuver in tight spaces and can be used to search for people in collapsed buildings.
Other robots defuse land mines, and explore shipwrecks at the bottom of the ocean’s floor. And Topio is a humanoid robot that plays against – and regularly beats – humans in ping pong.
Some colleges offer a bachelor’s degree in robotics engineering. Otherwise, the educational requirement is a bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical, manufacturing, industrial, or electronic engineering.
2 Ferrari Driving Instructor
Annual Salary: $120,000
If you’re willing to move to Austin, Texas or Mont Tremblant, Canada, you can work at one of the only two Ferrari driving schools in North America. It’s not a racing school – although the cars are driven on race tracks (in addition to public roads).
For $13,500 at the Austin location, or $10,700 in Quebec, students -- who may be Ferrari owners or just enthusiasts -- spend two days receiving individual instruction on how to correctly drive these cars. Instructors teach such topics as threshold braking, weight transfer, and how to manage acceleration. They also teach the best driving techniques in wet and dry environments. Most instructors are former race car drivers, but it wouldn’t hurt to apply for employment if you think you have the skills.
1 Professional Golfer
Median Annual Salary $59,000; Tiger Woods: $78 million
If you enjoy spending all day playing golf, why not get paid to do it? If you can play well enough to make the cut for the final 36 holes of a PGA golf tournament, you’re guaranteed to make at least $25,000 for your efforts, and winning a tournament pays an average of $1.5 million.
Professional golfers also receive compensation, also $25,000, for playing in corporate golfing events. Most professional golfers play in college and/or began their careers playing amateur golf. However, you’ll need patience and perseverance to succeed.
According to Lawrie Montague and David Milne of Pro Tour Golf College, it generally takes 7 to 10 years for a professional golfer to reach world-class status. But, the endorsements for professional golfers are staggering. For example, in 2013, less than $2 million of Tiger's $83.1 million salary was earned in tournament play.
