With NASA no longer sponsoring a space program, America’s battle for control of the galaxy is up for grabs between two of the world’s wealthiest billionaires: Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk. Currently, both men are battling for control over a former NASA launch pad at Kennedy Space Center.
Bezos is an Internet pioneer and founder of Amazon and Blue Origin with a net worth in excess of $27.2 billion. The opposition is Musk, the self-made billionaire and founder of Paypal, Tesla Motors and Space X who has a net worth estimated at $6.7 billion. Both men have gone to the streets of Washington to hire former Congressional leaders and lobbyists to promote their space program.
If selected to purchase the launch pad, both men are expected to sign lucrative contracts with the U.S. government to transport supplies and possibly manpower to the International Space Station. Additionally, Musk and Bezos are both soliciting invitations and payment to take private citizens into outer space. It remains to be seen whether multiple bids will be accepted for the platform so that many companies can have an opportunity to cash in on the lucrative space industry or whether it will be rewarded to Musk or Bezos.
