Pharmaceutical companies are now required by law to disclose how much money has been paid to doctors, teaching hospitals and other companies to promote their products.
This disclosure has provided Americans with insight into the motive behind their doctor or hospital’s prescriptions, and the adverse effects of this practice.
The Law Firm created the below infographic using the resulting information to shine a light on the specific doctors profiting from big pharma. In just over a year, the biggest pharmaceutical companies in the U.S. spent $3.49 billion in payments to doctors, teaching hospitals and other companies.
Doctors practicing family medicine, pediatric critical care, orthopaedic surgery, cardiovascular medicine and neurological surgery are among the top earners – with the top spending pharmaceutical company, Genentech Inc., spending $388 million to encourage doctors and hospitals to prescribe their drugs Valium, Klonopin and Xenical. The side effects of these drugs range from blurred vision to hallucinations and severe liver and kidney problems.
Pharmaceutical companies such as Johnson & Johnson were found to be spending more than double on marketing than on research and development, and they aren’t alone. 90% of pharma companies engage in this practice, including Pfizer and AstraZeneca.
This information makes the following data no surprise. The average American adult has 12 drug prescriptions per year, rising to 27 for seniors. The effects of such a high number of drugs has significant effects on our health and finances. The U.S. was found to spend $1,112 per capita on prescription drugs – more than any other country in the world, and four times more than the $279 per capita spent in Mexico.
The infographic suggests using an approach outlined by Dr. Gordon Schiff, which is focused on preventative care and lifestyle changes, as well as a cautious approach to drug prescribing.
