Everyone is always talking about Emma Watson in Beauty and the Beast and what Daniel Radcliffe is up to. Hey, even Dumbledore, Ginny, and Ron get the attention they deserve. But what about those secondary characters? Sure, if they are insanely famous like Robert Pattinson as Cedric, well, they will be more than researched and hit headlines on a weekly basis. Don’t get me wrong. Everyone loves Emma Watson and what she is doing with her life is really amazing. But I think it’s time the other characters get their time too.
But first, I want to mention those who have fallen, such as Richard Thomas Griffiths who played Vernon Dursley. He passed away in 2013 due to heart surgery complications. Or what about Frank Bryce, the caretaker in The Goblet of Fire, who died of an illness at almost 90 years old. There are a few more and I’d like to take a moment to commemorate their time acting…okay, now moving on!
We have those who have left acting, like Gregory Goyle, who became an MMA fighter. And his best friend in the movies, Vincent Crabbe, ended up going to prison after being charged with possession of drugs, possessing a weapon, and partaking in riots. So, we have characters that have passed away, those who have moved on, and those who are overly famous. But what about those who no one really knows about? Let’s give those secondary characters a little time to shine. If you’ve always wondered where they are today after ten plus years, well, you’ve come to the right place!
15. Neville Longbottom – Matthew Lewis
Appearance-wise, Neville, or Matthew, has changed more than almost anyone. Since the Harry Potter movie series came to an end, he has starred in series such as Ripper Street and Happy Valley. The boy was shy, clumsy, awkward, and dorky, being told he wasn’t good enough around every corner.
But in real life, boy, the man is professional, intelligent, good-looking, together, and determined. He eventually stands up for his friends in the movies, but Matthew Lewis is much more confident than Neville Longbottom. And with good reason. He was voted one of the hottest male stars of the decade! He has had a successful career thus far and hopes to one day star in a war film. I can see him as a war hero.
14. Angelina Johnson – Danielle Tabor
The Quidditch Chaser for Gryffindor was played by two actors, Tiana Benjamin for her last appearance, and Danielle for her first three. She was Lee Jordan’s crush (though she later married his friend George), and goes on to be captain of the Quidditch team Harry’s fifth year.
Danielle Tabor dropped out of acting shortly after the movies were released. She is now a personal trainer who helps people with their body image. Rather than becoming just another skinny girl, she believes in toning your body and not focusing on the scale, but rather your health. She wants everyone to love themselves! For at one time, after being called fatso by boys at school, she developed an unhealthy obsession with what she thought was fitness. But just look at her now! You go girl! She recently got engaged and is working on some new stuff with YouTuber Dan TDM.
13. Young Tom Riddle – Frank Dillane
I’m guessing you haven’t connected the dots here. But remember Young Tom Riddle from Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince? Well, that role was played by a young Frank Dillane. Since then, he’s had his major roles, like playing Henry Coffin in In the Heart of the Sea. But his most famous role to date is as Nick Clark in Fear the Walking Dead. He doesn’t look like no Voldemort now, does he? Mostly because…you know, the hair and nose, but that’s beside the point.
Probably the biggest difference in his appearance that would confuse you is those blue eyes in Harry Potter. He wore blue contacts because his eyes are naturally brown! He was just a kid back then, but now, he’s in the middle of making some major productions, so stay tuned to see where he goes from here!
12. Bill Weasley – Domhnall Gleeson
The elder Weasley brother wasn’t exactly a star in the movies, but in real life, he’s actually become pretty successful. Sure, he was in charge as both a Prefect and a Head Boy as Bill Weasley, but as of late, he’s been landing big roles, such as being Captain Andrew Henry in The Revenant, appearing in About Time alongside Rachel McAdams, and the even bigger role of General Hux in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
He is currently filming or in post-production of many films and shows, such as the new Star Wars movie, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and various others where he will be associated with children’s books like Peter Rabbit and Winnie the Pooh. He pretty much looks like Bill as of 2017, only without the long hair and a little added scruff.
11. Luna Lovegood – Evanna Lynch
Luna Lovegood was a much loved character in the Harry Potter movies. But no one looks at the actress behind the well-portrayed Luna. Her name is Evanna Lynch, who is currently blowing up Twitter with her vegan beliefs. She is also starring in plays such as Disco Pigs, a revival of the 2001 movie. This could be big, but her 2015 film My Name is Emily would be her biggest hit since the Harry Potter movies. She also appeared in the movie GBF as a super religious high school student.
Her social media accounts suggest she’s still very close to co-star Ginny Weasley, or the actress/activist Bonnie Wright, who is rocking it by staying down-to-earth. Evanna isn’t just an outspoken vegan, but fights for people with eating disorders due to the fact that she battled anorexia before starring in Harry Potter.
10. Draco Malfoy – Tom Felton
It’s hard to see Tom Felton as anyone but Draco Malfoy, one of the most hated characters in the series. He was weak, and as much as the diehard fans wanted to dislike him, it was hard not to feel sorry for him. But there’s no need to feel sorry for Tom Felton. I mean look at him!
His biggest film aside from those movies was probably Rise of the Planet of the Apes, but he has more interests than acting. He loves music and owns the company Six String Productions that helps out young musicians. He’s known as one of the nicest guys in Hollywood, especially to kids! If you want to see him in action today, check out The Flash on Netflix where he plays Doctor Alchemy!
9. Lee Jordan – Luke Youngblood
Lee Jordan is the animated commentator for the Quidditch matches that we all enjoyed watching. He enjoyed playing tricks on fellow classmates with Fred and George Weasley. After Harry Potter, he went on to star in shows like Community and Galavant, both fairly big hits. Today, he can be seen starring and guest starring in musicals and is starting to partner up with Nickelodeon for a new show that will draw in fans of The Regular Show and Steven Universe.
Fans of his are following him on Instagram where he posts updates nearly every day, so head on over there to check him out. You won’t regret it! He’s always modeling, chilling at the beach or with friends somewhere! As out there as Lee Jordan was, Luke seems like a well-rounded guy!
8. Xenophilius Lovegood – Rhys Ifans
No one would recognize Rhys Ifans today. He looks nothing like Luna’s father from the Harry Potter movies. One of the oddest things about him, besides him starring in rom-coms like Notting Hill, is that he is in not one, but two rock bands, The Perth, and the more popular, Super Furry Animals, which just got back together in 2015 after a five-year break. The band was deemed “one of the most imaginative bands of our time” by Billboard magazine.
In 2012, he played The Lizard in The Amazing Spider-Man, and continues to do good work on a regular basis. The eccentric actor has said his favorite place to be is the pub. “Where the real magic happens,” he claims.
7. Remus Lupis – David Thewlis
Remus Lupin was called the best actor, playing the best character of 2004. Lupin was so mysterious, unpredictable, and shady. In the end, we all love the lycanthrope, but the ups and downs had us second guessing ourselves on several occasions.
So, what has he been up to since then? Oh, just winning nominations and praise for his roles in Dragonheart, Kingdom of Heaven, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, The Theory of Everything, Black Beauty, Macbeth, and most recently, Wonder Woman. Bonus? He played a character in the World of Warcraft games called Lord Darius Crowley. Funny enough, he was Worgen, a wolf-like race on the game. This is one of the only things he’s done lately that kids would be able to see, because David Thewlis has been doing little but TV-MA or R-rated content focused on…more sensual subjects.
6. Bellatrix Lestrange – Helena Bonham Carter
Here’s another one it’s hard to see as anyone except Bellatrix. Though she’s beautiful as both Bellatrix and Helena, Bellatrix is self-proclaimed as The Dark Lord’s most powerful and loyal servant. We hate her every step she takes, as interesting and insane as she is.
Bellatrix isn’t her only odd character, she also played the Queen of Hearts in Alice in Wonderland and Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd. The list of great films she plays in doesn’t stop and it likely never will, considering she has multiple movies, including Oceans Eight, set to be released 2018.
Oh yeah, and if you’re wondering why she is so strange, just think about this for a second. She was in five plus Tim Burton films. And oh yeah, she has two kids with the director!
5. The Weird Sisters
Remember the popular band that performed at the 1994 Yule Ball at Hogwarts? The Weird Sisters? They aren’t named in the movie as there was a legal dispute over the name. But they are more famous than you thought. The band was made up of Jarvis Cocker and Steve Mackey from the band Pulp, Jonny Greenwood and Phil Selway from Radiohead, Jason Buckle from All Seeing I, and Steven Claydon from Add N to (X).
Jarvis Crocker wrote all of the songs the band performed in the movies. He is still performing, as is Steve Mackey who even won Ivor Novello Award in 2017 for Outstanding Song Collection. And we all know that Radiohead is still at it, with the Rolling Stones calling Jonny Greenwood, their guitarist, one of the best guitarists in history.
4. Lucius Malfoy – Jason Isaacs
For those of you who did like Draco, it’s not likely you liked his father, Lucius, the racist, arrogant man responsible for everything bad about Draco. Don’t let that make you dislike Jason Isaacs though. He himself says that “I play all these tough guys and thugs and strong, complex characters. In real life, I am a cringing, neurotic Jewish mess.” He wishes he could play that role at least once!
It looks like that dream may not come true yet. He is set to appear in Star Trek: Discovery for CBS All Access as Captain Lorca, Captain of the Starship Discovery. Being a nerd himself, he’s starred in six video games, two being Castlevania games and another being 2016’s Hitman. It took a bit for this usually “strong, complex character” man to play Satan in the Castlevania games.
3. Sirius Black – Gary Oldman
Sirius Black was played by three actors in the Harry Potter movies; by James Walters as child in 2007 and Rohan Gotobed as a teen in 2011. But as an adult, he was played by Gary Oldman. Coming from a pure blooded family of Slytherins, who was sorted into Gryffindor, he became best friends with Lupin and James Potter.
His most reputable role since Harry Potter is likely as Commissioner Gordon in the Dark Knight trilogy. But that may get trumped when the movie where he plays Winston Churchill comes out! He has been mixed up in some controversy as of late when he sided with Mel Gibson as far as racism and antisemitism is concerned. Most of the time, though, he seems pretty chill, saying he likes acting, but he doesn’t like to be famous.
2. Dudley Dursley – Harry Melling
Everyone knows Dudley Dursley, Harry Potter’s cousin, raised as his brother. He was rather cruel to Harry due to the way his parents treated them both. But he was also overweight and rather dense. Unlike Harry Melling, who had dropped so much weight that in the last movies he had to wear a fat suit to portray Dudley correctly! Looking at him, you can see there is no Dudley left at all!
He was ecstatic with the new change as he could start a new career, with no one seeing him as Dudley anymore. He’s been acting here and there but is currently trying to set up a film production company with a friend of his. No doubt his friends from Harry Potter will be the first notified when he launches the company!
1. Young Albus Dumbledore – Toby Regbo
The young Albus was played by none other than Toby Regbo in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1. Since then, he’s played alongside Anne Hathaway in One Day, but really gets the gold for his series, like Reign where he played the reoccurring role of King Francis II of France. Then the same could be said for his role as Æthelred, Lord of the Mercians in The Last Kingdom.
You definitely wouldn’t recognize the busy man today, who is no longer the fresh faced Albus that we witnessed in the Harry Potter films, but he’s now the twenty-something, model-worthy man who has really made something of himself. Being known for playing Albus can’t be a bad thing though, just as Jude Law who will play him in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts movie must think.
