Heroines in film continue to grow in this day and age when women are now becoming a bigger part of Hollywood than ever before. Female remakes of movies are occurring, such as Ghostbusters, and while that did not live up to the hype at all, there are other films in which the ladies stood out. They continue to do so and Hollywood has started to pay attention to them even more than they did before.
This has been huge for the female movement in movies and sports. However, while many of the women in these movies or sports are obviously good at what they do, the money is in the looks for everyone. You cannot become a star if you don’t have a marketable look, and that alone is the reason why women in Hollywood will always be around. Women sell movies just as much as men, and for multiple reasons.
To many women, the ladies in cinema are iconic and take a stand for female empowerment and opportunity. For many men, the women are good looking and you’re okay with watching the movie if only to check them out. Whether you watch a movie with Emma Stone because she is great at acting or because she is beautiful should not matter, she is selling you on the product and that is a big deal in itself.
We at TheRichest felt it would be good to highlight the 15 heroines of film and the badass types that go above and beyond to deliver an awesome performance in action and look good doing it.
15. Daisy Ridley – Rey (The Force Awakens)
I’ll admit it, I’m a Daisy Ridley mark. She is beautiful and reminds the world of the 1990’s when fresh actresses would show up in blockbuster films that helped make them stars that still work today. Long gone seemingly are those days, so when Disney decided to cast relative unknowns as the leads of Star Wars: The Force Awakens…it was a very strange thing to many. Not only did it work, but Ridley stood out as a great heroine in the film as Rey.
She was able to become iconic in the film like Natalie Portman was from the prequel movies. However, her role was much bigger than Portman’s. Disney loves to focus on females as their top stars in their TV series material, but this is the first time they made the focus happen to one of their blockbusters outside of animated material. The fact that they did so with Daisy was unique because it did not happen often and it was a perfect time to try something new. Ridley is set to become THE star in the next series of Star Wars films so we will see a lot of her.
14. Chloe Grace Moretz – Hit-Girl (Kick-Ass)
Chloe Grace Moretz truly stood out when we first saw her as Hit-Girl in the movie Kick-Ass. She became an even bigger star after the Kick-Ass 2 movie came out. She started out as a little girl that could kick ass and then developed into a gorgeous actress that could use that as her main focus. However, she has since tried to keep to her roots of action but has dived into romantic chick flick material too. She also took part in The 5th Wave, which had mixed reviews but could have become a series. She has starred in other big films, but both of these films showed her range as a heroine.
The theory among most is that Moretz could become a huge action star going forward if Hollywood finally gives her the right roles as a solo project. She has been doing a lot as of late, whether it is comedy or drama. However, many know she will eventually get back into the world of action. That being said, she is still killing it in everything she takes part in and will continue to develop into an even more beautiful young lady as time passes.
13. Emily Blunt -Sergeant Rita Rose Vrataski (Edge of Tomorrow)
Emily Blunt is known mostly for her roles in movies where she plays wild characters that are either very interesting or simple enough for kids to understand. However, her roles in movies like Girl on the Train and Edge of Tomorrow really do highlight both her acting ability and action range. Edge focuses primarily on Tom Cruise, but Blunt steals the movie a lot with her badass ways.
Blunt tends to always steal every scene she is in, whether it is in Devil Wears Prada or of course in Edge of Tomorrow. Regardless of what movie she is part of, she is often the one who you cannot take your eyes off of either due to her beauty and impressive acting chops.
12. Emma Watson – Hermione Granger (Harry Potter)
Emma Watson will be starring as Belle in Disney’s live adaptation of Beauty and the Beast this year, and while Bella was sort of a heroine it was her work as Hermione Granger really helped her land on this list. Growing up with Harry Potter, many of us saw the evolution of Emma Watson as we evolved ourselves. By the time the third film hit, Hermione was not a little girl anymore and we were really wondering about things. As the films continued we were all invested in Emma Watson.
She has not been in a ton of hit films since the Harry Potter series barring the biblical epic Noah, but she has managed to still stay in the news and limelight for random things she has done from commercials and modeling.
Emma has continued to get even more beautiful as time has gone on and her heroine work has helped make her stand out in Hollywood. Here’s hoping she gets involved in action because we all saw her toughness as Hermione and know she could do it again.
11. Shailene Woodley – Tris Prior (Divergent)
Depending on who you ask, Shailene Woodley is either Tris Prior from the Divergent series or she is Hazel Grace Lancaster from the Fault in our Stars. Really, regardless of what movie is your favorite you will surely agree that she managed to stand out big time. It was her role in the Divergent series really helped her break through in Hollywood when many did not know her name or cared to know it. She is beautiful and that is easy to notice, but what is not easy to notice is how good of a badass someone can be until you watch them do it.
As Tris, she managed to kill it in the first Divergent film. The first Divergent film came out in 2014, the second in 2015, and the third in 2016. A fourth is on the way, but there is no timetable on it currently. Regardless, the last number of years she has proven that she can be an impressive actress, but also that she can be one heck of a badass heroine.
10. Zoe Saldana – Gamora (Guardians of the Galaxy)
Zoe Saldana has really managed to stand out the last few years, but it has mostly been due to her action roles. She made us first notice her in Avatar, which was supposedly set to be a series but has yet to be done in years. She then got involved in Star Trek as Nyota Uhura where she became a popular heroine in the series. However, her biggest role yet is as Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy. The second comes out this year and she will yet again stand out.
She has always been gorgeous in every part she has taken, but when she plays a badass we’re all happy for it, mainly because she is quite good at it (especially as the lovely green Gamora). There is no harm in being attracted to someone who is green, and even if there was, we won’t tell your therapist. Regardless of how you feel about her in her non-action roles, she surely stands out in her action movies.
9. Kate Beckinsale – Selene (Underworld)
It is truly very hard to believe that Kate Beckinsale is in her 40s. She is the definition of beauty coming with age. She has not missed a beat in her career when it came to action roles. She first stood out as an action heroine in Van Helsing then got involved with her most iconic role, playing Selene in the Underworld series. Kate manages to continue making Underworld movies despite many believing the series to be done many times over. We’re not that upset to see it either, as those leather outfits never seem to look bad on her.
Selene always comes back with something even crazier than before, which is great for fans as we get to see more Kate. Yet another Underworld film came out in 2016 and there is a theory that we could still see more despite what anyone may claim. Kate stands out as a great heroine in them and no one can ever talk negatively about her and her badass ways after watching them.
8. Keira Knightley – Elizabeth (Pirates of the Caribbean)
Keira Knightley first came into our homes when she showed up in Episode I of Star Wars for a small role. She then starred in Pirates of the Caribbean as Elizabeth, who at first was just another damsel in distress but would eventually become a dangerous threat herself. She would end up becoming a heroine simply by proxy…she had to be. That was the fact that she could not escape.
Not only would Keira have to pull off random acts of great swordsmanship, but she would end up using her female charm to get what she needed. Due to her good looks, she could easily make this happen on a regular basis. Captain Jack Sparrow was often weakened due to Elizabeth in this way. If you can believe it, the first Pirates film she took part in went down in 2003, and she has remained just as gorgeous as the first time we saw her. Knightley is set to reprise her role in the new Pirates film that comes out later this year. It’s certainly not going to upset people to see her come back to the world we first fell in love with her at.
7. Charlize Theron – Imperator Furiosa (Mad Max: Fury Road)
Charlize Theron has been in a ton of great films. She would always look good seemingly in every film, then a movie called Monster came out where she changed her entire body around. She was not exactly a heroine there, as she was kinda the bad guy, but she did become a memorable heroine in movies like Mad Max: Fury Road. In this movie, she was basically a co-lead with Tom Hardy who was playing the title character.
Outside of Mad Max, Theron has been involved in a lot of action such as Prometheus and The Italian Job. Next, Theron takes to Fate and the Furious which comes out this summer.
Action movies is clearly an easy road for her to go down, and whether she is playing the villain or the heroine, she is very good in this world. It is believed another Mad Max film will come out in the next few years, meaning we can expect even more action films from Theron. Thankfully due to the genre being a forte of hers, we won’t be upset with that decision.
6. Angelina Jolie – Lara Croft (Tomb Raider)
Angelina Jolie has been involved in a lot of top tier films as a heroine. She was obviously Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider series, which as a video game really made most boys grow into men. Of course, the movies were even better with Jolie involved. This was not the last bit of action she did as she took part in Mr. and Mrs. Smith with co-star and eventual husband Brad Pitt where she played an assassin of sorts.
Tomb Raider alone got her on this list, but she has also been involved in a lot of movies where she had to be the sub-heroine by need alone like with the movie The Tourist.
Sometimes you have to be when the movie may not fully be about you but you steal the show and end up being part of a ruse at the very end. It is clear that Angelina Jolie is gorgeous, and it is also clear that she is great as a heroine in top action films. The question is, when will we see her in another action movie?
5. Gal Gadot – Wonder Woman (Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice)
Gal Gadot starred as Wonder Woman in the big Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice film last summer and will reprise the same role in the Wonder Woman film later this year. Clearly, Gal is a major heroine in this role, and that is as obvious as can be. However, she did not get this role because she was beautiful alone. She is, but she also got the role because it was known that she could do action well. She was, of course, involved in the Fast and Furious franchise as Gisele. She was killed off due to the Wonder Woman role but many felt she could have been a big star for the franchise for years to come if she did not have to move on.
She has continued in action since, starring in Criminal where she did not play up a heroine role because her role was small in comparison. She also played a spy in Keeping up with the Joneses that came out in 2016. She will be a big star as Wonder Woman for years to come as a heroine, so we will keep adding her to lists like this until the end of time due to this massive role. Wonder Woman is a female role model type that is the Queen of all feminism. Which means the word heroine is a major deal for her, so we’ve gotta put her on this list in order to not get cut by her. Yes, we’re afraid.
4. Jessica Alba – Sue Storm (Fantastic Four)
Jessica Alba is one of the most beautiful women in the world, which goes without saying. She has managed to play the heroine role incredibly well over the years starring in Dark Angel for television. Then, of course, she would star in Sin City and obviously played Sue Storm in the original Fantastic Four series, which clearly puts her near the top of any list.
Whenever Alba plays an action role where she often appears like a heroine rather than being some sort of damsel, which is why she is beloved by both men and women. Everyone has come to believe she could be awesome in the action role, so no one questions it like we have with other actresses. Often times some women do not really make their action roles believable. However, Alba does not have this issue. The moment she is involved with an action product, we now expect her to be a badass. She never lets us down, and that is always a good thing in the world of film. Reliability is expected and Alba gives it.
3. Scarlett Johansson – Black Widow (Marvel Cinematic Universe)
Scarlett Johansson is one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood, but she is also one of the biggest badasses in all of Hollywood…male or female. She, of course, plays Black Widow as part of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. She has come off very well in the role and in her tight leather outfit too nonetheless. No one can really hate on Widow’s costume as it always fits her well. But did you know she was once playing the Widow character while pregnant? Yes, she was able to come off hot and as a huge badass despite having to deal with those unwanted pregnancy symptoms. Now that is awesome.
However, Black Widow is not the only heroine character she has played. She was the title character in a movie called Lucy, where she sort of ended up as a heroine by need. She is now taking part in a movie called Ghost in the Shell where she will come off as a heroine as well. Scarlett has played in several top roles and Black Widow will always be what she is most known for. However, she may continue to be involved in other action films. She is a believable assassin as Widow, so if she did similar material we would all buy her in the role. Let’s hope she continues.
2. Margot Robbie – Harley Quinn (Suicide Squad)
Margot Robbie is one of the hottest actresses in the world today and because of her hotness, she has been added to films simply to help sell it to people. They had her be in a bubble bath to help sell The Big Short and Wolf of Wall Street sees Margot in all her glory on numerous occasions…which we’re not complaining about. However, she has also managed to play top heroine roles the last few years.
She plays Jane in Tarzan, which was not as big of a heroine as needed but she did play a huge part in the movie and will be a bigger part if it becomes a franchise. Jane did a lot as the lead female, but the movie was all about Tarzan, so she did mini-action parts that sold the movie well for her.
She was also involved as a heroine type in the movie Focus. Of course, her big role comes as Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad where we can expect to see her often for the next number of years. Now obviously this is a movie about villains, however, she plays a hero (even if not completely by choice). That being said, if Harley does qualify as a heroine, so does Robbie. Yes, it is a small loop-hole but we’re totally cool with it.
1. Jennifer Lawrence – Katniss Everdeen (The Hunger Games)
Possibly one of the biggest stars in Hollywood today is Jennifer Lawrence. She has become sort of a new generational female icon due to her major roles she has taken on. She first got noticed for Winter’s Bone, where she played a heroine role of sorts. However, once she became Katniss Everdeen for Hunger Games it was all over and the new top heroine in Hollywood was born with no real equal. Of course, she has also become a top heroine type in movies like Passengers and Joy.
However, another top role she has taken part in is the X-Men series of films where she plays Raven (better known as Mystique). Obviously, for those unaware, Mystique was a villain in the comics but did play the hero role here and there. Due to the reset of the universe, she is now a heroine in the films, which has worked out well for Lawrence.
While she does have to go blue for the films which can hide her gorgeous face…she often uses her human form in the movies too. Regardless, she has become one of the top heroines in all of Hollywood. Being part of two major series’ like Hunger Games and X-Men on top of the other roles is simply too much to pass over. She’s the top and may continue to be as long as she takes on roles like this.
