“It does my heart a world of good, to see you in a box of wood,” – Unknown. Isn’t it a funny thing how horror, terror, and the fear of the unknown rejuvenate us? From zombies, to vampires, to werewolves, to dolls, to serial killers, and men in masks, and paranormal activities, we can’t get enough of the horror movie genre. Many of us live to feel that rush, that sensation of panic and fear building up in the back of our spines. We love to be truly frightened. We love to be stiff at the edge of our seats, all the while holding a half-closed hand in front of our face, preparing for the unknown. You never know what is going to happen in a scary movie but that’s the raw beauty of it. 2017 is going to be the year of remakes and sequels. Once you see the lineup, many familiar titles will jolt your memory, especially from ours and our parents’ childhoods. And so here is a list of the most ghoulish and jaw-dropping horror films coming out this year. However we must warn you. Reader beware, you’re in for a scare.
15. The Bye Bye Man: January, 13, 2017
Starting off the year is the thriller/horror film directed by Stacy Title, The Bye Bye Man. The movie tells the tale of three college students who stumble upon the terrifying origins of the Bye Bye Man. They soon discover the only way to escape his curse and not allow him to take over in your head is to: don’t say it, don’t think it. If only it were that easy. When someone tells you not to think of an elephant what do you do? You took the words right out of my mouth, you think of an elephant. The film came out in theaters January 13. It has a sort of Slender Man vibe to it since the Bye Bye Man looks like a long and slender black figure.
14. Split: January, 20, 2017
M. Night Shyamalan is a director for the ages. He is one of a kind with his creative storytelling and psychological twists that he puts into his movies. He has directed many incredible films such as The Sixth Sense, Signs, Unbreakable, The Village, and most recently the 2015 thriller The Visit. He is back once again with his new creation, Split. The movie is about a man named Kevin (played by James McAvoy) who suffers from dissociative identity disorder and has 24 distinct personalities. He kidnaps three girls who must figure out which of Kevin’s personalities can help them escape and hopefully stay alive from the others. Split was released in theaters January 20. By watching the trailers alone it looks like James McAvoy gave the performance of a lifetime, taking on many different characters to portray. Split could be the best psychological thriller of the year, and perhaps one of the best films M. Night Shyamalan has directed.
13. Rings: Feb. 3, 2017
Most of us can never forget that scary movie back in 2002 where you watched a videotape and died or when a girl with greasy black hair climbed out of a well. Many of us would prank call anyone we could think of just to say the famous words, “You’re going to die in seven days.” All because of the supernatural thriller that was, The Ring. Directed by Gore Verbinski, this movie was beyond haunting and one that got under your skin and lingered there. Now, over a decade later, The Ring is back with its new film Rings which will be released on February 3. This time around the storyline is about a young woman who becomes worried about her boyfriend when he watches a mysterious videotape that is supposed to kill you seven days after viewing it. So she decides to sacrifice herself in order to save him but in doing so makes a disturbing discovery: there happens to be a movie within the movie… and no one has seen it before. Watch it. If you dare.
12. A Cure For Wellness: Feb. 17, 2017
We sure think we will get our “fix” with the upcoming film A Cure For Wellness. The movie is directed by Gore Verbinski and is about a young executive named Lockhart (played by Dane DeHaan) who is sent to by his company to retrieve their CEO from a mysterious and remote “wellness center.” He soon suspects these unbelievable treatments are not what they seem to be and starts to unravel the center’s terrifying secrets. The film also stars well-known actor Jason Isaacs as the facility’s director. You can catch A Cure For Wellness in theaters on February 17. It seems many can’t wait to get a taste of their own medicine and satisfy their needs for a mystery thriller because 93% of people already want to see it according to Rotten Tomatoes. Stop treating the symptom, leave your troubles behind, and take the cure. Our final diagnosis is that this is going to be one “sick” movie!
11. Jeepers Creepers 3: Cathedral: 2017
When it comes to the scariest opening scenes in horror movie history Jeepers Creepers is at the top of that list. Only five minutes into the film we see a brother (Justin Long) and sister (Gina Philips) driving down a highway in the middle of nowhere. Next thing you know they see a tall dark figure throw something wrapped in tarp with blood stains, very much resembling a body, down a pipe as it turns to stare at them while passing by. Then this “creature” of a man franticly runs to his truck and speeds off after them. After hearing the song play over and over “Jeepers creepers, where’d you get them peepers? Jeepers creepers, where’d you get those eyes?” and Justin Long getting his eyes removed from their sockets, we were completely freaked out by the end of the film. Avoiding deserted highways became a sort of hobby. It has been since 2003 that a Jeepers Creepers movie was released and the flesh-eating being is back. Jeepers Creepers 3: Cathedral is coming sometime this year (the specific date isn’t specified). This time around it will finally reveal the Creeper’s background as well as focusing on Jeepers Creepers original character Trish. She now greatly tries to prevent her son from meeting the same fate as her brother, and hopes to stop The Creeper once and for all.
10. Death House: 2017
Widely becoming known as The Expendables of horror, Death House flaunts an impressive cast when it comes to the scary movie genre. You can expect to see Tony Todd from Candyman, Kane Hodder from Friday the 13th, Barbara Crampton from Re-Animator, Sid Haig and Bill Moseley from The Devil’s Rejects, and last but not least Dee Wallace and Michael Berryman from The Hills Have Eyes. The film follows two federal agents who fight their way through nine levels of Hell inside a secret prison known as Death House. Sounds like a potentially great idea for a haunted house. With such a thrilling and all-star cast this movie is definitely appealing to any horror movie goer out there. No matter what happens on film, which will be released sometime this year, it has the potential to be truly frightening and terrific. Let’s just hope they can pull off a better movie than The Expendables. That was a horror fest in itself.
9. Get Out: Feb. 24, 2017
If that title isn’t a warning in itself we don’t know what is. Get Out is an upcoming horror flick about a young African American man named Chris (played by Daniel Kaluuya) who goes to visit his Caucasian girlfriend Rose (played by Allison Williams) and her family at their home. In the beginning, Chris reads the family’s overly compliant behavior as a part of their nerves and an attempt to deal with the fact that their daughter is dating a man of color. But as the weekend develops, he continues to discover something beyond disturbing, something he could have never even imagined. The film is set to be directed and written by comedian Jordan Peele from the Key & Peele show and is his directorial debut. Get Out also has two well-known names added to their cast such as Catherine Keener from The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Bradley Whitford from The West Wing and Cabin In The Woods. The movie will be released on February 24, and from the trailers it seems brilliant satire and slick scares will be thrown into the mix, quite unlike anything you are used to seeing.
8. The Belko Experiment: March 17, 2017
Have you ever felt like killing your boss? Well, now is your chance— to live vicariously through the characters in this movie. Sort of… The Belko Experiment takes the savagery of office politics to an all new level as 80 Americans are locked in their corporate office along with 83 desk drones. They quickly are forced to make an incredibly difficult and deadly decision. Participate in a deadly game of killing your coworker… or be killed yourself. Greg McLean, who wrote and produced Wolf Creek, is going to direct what seems to be a severely sadistic, nasty, and nail biting show. When we say an A-list cast this film hits the jackpot. The Belko Experiment will star John Gallagher Jr., John C. McGinley, Tony Goldwyn, and Adria Arjona just to name a few. You can watch the experiment take place on March 17. Bring a friend along, a coworker, perhaps even your boss. Maybe they will find it quite enlightening. One can only hope.
7. Keep Watching: March 24, 2017
Three deranged serial killers, going by the names of Mysterious, Terror, and Creator, break into a family’s home holding them hostage and forcing them all to play a life and death game where the rules only become clearer as the night goes on. The family must stick together in order to get out alive, and unbeknownst to the intruders, have hidden cameras set up throughout the house recording everything that’s taking place. This deadly game of cat-and-mouse sounds very engaging and enticing, a film that is more than your typical slasher. Keep Watching has a few familiar names in its cast such as Bella Thorne, playing the role as Jamie, and Ioan Gruffudd (Fantastic Four) playing Carl. You will also get to see Saw’s Leigh Whannell and The Walking Dead’s Chandler Riggs. The movie is set to be released on March 24. We hope you check it out. But most of all, keep watching… if you dare.
6. The Dark Tapes: March 2017
The Dark Tapes is a 2017 found footage science fiction horror collection film that will be released sometime this March. Directed by Vincent J. Guastini and Michael McQuown the storyline is a mixture of horror, sci-fi, myth, mystery and thrills. You will see ghosts. You will see spirits. You will see creatures. You will see demons. But most of all you will see more from the paranormal world crash with cogent curiosity. The movie has already gone on to win 14 awards and has been nominated for 22 nominations and also won for “Best Ensemble Cast” in the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival Awards. The main cast will consist of Brittany Underwood, David Hull, Cortney Palm, Emilia Ares Zoryan, Anna Rose Moore, and Shawn Lockie. Get ready to face the unknown this year. The Dark Tapes is a movie that is supposed to truly haunt. A one-of-a-kind film with a Donnie Darko-esque feel and a film everyone must watch at least once.
5. Annabelle 2: August, 11, 2017
She’s back! After the success of 2014’s Annabelle, which took home almost $257 million worldwide at the box office, Annabelle is back and scarier than ever. This film takes place several years after the tragic death of a couple’s (a doll maker and his wife) little girl. They welcome into their home a nun and several girls from an orphanage that closed, and soon become the target of the doll maker’s creation, Annabelle. The film is directed by David Sandberg, who also directed the 2016 thriller Lights Out, and will be produced once again by Peter Safran and James Wan, who also partnered perfectly on The Conjuring movies. Annabelle 2 is set to be released on August 11. Much like the Chucky franchise films, people love their movies with creepy dolls and Annabelle seems to do just the trick.
4. It: September 8, 2017
One of the most iconic horror films in history will always be Stephen King’s, It. How can we forget the sickly demonic clown that was, Pennywise? Well, the wait is finally over because It is being remade and will be an adaptation of Stephen King’s 1986 horror novel. The film is expected to come out this year on September 8. The storyline will once again be about a small town in Maine where seven children, who form the group known as The Losers Club, come face to face with a horrifying creature that takes the shape of a clown. Pennywise the clown will be played by Bill Skarsgård, whose brother is Alexander Skarsgård (True Blood and The Legend Of Tarzan) and father is Stellan Skarsgård (Thor and Mama Mia). It will be directed by Andrés Muschietti who also wrote and directed Mama. We are dying to see this film (pun intended), and hope we can hear once again the eerie words being uttered, “We all float down here. They all float down here.”
3. Friday the 13th: October 13, 2017
Friday the 13th may be known as the unluckiest day of the year, but we feel pretty lucky to announce that we will get to see Jason back at it again with another remake of the film Friday The 13th. For those of you out there who suffer from paraskevidekatriaphobia, also known as fearing this cursed day, you might not be hitting up the theaters. But for the rest of us, we will be running to the movies as fast as we can, hockey mask and money in hand. The film is set to be released on October 13, and directed by Breck Eisner. Jason Vorhees returns as the legendary mass murderer and this time it is rumored we might finally meet his father Elias. We haven’t seen Jason on the screen since 2009 but we believe this will be a gruesomely great slasher and a much anticipated one at that.
2. Insidious 4: October, 20, 2017
A new chapter begins. Insidious is back with its fourth creation and is hitting theaters October 20th. As of right now the plot is unknown for this film but it has been rumored to be about Elise’s backstory, and might focus on her origin story. It is set to be directed by Adam Robitel who also directed The Taking Of Deborah Logan back in 2014. Leigh Whannell has written the previous three movies and is set to write once again for the fourth as well as reprise his role as Specs. The first Insidious film has still been the best yet. It will be interesting to see if this new chapter can capture the true horror it did from the very beginning. The original Insidious earned $97 million worldwide with only a $1.5 million budget. Insidious Chapter 2 performed a lot better in theaters, cashing in $161.9 million worldwide with a $5 million budget. And Insidious Chapter 3 earned $112.9 million worldwide with a $10 million budget. We will have to wait and see if the fourth chapter can continue the streak.
1. Saw: Legacy: October 27, 2017
“You might be in the room that you die in. So, do you wanna play a game?” We have a feeling we just grabbed almost everyone’s attention by those two little sentences. However, we cannot take all the credit. Those two lines are the most famous quotes from the extremely gruesome and great horror franchise, Saw. The original film came out over a decade ago in 2004 and introduced the world to jigsaw, a puzzling killer who kidnaps people he believes take their lives for granted and puts them through “tests”, normally some sort of mechanical device that is rigged to kill the subjects if they fail to complete it within a certain amount of time. The movie took the world by storm, and had huge success with a budget of only $1 million dollars and grossed $55 million in the U.S. So far, there have seven films in the Saw franchise, and Saw: Legacy will top that number to eight. The plot is unknown but we can tell you it will hit theaters October 27. See it or don’t see it. Make your choice. We know we can’t wait for the games to begin!
