17. Don Jon
Okay, so this isn’t a sex scene in the way that it contains actual sex, but it’s pretty damn steamy. When Scarlett Johansson’s character, Barbara, becomes involved with Jon (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) she uses their attraction to manipulate him into doing everything she wants. While devious manipulation isn’t usually a giant turn on, this hallway scene might make you change your mind. In this scene, Barbara teases Jon in the doorway of her apartment, using his super-lust to get him to agree to a few items on her list. It’s grind, kiss, grind, “I want you to meet my sisters.” Then grind, kiss, grind, “I think you should go back to school.” Jon is so caught up in the throes of this make-out session he agrees to everything she demands. She rewards him with some light first base stuff and he, ahem, finishes, in his jeans. Leave it to Scarlett Johansson to get our heart rate up without taking one item of clothing off.
Here’s another scene in which there’s no actual sex, but it is so, so, so hot. Salma Hayek plays the sensual and passionate Mexican painter, Frida Kahlo. Kahlo was beautiful, talented and was openly involved in relationships with both men and women. In this scene with Ashley Judd, who played Tina Modotti, the sexual chemistry practically crackles off the screen. You kinda just want to shout, “Kiss her, already.” This very steamy dance scene builds up the tension for a much more graphic scene later in the film, but the sexiness is in the suggestion. Frida and Tina dance the tango during this highly-charged scene, and it’s all hands and firm bodies pressed against each other. There is so much heat between Tina and Frida I think I broke out into an actual sweat.
15. Jessica Jones
Who says the hottest sex scenes have to be saved for feature-length films? One of 2015’s most erotic sex scenes happens in the Netflix series, Jessica Jones. Everybody was talking about that Jessica/Luke Cage matchup. As they slammed into walls, broke furniture, and practically hammered each other black and blue, they also formed one of the hottest couples of the year. Part of what makes this scene so intense is the sheer amount of strength between these two characters. Dysfunction aside, Jessica and Luke have an unspoken understanding of their respective dark and twisty pasts, and so there’s an inherent intimacy that develops. But make no mistake, the urgency of how they have at each other is pretty erotic, too. Because they are both superheroes with accompanying superhero strength, they don’t hold back with each other. I mean…. they broke the bed for eff’s sake. That’s some passion, folks.
14. Nymphomaniac I & II
This may seem a little on-the-nose, but Lars Von Trier’s two part thriller is clever and beautiful and not just because it’s so racy (which it totally is). These movies are the story of the sex-addicted, Joe (played by Charlotte Gainsbourg) and her recovery after she was beaten and left for dead. Of course, all her stories and reflections are about her various sexual encounters, but the story is about far more than just sex. And the movie has a lot of sex. I mean A LOT. These scenes run the gamut from extremely graphic to downright poignant. Pay special attention to Shia LaBeouf’s scenes. The two pretty much just devour each other, hands everywhere, climbing all over each other, and then just melding into one, writhing, sweating being.
13. Orange Is The New Black
There’s no shortage of steamy sex scenes in Netflix’s original series, so you could drop in on any season to get a little charge. The inmates in Litchfield prison have to get a little creative to carve out sexy time with each other, but that certainly doesn’t stop them from getting it done. Of all the relationships on the show, however, Alex and Piper are the most explosive and, frankly, the most captivating. In the third season of the series, at a time when Alex and Piper are on the outs, they get trapped in the library together and the most provocative bout of hate-sex ensues. The history between these two does away with any worries about how aggressive it gets, but it’s very satisfying. As an Orange Is The New Black fan, it really hit the spot to hear Alex tell Piper, “Turn over… Because I can’t stand to look at you.” Because Piper often, as Alex eloquently points out, “needs to get f**ed.”
12. On The Road
The 1950s weren’t known as the most sexually-open time in American history. It probably conjures images of June Cleaver, TV dinners, and the Cold War. But Jack Kerouac’s best selling novel, On The Road, reveals just how much sexing and drugging were really going on with the beat generation. In the movie adaptation, Kristen Stewart stars as the savvy, over-sexed teen, Marilou. Marilou sets out with two friends to travel America by car. While on the road trip, Marilou becomes involved with both of her male traveling mates. Maybe it’s the repressed 1950s setting or seeing Kristen Stewart in one of her most open and undone roles, but this movie is a real panty-dropper. Whether Marilou is rolling around in the bed with the hunky Dean or rolling around naked in the car with Dean and Sal, you just can’t look away. The naked-car scene is cheeky and flirty, and is a favorite because it really scratches that “I like to watch” itch.
11. Cruel Intentions
Sarah Michelle Gellar, long before she was our favorite vampire slayer, was the conniving, deceitful Kathryn Merteuil. She was also incredibly seductive and beguiling. The unholy alliance with Ryan Phillipe’s character, Sebastian, was one of the greatest collaborations of the decade. Kathryn and Sebastian, incestuous step-siblings, team up to corrupt the innocent, Cecille, played by Selma Blair. Kathryn and Sebastian, who have their own steamy romance, conspire to run schemes, deflower the innocent virgin, and seize their parents’ wealth. Cruel Intentions set the stage for Gossip Girl, revealing the seedy secret lives of Manhattan teenagers. Watching the very un-Buffy-like Kathryn seduce Cecille is the highlight of this film because it offers an adolescent twist on the age-old Madonna archetype. Bursting with hormones and teenage lust, this film gives its ‘80s counterpart, Dangerous Liaisons, a run for its money on the steam-o-meter.
10. Queer As Folk
One of the most groundbreaking series in recent TV history, Queer as Folk takes an unapologetic look at the lives of gay men and women living in the Liberty Avenue neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The show has been credited with being one of the first of its kind, breaking ground for LGTB representation on TV. Not only did it present a frank look at their love lives, it also took on contemporary health and social issues faced by the characters. It was also infamous for presenting mainstream America with an unflinching look at the sex lives of the gay man. One of the hottest scenes of the series comes in season 3, when the show’s main couple Justin and Brian, have sex in Brian’s office after Justin was just fired from an internship. There are constant themes of power and submission in the sexual dynamics between these two, and the assertion of authority adds an element of danger to the exchange.
It’s pretty common knowledge that sex in a pool is far more impractical in real life than it is in the movies. But for Showgirls, we can temporarily suspend our disbelief. Elizabeth Berkley, in an attempt to shake off her Saved By the Bell notoriety, took on the role of Nomi Malone. Nomi is the street-smart grifter who moves to Las Vegas to make it big as showgirl. She must work her way up through the ranks from basic stripper to head dancer, but she has to seek the help of a couple of slimy Vegas veterans. Cristal, played by Gina Gershon tries to mentor her, but she falls prey to the gross producer Zack Carey (Kyle MacLachlan) anyway. Of course, Nomi and Zack have sex in his pool, but once you get over the fear that Nomi might drown during all her thrashing and moaning, it actually gets pretty heated. Elizabeth Berkley took a lot of flack for this scene and it’s graphic nudity, but it’s still pretty hot to see Jesse Spano get down like that.
Not nearly as graphic as some of the other scenes on this list, Ghost comes in as “most romantic” sex scene and that can be pretty hot, too. After Patrick Swayze’s character, Sam, dies in a robbery gone bad, his spirit uses a cheesy medium (Whoopi Goldberg) to contact his grieving wife, Molly (Demi Moore). Before Sam was brutally murdered, they had a timeless love, as evidenced by one of the most iconic love scenes in cinema history. When Sam sits behind Molly at her potter’s wheel and the Righteous Brothers’ “Unchained Melody” starts playing in the background, women swooned in their theatre seats. When the action moves from the potter’s wheel to the bedroom, women across America rushed to sign up for pottery lessons. Much more intimate and tender than any other on the list, this scene is bittersweet because it shows what a great love they are losing when Sam dies.
7. Bitter Moon
If you can overlook that this movie is produced by notorious Roman Polanski, you can appreciate how it strikes the balance between dark comedy and erotic obsession. Starring a much younger Hugh Grant as Nigel, a mild-mannered man looking to rekindle his relationship with his wife, Fiona (Kristin Scott Thomas). Nigel and Fiona board an ocean liner on their way to India and meet a mysterious couple and Nigel promptly falls in love with the sexy, younger woman, Mimi (Emmanuelle Seigner). Mimi is married to a much older man played by Peter Coyote and there’s quite a bit of sexual swapping and naughty shenanigans. Things get dirty between Mimi and Nigel, as you can imagine. If you can suffer through the ‘90s cheese and silly music, the gritty love scene is well worth it.
In this German gross-out coming of age film, Helen (Carla Juri) is an 18-year rebel who sets out to break every social taboo – sexual and otherwise. Helen has a lot of emotional issues and seems to surround herself with people of the same ilk. In turn, she is constantly put into untenable and disquieting situations. The sex in this movie is sometimes of the non-traditional variety (which is a bit of an understatement) but if vegetable masturbation isn’t your thing just hang on because Wetlands offers a variety sex scenarios, and there’s bound to be something you can connect with. When Helen has an accident shaving, she has to go to the hospital and there she meets the coy nurse, Robin. Her infatuation with the clean-cut Robin is about as innocent as the sexual occurrences get, but beware, this movie does not flinch from any hard-to-watch moments.
5. Basic Instinct
In the ‘90s no one was sexier than Sharon Stone, and her role in the whodunnit solidified her place as the ultimate sexual goddess. Stone plays Catherine Tramell who is a suspect in the murder of a wealthy rockstar. Michael Douglas plays lead detective on the case, Nick Curran and his investigation into Tramell leads to a sexy cat and mouse game that culminates with the now-infamous leg-crossing scene. This scene was racy for it’s time, probably because audiences caught a glimpse of Ms. Stone’s lady bits. But this wasn’t even the steamiest scene of the film. Early in the movie, there is a very sexy scene depicting a blond woman, who is probably Catherine, and the murder victim engaging in some raucous lovemaking. This bedroom scene coupled with the shot of Stone’s crotch caused this movie to almost get a rating of NC-17.
4. Sex and Lucia
If you like your sex scenes with a fair amount of tear jerking, this Spanish critical darling is just the thing. After Lucia’s (Paz Vega) fiance commits suicide, she sets out on a journey of self-discovery and sexual awakening to the exotic islands her fiancee often wrote about. Her traveling leads her to a remote island where she meets a hunky scuba diver, Carlos, and a pretty innkeeper, Elena. Lucia and Elena’s friendship grows and they wind up bonding over their shared connection with the dead writer-fiance. The sex in this movie is equal parts dangerous, fun, and even sometimes meaningful. The movie won several critical awards and has been called, by some, the most erotic movie ever made, although that is probably a tad bit of an exaggeration.
For a show about a poor, working-class family on the Southside of Chicago, Shameless is surprisingly sexy, and well, completely shameless. There are countless moments of complete and utter debauchery, but none of the characters are as sexy as Fiona Gallagher. The oldest of the six siblings and the default matriarch of the Irish clan, Fiona’s ratio of bad decisions to responsible behavior is about 2:1. She’s had her fair share of sex, but one of the best (and worst, by some standards) is her extramarital tryst with her on again/off again boyfriend Steve. Almost immediately after tying the knot with the long-suffering Gus, she falls into bed with Steve and the urgent, angry sex that ensues is wildly arousing. Because Shameless isn’t afraid to make audiences hate their characters (at least for a little while anyway). Fiona sleeps with her new husband the very next morning, and it is decidedly less furious and impassioned.
2. Blue Is The Warmest Color
This coming of age romantic drama was a big hit at Cannes, and made headlines when it premiered in 2013. It is the story of two young French women whose relationship grows through their adolescence all way through young adulthood. The movie centers around Adele, a curious and introverted teenager who is 15 at the start of the film. Adele (Adèle Exarchopoulos) finds adventure in a blue-haired, adventurous free spirit, Emma (Léa Seydoux). Blue follows Adele beginning in her high school years all the way through her career as a school teacher. The sex scene in the film got a lot of attention for its gritty reality and frank handling of lesbian sex, yet it was not without criticism from some outlets. It’s incredibly erotic because there is little to no sexual gimmicks and the sex between the characters feels honest and genuine.
This movie might not be straight-up porn, but it’s about as close as you’re going to get on Netflix. Romance is a 1999 French art house film featuring explicit, unsimulated sex directed by Catherine Breillat. Caroline Ducey plays the sex-starved Maria whose boyfriend refuses to have sex with her. Maria searches for intimacy in other relationships (if you can call them that) and discovers a taste for sexual encounters that are push traditional boundaries. She has a series of encounters with increasing intensity, including a sadomasochistic relationship with a much older man. It’s this particular scene that is both erotic and, at times, unsettling. For authenticity sakes, Romance-director Breillat hired French porn star Rocco Siffredi to play Paolo, whom Marie goes to bed with after meeting him in a bar.
