Co-stars spend countless hours together when shooting a film or TV series. Shoot days are often long and grueling, with some scenes taking hours and even days to film. The co-stars, writers, directors, and crew spend so much time together that they become a family. Sometimes, co-stars spend so much time together that they form a bond and become BFFs. Other times, relationships don’t work out and co-stars can’t stand each other.

There are countless famous stories of co-stars having a bitter feud behind the scenes. Some had a deep hatred and disgust for each other. In many cases, the off-screen feud interfered with the onscreen chemistry. There have been several instances of feuds reaching a breaking point that one of the actors has to go. However, not all co-stars grow to hate each other. For several co-stars, they actually form an everlasting friendship. The onscreen chemistry carried over into real life, and the friendship became very real. Famous BFFs met on set and have been inseparable since that very day. Obviously, some people get along better than others but some BFFs and bitter enemies might be a bit surprising. Some of the most beloved film and TV series have consisted of either one or the other. Here is a look at 8 Co-stars that Despise Each Other and 8 That Became BFFs.

Blake Lively And Leighton Meester (Hate)

Serena van der Woodsen and Blair Waldorf were sometimes friendly; but for the most part, they were rivals. They were the two most popular girls in school and often found themselves at odds. It appears that the intense hatred that Serena and Blair had was no different for the actors that played the roles. Off-screen Blake Lively (Serena) and Leighton Meester (Blair) had a similar relationship as their counterparts. Blake and Leighton were co-stars in the CW drama Gossip Girl. In the early seasons, Blake and Leighton got along very well and were good friends. However, as the series progressed, the relationship deteriorated and tension started to grow. During the last two seasons, they were barely speaking with each other and never stayed in touch after the series concluded. Apparently, the straw that broke the camel’s back was when Blake didn’t call Leighton to congratulate her on her engagement to Adam Brody.

Chace Crawford And Ed Westwick (BFFs)

Behind the scenes of Gossip Girl, while tensions were growing between the women, a great bromance was brewing between the men. Chace Crawford and Ed Westwick portrayed Nate Archibald and Chuck Bass respectively, in the teen drama Gossip Girl. Chace and Ed quickly became the best of friends after meeting on set. The off-screen friendship mirrored the onscreen relationship between Nate and Chuck. In fact, they even lived together in New York during the series and were often seen around the city. After the series concluded, they have remained best of friends. They’re even close with each other’s families. In an interview with The Talk, Chace mentioned that his friends threw him an epic 30th birthday bash. Ed gave a speech where he ended up embarrassing himself but made up for it by dancing with Chace’s grandmother for 10 minutes. Both Ed and Chace have remained close and great friends after all these years.

Leonardo DiCaprio And Claire Danes (Hate)

Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is one of the greatest love stories ever told. The story has been told in various different media, including stage plays, radio, and films. One of the most famous versions is Romeo + Juliet starring Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio. Baz Luhrmann directed the movie, which was released on November 1, 1996. On screen, the love was intense and deep between the two co-stars; but off-screen, there was very little love. At the time, just about every woman was chasing after the 21-year-old Leo. Well, everyone except for 17-year-old Claire Danes. Apparently, Claire did her best to avoid Leo behind the scenes because she found him to be a little “too immature.” On the other hand, Leo felt that Claire was a little “too uptight.” They might not have liked each other off-screen but onscreen, the chemistry was off-the-charts.

Ashley Benson And Shay Mitchell (BFFs)

Pretty Little Liars first premiered in 2010 and is now in its final season. It stars Troian Bellisario, Lucy Hale, Shay Mitchell, and Ashley Benson. The series revolves around five friends whose relationship falls apart after one of them goes missing. However, in real life, the cast is known for actually getting along well. In fact, two of the stars, Ashley and Shay, have quite the womance. They have quickly become inseparable BFFs that pretty much do everything together. They even have their own super couple BFF names, ButtahBenzo and Shayley. Ashley has even put in a great deal of effort to find her bestie a boyfriend. The BFFs are all over Instagram posting pics of them. They’ve gone on vacations together to places like Hawaii and Disney World. All eyes were on them when they strutted their stuff at Coachella. It appears that nothing can come between these two best friends.

Shia LaBeouf And Tom Hardy (Hate)

In the past several years, Shia LaBeouf has made some questionable choices. He’s created some controversy with his erratic behavior. However, his most questionable choice had to be the time when he got into a fight with Tom Hardy. Shia and Tom co-starred in the 2012 film Lawless, which also starred Gary Oldman, Jessica Chastain, and Jason Clarke. After the filming completed, rumors swirled that Shia and Hardy got into a fight on set and that Shia knocked Hardy out. Tom even confirmed this but seemed to be joking. Eventually, director John Hillcoat confirmed the rumors of a fight but denies Shia knocking out Hardy. Hillcoat said about the fight, “There was definitely a fight between them. It escalated to the point where they had to both be restrained. But I was very pleased to hear it didn’t go that way because I would hate to see the outcome.”

Robert Pattinson And Reese Witherspoon (BFFS)

During times of heartbreak, it’s often best to turn to friends. It’s always the most loyal and true best friends that are there for each other during those times. That’s how Robert Pattinson knows that Reese Witherspoon is a true friend. Reese and Robert became BFFs after playing lovers in the 2011 film Water For Elephants. They became such good friends during filming that Reese actually felt awkward having to kiss him. In 2012, Robert split from his then girlfriend and Twilight co-star Kristen Stewart. It was revealed that she had been cheating on him with director Rupert Sanders. Robert moved out of the home he shared with Stewart and Reese offered Robert to stay with her and her husband. Reese was there for Robert during that time of his very public heartbreak. Reese praised her BFF and said, “He’s professional, hard-working, so appreciative, more grateful than I’ve ever seen anyone for where he is in life.”

Brad Pitt And George Clooney (BFFs)

Brad Pitt and George Clooney’s bromance has flourished and faced its fair share of obstacles. They basically had a will-they-won’t-they bromance, and at one time, it seemed like it was over. Brad and George first became BFFs after meeting on the set of Ocean’s Eleven. The onscreen chemistry between Danny Ocean (Clooney) and Rusty Ryan (Pitt) resulted in a real-life friendship. Brad and George teamed up with Matt Damon and Don Cheadle to found Not On Our Watch Project, which is an international relief and humanitarian organization. However, when Clooney married Amal Alamuddin, his friendship with Pitt fell apart. Rumors suggest that Pitt’s then wife, Angelina Jolie, was jealous of Amal’s success. She forbade Pitt from being Clooney’s friend and even prevented him from attending George and Amal’s wedding. However, since Pitt’s divorce from Angelina, the bromace has been rekindled. One can only assume that Brad and George ran to each other in slow motion along a beach.

Shannen Doherty And Jennie Garth/ Shannen Doherty And Alyssa Milano (Hate)

It appears that wherever Shannen Doherty went, she had issues with her co-stars. Doherty first rose to fame as Brenda Walsh on Beverly Hills, 90210. During that time, it was well known that Doherty didn’t get along with her fellow cast members; Jennie Garth in particular. Doherty and Garth played best friends in the series, but off-screen, they were anything but best friends. In fact, rumors suggest that they wanted to “claw each other’s eyes out.” Doherty eventually left the series to pursue other ventures. In later years, Doherty and Garth were able to put their differences aside and became friendly.

However, Shannen moved on only to have another feud with a co-star. This time, it was on the supernatural series Charmed. Doherty portrayed Prue Halliwell. Co-star Alyssa Milano portrayed her onscreen sister, Phoebe. However, off-screen, they were nothing like sisters. In fact, they pretty much hated each other to the point that one of them had to go. Doherty left the series during the third season.

Tina Fey And Amy Poehler (BFFs)

Tiny Fey and Amy Poehler first met at the ImprovOlympic in Chicago after being introduced by the theater’s co-founder. It was on that wonderful day that the greatest womance in history was born. They went on to perform improv together at the ImprovOlympic for several years. In 1997, Fey joined the cast of the sketch comedy Saturday Night Live. For years, Tina had asked Amy to join her but Poehler had other commitments. In 2001, Amy finally joined her bestie in the cast of SNL. Their friendship and chemistry resulted in them becoming the first all-female anchors for SNL Weekend Update. Later, they starred in the films Baby Mama and Sisters. They both went on to have incredibly successful careers but have always found time for each other. Later, they co-hosted the Golden Globe Awards on three separate occasions to rave reviews. They continue to work together while maintaining an awesome friendship.

Patrick Swayze And Jennifer Grey (Hate)

“Nobody puts Baby in the corner!” Well, unless you’re Patrick Swayze and Baby can’t stop laughing during scenes. The critically and commercially acclaimed film, Dirty Dancing, was released on August 21, 1987. It starred Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey as Johnny Castle and Frances “Baby” Houseman, respectively. Dirty Dancing is considered the ultimate love story. However, behind the scenes, it was the farthest thing from love. Despite having perfect onscreen chemistry, Patrick and Jennifer didn’t get along off-screen. In his autobiography, Swayze noted that he was frustrated with her “silly moods” and that she was extremely sensitive to criticism. Jennifer also had difficulty keeping it together during shooting and often broke into laughter. One example of Jennifer laughing actually made it into the film. During the teaching montage, Swayze gently caresses Jennifer’s arm and she begins laughing. This greatly agitated the perfectionist Swayze, which is evident by the real look of annoyance on his face.

Vanessa Hudgens And Ashley Tisdale (BFFs)

High School Musical revolved around captain of the basketball team, Troy Bolton (Zac Efron), and shy transfer student, Gabriella Montez (Vanessa Hudgens), auditioning for their school musical. However, diva Sharpay Evans (Ashley Tisdale) will do whatever it takes to break Troy and Gabriella up. Vanessa and Ashley may have played enemies onscreen, but off-screen, they have the ultimate womance. Vanessa and Ashley became friends while shooting the film. High School Musical was released in 2005 and roughly 11 years later, these two are closer than ever. They do everything together, including going on vacations, taking a plethora of selfies, and singing together. They helped each other get through difficult breakups and heartbreak. In fact, Vanessa served as Ashley’s bridesmaid at her wedding. Vanessa said about the friendship, “She’s one of those girlfriends who will be my friend forever.”

Ryan Gosling And Rachel McAdams (Hate)

In 2004, Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams captured the hearts of audiences all over the world with their heartbreaking performance in The Notebook. Ryan and Rachel instantly became the most adorable and perfect onscreen couple. However, off-screen, they actually hated each other. Nick Cassavetes directed The Notebook, and it was released on June 25, 2004. According to Cassavetes, Gosling had difficulties working with McAdams behind the scenes. In fact, he often requested someone else to read lines with him off-screen instead of Rachel. Eventually, Rachel and Ryan were locked in a room with only a producer. They proceeded to scream and yell at each other for quite a long time. Once they exited the room, the tension was defused and the situation was somewhat better; but there were still some tensions from time to time. Things must have gotten much better because eventually, Ryan and Rachel started dating in real life once.

Lea Michele And Naya Rivera (Hate)

On the set of the hit musical series, Glee, there wasn’t very much “glee” between two of the co-stars. Lea Michele played main character Rachel Berry and Naya Rivera portrayed Santana Lopez. Behind the scenes, Lea and Naya initially got along very well but the honeymoon phase of their friendship was over pretty fast. Rachel was always the star of the series but Santana started off as a minor character. As the series progressed, her role became larger and became one of the breakout stars. According to Naya, this didn’t sit well with Lea who didn’t enjoy sharing the spotlight. Eventually, Naya and other cast members were fed up with Lea’s attitude. Naya complained to the producers, which resulted in Naya and Lea no longer speaking to each other. Naya does feel that the feud was overblown and said, “I doubt we’ll ever sit on her couch and eat kale together again, but the rumors of our ‘feud’ were blown out of proportion.”

Seth Rogen And James Franco (BFFs)

The cult classic Freaks and Geeks aired for one season from 1999 to 2000. It was the launching pad for some of the most successful celebrities in Hollywood. More importantly, is was the birthplace of the greatest bromance of all time. Seth Rogen and James Franco met on the set of Freaks and Geeks. They played two stoner best friends—Daniel Desario (Franco) and Ken Miller (Rogen). In a case of life imitating art, Rogen and Franco blossomed from co-stars to stoner BFFs. During Freaks and Geeks, Rogen and Franco often hung out in Jason Segel’s basement smoking pot. Rogen and Franco have starred in several memorable films together, including Pineapple Express, This is the End, and The Interview. The Interview caused controversy due to its depiction of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and was pulled from theaters. During his difficult time, Rogen texted Franco, “I’m glad it’s you I’m going through this with.”

Nicki Minaj And Mariah Carey (Hate)

R&B legend, Mariah Carey, and future Hip-hop icon, Nicki Minaj, have a lot in common. They have endless passion for their music, are incredibly gorgeous, and have a deep hatred for each other. It all started during season 12 of the reality competition series American Idol. Both Mariah and Nicki served as judges that season, and it was evident from the start that there was a tension between the two. People magazine reported that Mariah was taking little “jabs” at Nicki but Minaj just ignored it. According to People, “Mariah doesn’t think Nicki can sing and doesn’t think she should be judging folks.” Eventually, Nicki couldn’t take it any more and went on a tirade at Mariah, which was released by TMZ. Mariah claimed that Nicki said, “If I had a gun I’d shoot that f*****g b***h.” However, both Nicki and an Idol producer deny that she said that. Some believe the fight was all just a publicity stunt while others are relieved that the fight never escalated.

Jennifer Aniston And Courteney Cox (BFFs)

Rachel Green and Monica Geller were two best friends who lived together in New York. The friendship was so real and strong that in transferred to real life. After meeting on the set of Friends in 1994, Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox quickly became real-life best friends. After all these years, they’ve remained BFFs. Courteney and Jennifer have supported each other during difficult times. During her divorce from David Arquette, Courtney cited Aniston for helping her get through that time. In 2014, Aniston revealed that she stayed in Courteney’s guest bedroom. Aniston said about that time, “Without giving away too much of my private stuff, all I can say is she’s been there for me through thick and thin.” In 2015, Courteney served as Aniston’s bridesmaid when she married Justin Theroux. Aniston made guest appearances on Dirt and Cougar Town, which both starred Courteney. Courteney once said, “We just have fun, we laugh, we’re inseparable and it’s great.”
