There are several things that a woman can do to alter her appearance. One of the most significant as you may find throughout this list is to apply some makeup. For 10 of our actresses, when they take off the makeup you may be shocked at the end result. And not in a good way!

It's hard to blame them as the paparazzi follow you everywhere when you're a celebrity, but that doesn't make the photos we've tracked down any less appealing. For the other 10 women on our list, it becomes abundantly clear that they can look gorgeous even without applying any product to their face.

We have some of the biggest celebrities of all-time including an actress from Game of Thrones, the Marvel franchise and not one but two actresses from Modern Family. There are even some former Disney girls that made our cut. To top it all off, we even have a quote from an actress on Friends who revealed in an interview that a guest star only thought she looked good enough to sleep with after she had her makeup done.

For every woman on our list, we've included photos of them both with and without makeup in order to highlight the differences.

Here are the 10 women that really need makeup (and the 10 that don't).

Doesn't Need Makeup - Julie Bowen

One of the most important things that you can do on a regular basis is exercise. This may play an even bigger role in your life if you're a celebrity and your image is a huge part of your career.

Especially if you're on one of the most successful television series of all-time, and will be for at least the next few years. It's clear that Julie Bowen, who is tremendous on Modern Family understands all of these points.

It'd be absolutely ridiculous to apply a ton of makeup prior to going on a jog, so kudos to Bowen for not only being practical but also looking gorgeous while doing so!

Bowen will be part of a primarily main female cast for the 2018 film Life of the Party that also stars Gillian Jacobs and Melissa McCarthy.

Needs Makeup - Keira Knightley

It's absolutely impossible to look good if you have a photo being taken of you at that particular angle, but it exists nevertheless and for that, we can't let Keira Knightley off the hook. It's especially fun to think about how much makeup she rocks out in during the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise where clearly the water doesn't wash it away!

Knightley looks beautiful whether on the screen or in a photoshoot, which perhaps helps give further insight to her quote from a past interview when she said

"I don't have a signature look.I feel good when I feel strong, sophisticated and feminine."

We're sure she feels that way in the photo on the right, but we wouldn't blame her if she wanted to burn the photo on the left.

Doesn't Need Makeup - Emilia Clarke

Emilia Clarke is sure to be the television crush of many men for her hairstyles and outfits (or lack thereof) on the series Game of Thrones, but it's clear that Clarke also looks gorgeous when she is stepping away from Westeros.

She elected to share the above photo on social media back in 2013, and while Clarke did not elect to speak out about how she feels without wearing confident; it's clear that she has every reason to be feeling amazing.

While we're sure we'll miss seeing her on Game of Thrones when her time wraps up, we can only hope that she remains active on social media and lands plenty of future roles.

Needs Makeup - Katy Perry

When it comes to the photo of Katy Perry without makeup, you may perhaps need to have a little bit of sympathy for her. The photo was clearly taken very shortly after she was awoken and you can imagine she was quite startled.

Especially when she found out that her then-husband Russell Brand had uploaded the photo online! It was shortly taken down, but the damage had been done. The two got later divorced after a very short-lived marriage.

While this may not have been the most flattering shot for Perry, there are several other opportunities in Perry's life where she looks like the most beautiful woman in the entire world.

Doesn't Need Makeup - Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato has done plenty of photo shoots in the past that may leave you with your jaw on the floor, but the sexiest of all may be when she elected to pose in her birthday suit for Vanity Fair. Following the "naked theme" the photo shoot included no retouching or alteration of the photos and featured Lovato without makeup. While we don't have the photos for you above, we did include a great selfie that Lovato took.

Lovato has struggled with body confidence issues in the past but opened up about what it means to be confident,

"One thing, in particular, is feeling comfortable in your own skin. Something incredible about the idea of no makeup whatsoever, no clothes and no retouching…It’s empowering".

Needs Makeup - Khloe Kardashian

There isn't a more photographed family in America than the Kardashians. So you better believe that when Khloe left the house without makeup and looking less than her best, that the paparazzi was going to be all over that. The photo is far from flattering, but if we're giving Khloe some credit the photo isn't recent.

What is recent, however, was Khloe's weight loss and dedication to improving her overall health,

"Eating healthy isn't always easy, boo! I'm the first to admit that changing your diet is hard AF. I feel so much better when I eat right though so it's definitely worth it! My biggest tip for starting off strong is to swap out some common foods you eat for healthier versions," said Khloe when talking about her diet.

Doesn't Need Makeup - Vanessa Hudgens

Vanessa Hudgens is one of the most dedicated celebrities in Hollywood when it comes to fitness. Along with making sure she is attending the gym on a regular basis, Hudgens adds some variety to her exercise routine with some yoga, pilates and spinning classes.

It definitely looks like she may have been coming from a workout in the photo on the left. Which if that is the case, absolutely helps explain the reason for the lack of makeup (not that there needs to be a reason!).

Hudgens captures the eyes of everyone whenever she attends red carpet events while wearing makeup, but that body that she shows off clearly comes with a lot of work.

Needs Makeup - Sofia Vergara

Sofia Vergara looks absolutely stunning whenever she attends a red carpet event or on our television screens through the show Modern Family. But you can imagine that being an actor leads to many early mornings, which may make having a coffee an absolute necessity.

It's clear from the above photo that Sofia followed a very similar line of thinking as she's seen with the cup in hand. We're sure she had more things on her mind than the fact that the paparazzi would be waiting to take a picture of her.

And while it's not clear if she was on her way to work or not, you have to admit it'd be pretty silly to get all dolled up with makeup only to then go see your makeup artist.

Nevertheless, it's still not the most flattering shot of Vergara.

Doesn't Need Makeup - Mila Kunis

There are several men out there that are incredibly jealous of Ashton Kutcher. Not only is he a successful actor, but he's even married (and has a family) with Mila Kunis. Just think how fun That '70s Show will be to show to their kids? You know, provided they have a healthy conversation on drug use!

Kunis is also no stranger to not wearing makeup, admitting in an interview to Glamour that she doesn't wear it on a regular basis. Kunis, who posed without makeup for the magazine went on to say

"I commend women who wake up 30, 40 minutes early to put on eyeliner. I think it’s beautiful. I’m just not that person.”

Needs Makeup - Snooki

Now when it comes to the above photo, we don't know if you can qualify Snooki as looking bad as much as you can just talk about how unbelievably shocking she looks! Who knew that she would literally look like a different skin tone when she washes away the makeup and spray tan. The vast difference is enough to land Snooki on the negative side of the list if only because it helps reaffirm her poor sense of judgment in how over the top she looks when out and partying. At the very least, it's clear she needs to use makeup if she's ever going to keep trying to remain famous.

Snooki admitted in a past interview that she loves using self-tanner at home,

"I just heard about Sunlove not too long ago and then I tried it out. It doesn't leave your face greasy, and there's no bad smell to it like other spray tans. I never used spray tanners until this one because I usually just went tanning. But you know after the taxing, you don't want to deal with that, and friggin' cancer—so this is a great product to replace all the bad stuff of tanning."

Talk about a first world problem!

Doesn't Need Makeup - Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian may be one of the biggest celebrities that you associate with wearing makeup. In fact, she opened up about her love of putting on other products, but also what Kanye's preference is in a past interview

“My husband loves me without makeup so… I would wear makeup 24/7 if I could, but he likes me without it.”

We're sure when you factor in that they have several young children together, that Kim especially appreciates knowing that Kanye finds her gorgeous even first thing in the morning. Especially because we're sure there for Kim there are plenty of days where she wants to draw the blinds, shut out the world and relax with her family.

Needs Makeup - Lisa Kudrow

Friends is one of my favorite sitcoms of all-time, though if I'm being honest, I'm not the hugest fan of Phoebe. But to be fair, we're also sure that Kudrow is not a fan of the photo on the left which was captured by the paparazzi.

The photo was taken back in 2014 during an unusually rainy day in Los Angeles. In a past interview, Kudrow also revealed a crude comment that a guest star made to her during her time on Friends

"I rehearsed without makeup most of the week and then on show night I’m in hair and makeup and I was told, 'Oh wow, now you’re” – can I say it? “Now you’re f--------,'"

She did not reveal who the guest star in question.

Doesn't Need Makeup - Scarlett Johansson

Scarlett Johansson is going to always be wearing some form of makeup with her role in Avengers, but that definitely isn't a requirement to make sure she looks gorgeous. Johansson posted the above photo to social media, clearly showing she is confident in her appearance.

Johansson also had words of wisdom,

"The way you are so that even if you are without makeup, you can look into the mirror and with a big smile embrace your imperfections. Just imagine if you don’t even love yourself how do you expect anyone to love you."

We hope many women can take those words to heart.

Needs Makeup - Goldie Hawn

Now 71 years old, Goldie Hawn is the oldest woman on our list. She has paved an outstanding career that has spanned decades, not to mention being the mother of acclaimed actress Kate Hudson.

Hawn took her shot back up on the big screen this past year with Snatched. While the movie failed to live up to the expectations, nobody can fault Hawn for her efforts.

Unfortunately for Hawn, she clearly didn't put any effort into applying makeup in the photo on the left. Hard to blame her when she's clearly just rocking a casual tank top, but paparazzi are always watching!

Doesn't Need Makeup - Hilary Duff

Hilary Duff is no stranger to the paparazzi following her every move, and quite often it's normally a great thing as she is honestly one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood. The above photographer on the left, however, definitely caught her off guard as she was wearing some glasses that we don't typically see on Duff.

The photo may be all the shocking in comparison to the absolutely drop dead gorgeous of Duff to the right to compare it to where she is clearly comfortable both rocking some makeup and showing off some skin. That being said, she still looks fantastic in the photo on the left and doesn't seem to need makeup to look good.

Duff is aging well, which is perhaps fitting because she's currently killing it on the television series called Younger.

Needs Makeup - Sharon Stone

Sharon Stone looks incredibly pissed off in both of the photos that we have for you above. The only difference is the photo on the left was clearly taken by a paparazzi member that was able to catch Stone in the middle of a passionate conversation. It's clear you don't want to get on her bad side!

The photo on the right is from the movie Total Recall where Stone is sure to leave you absolutely captivated. While you may not hear Stone's name as much as you may have during the 90s, she does have a role in the highly anticipated upcoming film The Disaster Artist that also stars Alison Brie and James Franco.

Doesn't Need Makeup - Alicia Keys

Alicia Keys is no stranger to having anxiety about going out in public and being afraid of how people are going to judge her; especially if she wasn't wearing makeup

“What if someone wanted a picture? What if they POSTED it [online]?. These were the insecure, superficial, but honest thoughts I was thinking. And all of it, one way or another, was based too much on what other people thought of me," said Keys when talking about her perception on makeup.

Keys has however since changed her mindset and has had several different moments where she did actively make an effort to highlight that she is not wearing makeup.

Needs Makeup - Ellen DeGeneres

Now when it comes to Ellen DeGeneres, you have to admit that it helps her overall appearance that she appears on a television show on a regular basis. After all, that means she has a team of people always at the ready to help her look her best, but sadly the above photo appears to be taken on a day off for DeGeneres!

Despite the not so flattering photo above, many people still think Ellen is aging well and as a result, her makeup artist Pati Dubroff has opened up about the tricks she uses to stay young

"Ellen sticks to vegan fare and practices yoga, and it's written all over her face. Boosting your intake of antioxidant-rich fruits and veggies and cutting out processed foods helps give you that luminous look." Sounds like good advice to us!

Doesn't Need Makeup - Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift is famous for her catchy songs. Many of which seemed to be based on some of her past lovers. And while Swift has definitely dated around, the photo on the left makes it clear that she must be just as attractive first thing in the morning, as she does when she is dolled up for a night on the town.

The fact that the makeup free photo is taken from the angle of a paparazzi also makes it evident that Swift doesn't always care about putting on makeup prior to stepping out for some time on the town.

We're sure that whenever Swift finds herself single that it won't take her long before another person comes calling.

Needs Makeup - Uma Thurman

Uma Thurman was not having herself a great morning back in November 2014. The photo on the left was taken when she in Stockholm attending the International Film Festival. While Thurman looked great for the red carpet events, the photo was taken the following day when she was understandably tired. It didn't help that she allegedly told people the night before that she was starting to feel sick.

The photo on the right, however, helps make it clear why for a long time Thurman was considered one of the best looking actresses in Hollywood. Thurman has a busy schedule ahead of her with several films scheduled to come out in the near future.
