It is called the “idiot box” for a reason. There are TV shows that regularly come to your bedroom to leave you even dumber than you actually are. Make no mistake. These TV shows are addictive, just like other stupid addictions. There are lots of TV shows made every year. TV channels increase their budget for upcoming shows and provide content that simply makes no sense at all. Of course, there are some smart TV shows as well.
The world is clearly divided into two parts. One group of people watch intelligent TV shows that are intriguing and extremely smart at the same time. The other group of people do not want to use their brain while watching anything on television. They just want to switch it on and keep watching it until they ask you to switch it off. Just like everything else, even stupid TV shows have some advantages. There is a requirement for dumb entertainment in a world that continuously demands you to be on your toes. The TV shows on this list are stupid for different reasons. While we’re totally disgusted with the dumbness of some of these shows and its characters, we are big fans of some of the other shows on the list because we do not claim to be the smartest people on this planet. We too are in love with dumb fun at times.
15. Here Comes Honey Boo Boo
Here Comes Honey Boo Boo aired on TLC from 2012 to 2014. The reality TV show featured Alana Thompson, aka Honey Boo Boo, and her family. The child beauty pageant has an equally famous mother, Mama June. Honey Boo Boo and her family originally became famous with the TLC reality TV series Toddlers & Tiaras. Here Comes Honey Boo Boo is about Honey Boo Boo and her family’s adventures in McIntyre, Georgia. No matter how it sounds, there is nothing adventurous about this dumb show. This show justifiably received strongly negative reviews from TV critics for obvious reasons. Mama June was reportedly involved with a registered s*x offender and TLC immediately canceled the show after four seasons. While the fifth season of the show remained unaired because of the cancellation, the family later appeared on WE TV’s From Not To Hot, where then-obese Mama June underwent a dramatic weight loss regime.
14. Jersey Shore
Jersey Shore aired on MTV from 2009 to 2012. The show is about eight housemates who spend their summer at the Jersey Shore. In the second season, the cast moved to Miami Beach, Florida only to return to the Jersey Shore in the third season. The fourth season was shot in Italy, while the fifth returned to New Jersey. The show ended after the sixth season. This show was dumb for a different reason. It had a dumb portrayal of Italian-Americans and offered stupid stereotypes of the same. The makers used actors who were not of Italian descent. Therefore, they only managed to offer caricatures of the original characters. In 2010, New Jersey Governor, Chris Christie, slammed the show for being negative for the state. He criticized the show for trying to make America believe that their fake New Jersey was the real one. Jersey Shore never pretended to be wise, smart, nor clever. It was as dumb as it promised to be.
13. Two And A Half Men
Two And A Half Men aired on CBS from 2003 to 2015. Charlie Sheen, Jon Cryer, and Angus T. Jones were the two and a half men in the show, which was about a jingle writer, his brother, and his brother’s son. During the show, Sheen had his deal terminated as he made offensive comments about the makers, while he entered drug rehab. While critics gave mixed reviews for the show, some of them found it offensive for its misogynistic humor. Feminists do not like the show much, just like they do not have a lot of love for Sheen either. It is known for being deeply sexist since Season 1. According to some, Two And A Half Men is the worst TV show ever made and people were happy when it ended. Besides being misogynistic, the jokes on the show were pretty dumb as well. However, the show was also insanely popular, which tells us a lot about the people who love to watch it.
12. South Park
South Park, an adult animated sitcom, had 20 seasons on the Comedy Central television network. The four boys of the show, Stan Marsh, Kyle Broflovski, Eric Cartman, and Kenny McCormick, have their weird adventures throughout the show. South Park is infamous for having insanely dark humor with a lot of profanity. The show is meant for mature audience, but it ended up being dumb anyway. During the Season 5 premiere, the word ‘sh*t’ was said 162 times and it did not get censored. There was strong criticism about it, but it brought its standard down even further later on. During a Season 11 episode, there was a wide use of the word n*gger. In a dumb effort to force its opinion about almost everything in the world, the show criticized anything from Prophet Muhammad to Scientology. It even made fun of Tom Cruise’s s*xual orientation simply because of his advocacy for Scientology.
11. How I Met Your Mother
How I Met Your Mother is one of the longest-running TV shows of all time. The CBS sitcom aired from 2005 to 2014. The show is about Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) and his group of friends in Manhattan. The story, set in 2030, discusses how Ted met the mother of his kids. While the TV show had a lot of promise, the comedy in the show was not up to the mark. When the comedy on the show was good, there were deep inconsistencies in the show that made it really dumb. How I Met Your Mother, however, is one of the most popular TV shows of all time. But, think about this. It took nine seasons for Ted to tell his kids how he met their mother. What is ridiculously dumb is that Ted had 184 important moments before he met his wife and he is in his early 30’s.
10. Gossip Girl
Gossip Girl is based on Cecily von Ziegesar’s book series of the same name. The CW show ran for six seasons from 2007 to 2012. As dumb as the show’s name sounds, the TV show dealt with the lives of upper-class adolescents living in Manhattan. Here are some stupid things that happened in almost every episode of the show; Kristen Bell kept on narrating throughout the show, which started sounding ridiculous after some time. Chuck Bass kept on introducing himself by saying “I’m Chuck Bass.” For some reason, he thought everybody should know his name. In addition, almost every character of the show wears stupid clothes all the time. Serena continues to complain about her life even though she is highly blessed with so many things. The dumb show is also about snobs who hate each other. The “classism” shown in Gossip Girl was a stereotype that should have been avoided.
9. Big Brother
Big Brother is probably the most popular reality game show franchise all over the world. Until 2016, there have been more than 54 franchise countries that aired 387 seasons overall. The concept of the show feeds on people’s eternal desire to spy on other people. The pleasure of voyeurism is the basis of the show. The housemates are asked to live their “normal” life, while they are monitored live through TV cameras. And, there starts the stupidity of the show. Viewers are asked to leave their usual life to manage some time to watch people brushing their teeth and cleaning the toilet. Nevertheless, these guests on the show are paid for doing so. The show is often accused of being scripted. The guests are apparently asked to have affairs during the show to make it more interesting. The raunchy quotient of the show gets higher with some non-English versions where people were caught having s*x on live TV. Yes, they knew they were live on TV. Nevertheless, they still did it. Are you not clever enough to know the trick here?
8. The Bachelor
Here’s another stupid TV show that comes with an insane concept about a bevy of girls trying their best to impress one eligible bachelor. The dating game show started in 2002 and remains one of the most popular TV shows. The show has a number of spin-offs like Bachelor in Paradise, Bachelor Pad, and The Bachelorette. All of those are equally stupid, for sure. Feminists have often complained about the concept of the show, which seems quite feudal in its attitude. The show is also a legit way that the bachelor can have s*x with the participants without having any commitment towards them. He invites women to his fantasy suite and they spend a night together. No camera is present over there, so that things could take their usual course. While the last bachelor, Nick Viall, is still engaged with the woman he chose, Vanessa Grimaldi, the show is notorious for having a terrible after-show record for couples.
7. Criminal Minds
Criminal Minds started in 2005. The CBS crime procedural drama is still going on. It had the Season 12 finale earlier in May. While the show is extremely popular, this is no way similar to the actual crime procedural activities in real life. While this TV show was supposed to be meant for intelligent viewers, there are so many absurdities in it that it is unwatchable for smart people. It has super-qualified characters. For example, it has FBI profiling agent, Spencer Reid, who has three PhDs, a reading speed of 20,000 per minute, and an IQ of 187. You’ll also see the bureau sending out its elite profiling team to arrest dangerous suspects. It is like sending Donald Trump to catch ISIS terrorists in Syria. It is not only unlikely, but also ridiculous to the level of being unfunny. The serious faces of the TV show do not necessarily make it a serious show. It remains a dumb crime drama, which has nothing to do with real-life crime and investigation.
6. Dr. Ken
Dr. Ken started on ABC in 2015 and thankfully ended with its second season in March 2017. Ken Jeong, a Korean-American doctor-turned-stand-up comedian, created the show based on his real-life experience. The show had extremely negative reviews, and there were enough reasons for it. The show, which was actually intended to be humorous, had nothing that could be called funny. We have seen South Asian gags and some of those are really funny. However, this show is just stupid and not funny. While Dr. Ken, as an actor, brings a lot of energy to the show, the writing is so weak that it only makes him look like a dumb representation. It once had a joke about rectal exams, and everything else after that went down in terms of standards. Despite all this, some of the viewers found this funny.
5. The Big Bang Theory
This is one of the surprise entries in the list. This insanely popular show is actually meant to inspire intelligent people. The humor in the show is supposed to tease genius minds. If Albert Einstein was alive, he would have loved it, right? NAY! According to many, this is one of the worst shows ever created. The Big Bang Theory is a stupid show because it considers its viewers as stupid. If you like the show, you probably are stupid. The actors in the show pause for the recorded laughter. At times, they laugh at their own jokes. It has so many repeated jokes in the show as well. Mostly, it’s like Sheldon preferring one type of chair…and so on. The show has so many stereotypes. Penny comes off as a dumb woman. Raj comes off as a typical Indian. Howard is a standard Jewish stereotype. The show even tries to make r*pe and s*xual abuse appear to be funny. Seriously?
4. Keeping Up With The Kardashians
In the list of dumb TV shows, Keeping Up with the Kardashians is surely a champion entry. After all, the Kardashian-Jenner family has mastered the art of being stupid. Their self-obsessed life has been a matter of public entertainment since 2007, when the show debuted on E! cable network. People love this show, which has now become one of the longest-running reality television series in the United States. Season 13 of the show premiered in March 2017. It seems like America loves to see desperate women climbing to the margins of fame. While we are unsure if they consider it a horror show, we definitely find the Kardashian-Jenner family creepy enough. The show is nothing but self-absorbed egocentrism by Kim Kardashian, her sisters, and their family. This is one of the dumbest TV shows ever made, and everyone who loves the show deserves to be on the show to extend the stupidity. But, if you love it for fake boobs, we totally understand.
3. 13 Reasons Why
Here’s one TV show that is here in the list for a completely different reason. There is no denying the fact that 13 Reasons Why is one of the most powerful TV shows in recent times. It has been made with a different perspective toward teenage life and its problems. However, the stupidity of the show lies somewhere else. The show is about a teenage girl who blames a number of people for her suicide. The people responsible comes to know about it in a thriller-like style. While the show deals with serious issues like rape, abuse, and suicide, it is far from being realistic. If psychology has to be believed, nobody else should be blamed for one’s suicide except the person who is committing it. The show sends a completely misguided message to its viewers. Many of them actually believed in what the show wanted to promote, which is a dangerous thing. It also shows a graphic depiction of suicide, which psychologists believe can negatively impact those who are already suicidal.
Touted as a “show about nothing,” Seinfeld has charmed generations. The show follows the life of Jerry Seinfeld and his friends and neighbors. The show ended up being the most popular show of all time, and it made Jerry Seinfeld one of the richest people on earth. There are millions of people who love this show because it surely had many funny moments. However, the show is also stupid for various reasons. First of all, Jerry Seinfeld is incapable of acting. His acting is so dumb that he is often seen laughing even before he hears the joke. This was another ‘90s show with terrible costumes. However, one of the biggest reasons for Seinfeld being silly is that the show often spent the entire episode for thirty seconds of a punchline. Many a time, the punchline was dumb enough to forget immediately. The funniest character in the show, Kramer, is basically a stupid guy. People fell in love with his stupidity anyway.
The final entry on this list is the father of brainless entertainment. There is no TV show ever made that can surpass Friends in terms of being funny for no reason at all. Either you love it or you don’t. The story is basically about six friends who spend hours either at a café or in an apartment. Their career just does not matter. They somehow manage to get together and have fun. Make no mistake. There are so many gay jokes in the show, which seem really odd now. If you think closely, the characters of the show are terrible. All of them are a pain in the a*s. Monica is irritating for being neat, Ross for being whiny, Chandler for having a negative mind, Rachel for being a spoiled brat, Joey for being a sl*t, and Phoebe for being weirdly creepy. There could have been a horror show with the same characters. The show made fun of overweight people, and Phoebe manages to have her own apartment even though she never has a stable job. If you still love the show, we don’t blame you. We LOVE this show as well.
