Katy Perry is one of those stars who you have to have an acquired taste for, that’s for sure. There's really no in between when it comes to Perry. Either you love her or you hate her. As for me, despite what you’ll read below, I love Katy Perry. I just think she is extremely annoying at times. Who isn’t? But it's just something about Perry that makes her seem a bit self-serving at times. Like she does things that will benefit her even if she portrayed the exact opposite previously. She took a break for a while and I had hope that she would return as the Katy Perry I and millions of others fell in love with. Even before her hiatus she still had her moments that made you go “hmm… what?!” and “girl, bye.” But now she seems like a completely different person.

It's not clear if she is just on a rebellious streak or if this is how she really is. Her level of annoyance has just increased within the last year. That could be why many people didn't really jump at the idea of her being on the team for Fox’s reboot of American Idol. But the interesting thing is that she came back with a vengeance. And it seems like she's just going on the biggest promotional tour of her career — whether she’s on a stage or nah. So let's take a look at 15 times Katy Perry was super annoying (at least more than usual).

She Sneak Dissed Britney Spears … Twice

Katy Perry went from paying homage to Britney Spears a few years ago with her all-denim outfit (that in itself was pretty annoying) to dissing her, not once, but twice during her big comeback at the Grammy Awards this past February. It had been about three years since she released her latest project and it seemed like she was going toward an inspirational route with her newest single. But instead of confirming that, she decided to take a couple of jabs at Spears during her interviews. She opened up about her new platinum blonde hair color and said, “It’s the last color on the spectrum that I can do, I’ve done all of them and the only thing left to do is shave my head which I’m really saving for a public breakdown.” Of course we remember when Spears shaved her head during her high profile breakdown. But Perry also told Ryan Seacrest that she took a break to “take care” of her “mental health” and added that it went, “Fantastic, and I haven’t shaved my head yet.” Not cute, Katy. Not cute.

…But Then She Cut Her Own Hair

So what’s interesting is that Katy Perry seemed to make it a point that she wouldn’t shave her head unless she went through a public breakdown, right? But then just months later, she debuted a very short pixie cut of her own. Interestingly enough, karma might have come back around for her because she didn’t cut her hair by choice. During an appearance on Ellen, she told host Ellen DeGeneres that her hair started falling out shortly after she took the platinum blonde route. So she had to cut it off. It looks like she’s at least taking it all in strides. She marked one of the benefits that it brings more attention to your face. I would be really petty if I used the Mean Girls line, “So you agree, you think you’re pretty.” But I must admit that she at least does have a face to rock a short cut — even though the timing is pretty ironic.

"Chained to the Rhythm" Fiasco

Most fans who actually noticed that Katy Perry took a leave of absence from the music scene were probably waiting for her to come back sooner than later. But I have to say her big, highly anticipated return was a bit underwhelming. In fact, it seems like ever since she made her big comeback in February, she’s just been ruffling feathers. That includes her new song, “Chained to the Rhythm,” which might not have been as big of a hit as she and her team thought it would be. It’s not the fact that the song is politically charged — there are actually dozens of artists who are using their platform to speak out about the current state of our nation — it’s just the angle that she took and the general sound of it all. The song is about an authoritarian society and basically tells American citizens that we are prisons in our own country. The lyric video doesn’t help as it shows a very small home with huge hands making a meal.

Then There Are Those Racist Accusations

Despite her apparent attempt to speak out on behalf of her fellow American citizens and hope that we all stay “woke,” Katy Perry herself has been accused of being racist within recent weeks, and in fact, people have accused her of racism as well as cultural appropriation in the past.

Now, I’m not one to assume that someone feels a way toward any ethnic group without them actually coming out and saying it. But despite her dislike for Donald Trump, she got lots of attention for making a seemingly racist statement and tossed in President Barack Obama. When she debuted her new hair color, one fan told her, “I miss your old black hair,” and her response was, “Oh really? Do you miss Barack Obama as well? Oh, OK. Times change. Bye. See you guys later.” It’s just something about her having tons to say from an activist point of view then bringing Obama into it. Not that one has to love Trump to hate Obama, but how can you diss the new times (AKA new President) then remind fans that “times change”? Or are we looking too much into this?

Katy Perry vs. Taylor Swift

I don’t think I would trust Katy Perry or Taylor Swift as my BFF as far as I could throw them (even though they’re both pretty tiny). So it wasn’t a surprise that their friendship turned sour sooner or later. But Katy, just let it go. You’re too grown and mature to be going back-and-forth with someone who is still considered a teenie bopper.

So what caused this rift to begin with? It was all good for them up until 2012 when Perry started dating Swift’s ex-boyfriend, John Mayer. That’s the first error — you’re breaking the girl code. Then Taylor Swift used a couple of Katy Perry’s dancers for her the tour of her Red album. Things got ugly when Perry needed them for her own performances and they went with her. Then of course there was the song "Bad Blood" that Taylor Swift allegedly released about Perry, who then possibly called Swift Regina George. I think it’s safe to say both of these women are mean girls. But you’ll see in the next point that Perry is the man stealer.

Is She Dating Calvin Harris?

Of course rumors have sparked that Katy Perry is dating one of Taylor Swift’s most recent ex-boyfriends, Calvin Harris. Those rumors speculate that Perry is going as far as “chasing him” to get back at her former friend. One insider told OK! Magazine, “[Katy and Calvin] genuinely have a lot in common. It’s icing on the cake for Katy that she can drop this bomb on Taylor. There’s only one goal for Katy now, and that’s for a romance with Calvin to go public.” Apparently the two had lots in common, like their disdain for Swift. Apparently “[Harris] was more than happy to vent. He poured his heart out and she goaded him on.” I would think Perry has enough going on in her life to stop worrying about what Swift is doing and who she used to do it with. But hey, this is just one of the many reasons Perry is considered annoying.

Her Instagram Breakdown

As much as Katy Perry threw shade at Britney Spears, some fans are concerned she could be heading down a road of having her own breakdown. One of the most recent moments came when Perry cried on Instagram Live about the lack of support for her song “Bon Appetit” featuring Migos. Interestingly enough, the singer was listening to "No Promises" by Cheat Codes feat. Demi Lovato when she had her intense moment. She said the radio wasn’t playing her own latest single yet before she cried. "It’s okay… I’m not upset,” she said. Of course radio play is a major deal with any artist — especially with the likes of Katy Perry who is used to topping the charts with anything she releases. Crying about it on Instagram just seems a bit melodramatic. Perry has stayed quiet about a possible breakdown but fans in the meantime have been going back-and-forth about it.

The "Controversial" Lady In Red

Katy Perry didn't really assist with shutting down rumors that she was racist when she wore a very controversial designer’s gown at this year’s MET Gala. Most fans might not know that Perry sits as a co-chair of the event, so of course she was going to show up and make a statement in more ways than one. But the dress red dress she chose was none other than one designed by John Galliano, who has been called out for his anti-semitic views. And it’s hard to say his perception is just hearsay because he actually yelled, “I love Hitler!” in a Paris bar once. This caused him to lose his job as the creative director for Christian Dior in 2011. Fans and the media went into an uproar claiming that her dress was “offensive,” “controversial,” “trouble” and just plain “ugly.” Oh Katy dear, what is going on with you?

I’m Over Her Public Love Life

Look, I love love just as much as the next girl. Maybe even a little bit more. But I’m so over Katy Perry and her whirlwind romances with high profile guys. Like, I wonder if she’s ever decided to just date someone normal to see how that works out because clearly moving on from Russell Brand to John Mayer to Orlando Bloom just isn’t a good track record. When it comes to Orlando Bloom, the two actually broke up after he was seen getting extremely close with another woman. Let’s just say a knee rub in public was involved. The two had reportedly called it quits shortly after. But of course she went off on Twitter and wrote, “How about a new way of thinking for 2017? U can still b friends & love ur former partners! No one’s a victim or a villain, get a life y’all!” It might be safe to say Bloom is able to lay low a little bit more than Perry.

Her Refusal to Show Too Much Girl Power

It almost seems inevitable that Katy Perry would show as much girl power as possible. But her views on feminism have been a little bit confusing. It’s like she doesn’t really know what she stands for in that area. She once said, “I am not a feminist, but I do believe in the strength of women.” So… My question is what does she actually think a feminist is? I really don’t think she knows. She said in one interview, two years after the first quote with Billboard, “A feminist? Uh, yeah, actually… I used to not really understand what that word meant, and now that I do, it just means that I love myself as a female and I also love men.” The reason it’s a big deal if whether Perry even knows what feminism is, is because she has anthems that are considered feminist like “Roar.” There’s gotta be a reason that Perry is refusing to identify with being known as a feminist.

She Went Out of Her Way To Diss Donald Trump

Of course “Chained to the Rhythm” is a song about politics and all that jazz. But Katy Perry was simply doing the most when she mocked President Donald Trump at her performance for the Brit Awards. It’s like, we get it, you don’t like the President. Join the millions of others. But how did that help the situation at all? It’s just one of those things that seem like a pointless joke. There were people on stage with her wearing suits and skeletons for heads. She also seemed to be mocking Theresa May, who is a British politician. Unfortunately though, it appeared that more people gave Perry the side eye than Trump. It’s not really clear what she hoped to do with that performance, and maybe she did actually accomplish it. Whatever it was, it still marks one of the moments that just made her a bit annoying. Sorry Katy.

Her Forgettable Grammy Performance

If I talk about the Brit Awards, I have to bring up Katy Perry’s performance for the Grammys this year. Fans were so excited about her return because it had been awhile since she hit the stage for any award show, let alone the Grammys. She used every chance she could at making subtle and very obvious hints of what she was trying to do. For starters, she wore rose colored glasses as she belted out the lyrics about America living in a bubble. But it really it seemed like she was hopping all over the place. She still received a standing ovation from her peers, even though it just seemed really annoying. I get the message she was trying to convey and if I didn’t, her Twitter helped when she wrote, “You are the WE, don’t forget that,” referencing the “we the people” emblem that was portrayed at the end of the performance.

We’re Over Her Talking About Kissing Girls

“I Kissed a Girl” was Katy Perry’s first hit almost ten years ago. But now, it just seems dated. You kissed a girl. You liked it. Please remind us what the big deal is again? Still, now is the time it happens to come out that the song was about Miley Cyrus. If you have considered the timeline, this is when Cyrus was more famous as Hannah Montana the Disney star. Still, Cyrus said recently, “When she came out with, ‘I Kissed a Girl,’ I was doing the ‘Hannah Montana’ movie, and I heard her on the radio, they said, ‘Who’d you write that about?’ And she said me.” Even if that wasn’t true, that would be super awkward that Perry would even say that because at the time Cyrus was only 15. There is more than one thing wrong with this picture. When Perry actually talked about it with Howard Stern, she wouldn’t reveal who the song was about.

When She Channeled Janet Jackson

So Katy Perry won’t admit she’s a feminist, but it was still super awkward when she came out to Janet Jackson’s song “Nasty” at a campaign event for Hillary Clinton in Philadelphia before the election. She rocked a long blue dress with the words, “I’m with Madam President.” Word is she chose to use Jackson’s hit after Donald Trump called Clinton a “nasty woman.” Okay, girl. But Perry took her level of annoyance even further when she called Clinton “Hilly C.” Come again? She said, “I admire so many things about Hilly C. I agree with so many of her informed, educated policies… And no matter who you are or where you come from, she will be a President for all of us.” Hilly C… Alrighty then. It’s hard to take anyone who uses that reference seriously. Especially at an event such as one supporting the next possible Leader of the Free World.

Is Paris Hilton Her New BFF?

I don’t know why but Katy Perry’s possible friendship with Paris Hilton is really annoying. Thanks to social media we not only know that Perry hung out with the socialite at one of her house party’s recently, but also had a complete fan out moment as she used SnapChat to document her entire time there. She went to Hilton’s very iconic dog palace and even titled Hilton as, “The realest queen in the game.” The phrase, “Who died and made her queen?” would be so fitting here. Of course Hilton was all for Perry’s snaps and even reposted many of them herself. It looks like she took a break from promoting her new album, possibly judging American Idol, and announcing a tour to hang out with Hilton. In case you're wondering, Iggy Azalea, Sofia Richie, and Bella Thorne were also in the place. Party over here, party over there.
