Angelina Jolie, one of the hottest stars in the world, had gone for the hairless look for her 1998 movie, Gia. Her performance in the movie was widely praised and she won a Golden Globe for her role. One reviewer praised her performance and said, “Jolie gives it her all in a thoroughly uninhibited and highly effective portrait of a woman living from thrill to thrill.” Vanessa Vance claimed, “Jolie gained wide recognition for her role as the titular Gia, and it’s easy to see why. Jolie is fierce in her portrayal – filling the part with nerve, charm, and desperation – and her role in this film is quite possibly the most beautiful train wreck ever filmed.”

In this biographical movie, Angelina Jolie portrayed Gia Carangi, a 1980s supermodel, and depicted her tragic life and eventual death. Carangi had acquired a dangerous drug addiction, which is considered one of the major factors in the decline of her career. Her drug addiction also caused an HIV infection, which led to full-blown AIDS and her eventual death.

14. Mena Suvari

Yes, she did it! Incredible as it sounds, Mena Suvari, the hot cheerleader from American Beauty, decided to shave off her head. Mena later said that after she shaved off her head, many shocked women came up to her and talked about how they saw their hair as an essential part of their identity as a person. She added, “That was exciting to me, a psychological experiment. To me it’s just hair, it grows back. But people are going to look at it any way that they want to, and it’s sad that this industry and our society have gone to that level. It’s like all about how can we knock someone down. How can we tear someone apart?”

Mena also commented on being compared to other famous women who had shaved off their head. She described her feelings openly and stated, “The comparison is going to come up. It really sucks that people could look at me and the first thing they think is ‘Oh, Mena lost her mind.’

13. Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway let go of her long tresses for her role as the prostitute Fantine in the 2012 movie, Les Miserables. Her performance in this movie was widely acclaimed and it fetched her the Academy Award, Golden Globe, BAFTA, SAG Awards for Best Supporting Actress. She has also described that she was quite overwhelmed when preparing for this role and felt that she was in a state of physical and emotional deprivation. At the same time, she did not regret her new look at all. She said of her new look, “I’m just so pleased with how I look, so I now quite like having short hair. I did it for a film, so it really wasn’t about me and my security. My mom was in the show when I was a kid. She actually covered Fantine and went on the national tour, so it was a really big part of my childhood.”

12. Cate Blanchett

Winner of two Academy Awards, Cate Blanchett famously shaved off her head for her 2002 movie, Heaven. This movie was an international co-production and featured producers from Germany, France, the US and the UK. Its dialogues were in Italian and English and it was intended to be the first part of a trilogy. The acclaimed actress was quite happy with her decision, “I think you’ve just got to embrace it. You have to be prepared to shed your natural vanity, and if the part requires it, shed parts of yourself that perhaps make you feel more secure.”

She also said that she loved her new look and she ignored advice that she should don a cap to hide her bald head. She explained, “As a teenager, I wanted to shock my mother and cut off all my hair! My agent advised me to wear a cap but I don’t care. It feels great when the wind blows over your bald head.”

11. Charlize Theron

Ever the professional, Charlize Theron shaved her head for the 2015 movie, Mad Max: Fury Road. She said of her decision, “This was an exciting one for me. Let’s just shave it.’ The next day we did it. I can’t even imagine doing it any other way.”

In this post-apocalyptic action movie, Charlize Theron portrayed the role of Imperator Furiosa, a rebellious henchwoman of the tyrannical Immortan Joe. Natalie has said that she was excited by the prospect of having her head shaved, “For me, personally, I was excited to have the opportunity to throw vanity away for a little and go around with no hair, but, obviously, I was in character at the moment it happened, so for her it is a very traumatic experience. She is not choosing it. It’s being forced upon her as a pretty violent act.”

9. Tilda Swinton

If you have seen Doctor Strange, you must have been awestruck by Tilda Swinton’s look in the movie. Tilda actually shaved her head for this movie – her bald head was not achieved by CGI or a skull cap. Tilda said that it was her idea to go with this look in the movie. According to her, The Ancient One, her character in the movie, was a very fluid character and she felt that this androgynous look and the shaving of her head was necessary to convey this essential aspect.

She further explains, “It certainly centers everything because we’re making shapes and these shapes are pretty rocking, they’re all pretty graphic. We’re filling a big universe, and so the look and the sort of plasticity of us is really important to us when we’re striking poses here.” Reportedly, she had also instructed the movie makers to keep her look in the movie a secret for as long as possible. She said that this would help shock the audience and achieve a more impressive reaction.

8. Britney Spears

In 2007, while going through a particularly rough patch in her personal life, Britney Spears walked into a salon and shaved off her head. Fans of Britney Spears would certainly recall the shock generated by the first pictures that showed her shaving her head. That same year, Britney was treated at various drug rehabilitation facilities and later, she also lost custody of her children. Over the years, there has been a lot of speculation about the reason Britney shaved her head. One unproven rumor claimed that she did it in order to hide her drug use.

In one interview, Britney said, “I sit there and I look back and I’m like, “I’m a smart person. What the hell was I thinking?” I’ve been through a lot in the past two or three years, and there’s a lot that people don’t know. Sometimes I think I get kind of lonely because you don’t open the gate up that much, you know what I mean?”

7. Lupita Nyong’o

Lupita Nyong’o, who won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for the movie 12 Years a Slave, had her head completely shaved off at the age of 19. But I’ve kept my hair short ever since.”

Lupita has also said that her father had accidentally inspired her to take this drastic step. She has also stated that it took her some time to adjust to the new look. She said, “I wasn’t sure if I could pull off the bald look. Almost on a whim, I was like, what if I didn’t have it? And so I shaved it all off – I was a complete baldy! It was shocking at first, especially for my mom. But I learned to embrace my features.”

6. Sigourney Weaver

Often called “the Sci-fi queen” due to her numerous roles in the science fiction genre, Sigourney Weaver famously had her head shaved off for the 1992 movie, Alien 3. She also suggested that this new look helped to bring out the vulnerable aspects of the character that she portrayed onscreen.

In one interview, she said, “I think it makes everybody’s face really jump out. Maybe you do have to pay more attention to the faces of the people, but I think it brings out the faces and the vulnerability of these actors very much.” Anyways, audiences certainly did not have any problems with this look and the movie went on to earn nearly $160 million on a budget of less than $60 million.

5. Karen Gillan

I think everybody should do it once in their life.”

She has also said that she found her new look a bit weird. In one interview, she said, “It was a really weird experience, but it was also weirdly liberating. And fun and interesting as a social experiment just to see how differently people treated me. I think people were pretty intimidated by me, and I kind of liked it while I was playing the role. It’s never happened to me before!”

4. Amber Rose

Ok, Amber Rose, the noted model, rapper, actress and fashion designer, is a bit of an exception on this list. While most of the other ladies here had opted for the shaved look on one occasion, Amber has regularly maintained a shaved look for nearly 14 years. Talking about her choice of hairstyle, Amber said in an interview, “I think that I’d definitely seen Sinead O’Connor’s ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ video. I was inspired by her. And I grew up in Philly… Eve was really popular, and my friends said, ‘Please don’t do it, Amber, you’re gonna look crazy.’ And, of course, me being me, I rebelled against everyone and went straight down the middle at a barber shop. Fourteen years later, I still have it.”

Amber has also shared that her shaved look is difficult to maintain. She says that she gets her naturally brunette hair shaved and bleached after every three days. She has also warned her fans that she loves to experiment and may well try a different style at some stage.

3. Ellen Page

The famous Canadian actress, Ellen Page, is widely known for her roles in such movies as Juno, Inception, and the X-Men series. While the movie itself was not a big hit, Ellen’s performance in the film was noted and it helped establish her as a powerful actress.

In this movie, Ellen portrayed Sherry, a down and out American teenager living on the streets of Europe. She gets involved with a group who call themselves SPARK (Street People Armed with Radical Knowledge) and goes on a trip to Europe with this group. Along the way, she comes to realize that the leader of the group is abusing and bullying the other members. Sherry later escapes from the group and continues to hitchhike across Europe.

The funniest responses came from my children, who would say to their friends, ‘Hey, do you want to come look at my mom’s head?’ as if I was a show and tell item.”

Interestingly, Tallulah Willis – Bruce Willis and Demi Moore’s daughter – also had her head shaved off recently. Like mother, like daughter. In an interview, Tallulah mentioned, “I actually watched GI Jane two days before I shaved my head. I don’t think I was 100 percent inspired by it but I think, it may have manifested the idea in my head.”

1. Natalie Dormer

Ok, Natalie Dormer only shaved off part of her head. But, as you can see, that actually makes for an even more unique and striking look than what the other women on this list achieved. Natalie shaved off part of her head for her role in The Hunger Games movies, in which she portrayed the role of Cressida, a rebellious filmmaker. In this series, Cressida initially works for the oppressive Capitol. Later, though, she joins the rebellion along with her camera crew. She escapes from the Capitol and flees to District 13. She said, “Every single day it was clean-shaven – to put the tattoo transfer on every day. So it was bare skin for nine months. I loved it, but it was cold.”
