You know the deal with Ronda Rousey. She’s one of the most popular athletes of our time. This is the woman who made it possible for women to even fight in the MMA. It is no surprise that she was one of the most Googled celebrities in 2015 and has continued to take the world by storm since then. The world is watching Rousey closely right now, especially in the wake of her loss to Amanda Nunes. Is this the end of Rousey’s fighting career as we know it? Keep reading, because we will get to that.
Rousey prefers to keep things private. We only know what she has told us– what she wants us to know– which was primarily via her autobiography, My Life/Your Life. However, some important people in Rousey’s life, both past and present, have shockingly come to expose things about her since her rise to stardom, including intimate details and also where she is today after UFC 207. Since she’s one of the most popular people in the entertainment business right now, we are giving you exactly what you want, compiling a list of 15 private things that Ronda Rousey doesn’t want you to know.
15. Raisinets Got Stuck Up Her Nose
Ronda Rousey is a beast who is supposed to be afraid of basically no one. Except for Raisinets that is, the chocolate-covered raisins. Indeed, a tiny chocolate-covered raisin nearly knocked Rousey out for good when she was just a tot. To this day, she is still terrorized by them. The story goes like this: just like you would imagine kids might do, Ronda and her two sisters were shoving Raisinets up their nostrils. Everything was fine and dandy until it went too far. Unfortunately for Rousey, she took the game very seriously (just as you would expect, right?) and things got out of hand when she pushed the raisin too far up her nose. Panic then ensued and a little Rousey was on her way to the emergency room. Thankfully, we all know how this ends – Rousey survived the attack of the Raisinet. She won. Rousey 1, Raisinet 0 (the chocolate ended up melting and the Raisinet popped out just before they reached the emergency room).
14. She’s a Terror Leading Up To A Fight
We will start off our posts fairly mild. The girl is kind of frightening to be around in the two weeks leading up to a fight, according to one of her sisters, which she revealed in an article for ESPN since she’s a sports writer. She’s miserable to be around because she’s trying to get as lean as possible for her fight, meaning that she’s hangry. Yes, we said hangry – a combination of hungry and angry. She’s also training like a beast at the same time, which makes her tired. The combination makes for an irritable Rousey, which her sister called Ronda Rousey’s “two-week-itis.” Her sister is probably putting this all very lightly. Rousey has talked before about how stressed and the amount of adrenaline coursing through her veins in the days leading up to a fight. We would want to be nowhere near her, as we value our safety. In any case, Rousey’s “two-week-itis” is a detail she probably would not have shared otherwise.
13. She’s a Softy
When Travis Browne confirmed his relationship with Ronda Rousey in 2015, he also had some additional things to say about her – particularly about her softer side. Browne said “how compassionate and really how much of a sweetheart she really is. That’s what a lot of people don’t see out of her. They see that, but they don’t really get to experience that.” We can assume that Rousey probably would have preferred that he didn’t say those things because for one, she doesn’t like the public knowing any personal details about her life. But even more than that is that this little detail could potentially diminish Rousey’s powerful image, even if only slightly. When people think of Ronda Rousey, they think of someone seemingly invincible, but this contradicts that. We see that Travis was only trying to be complimentary toward his girl, but Rousey might not have appreciated it.
12. Her Mom Is Rude To Her Boyfriends
To the outsider, this little tidbit that we are going to dive into makes Ronda Rousey’s mother seem like a bit of a well, let’s go with “unpleasant.” She calls each one of Rousey’s boyfriends by the same name: Bob. Each consecutive boyfriend earns a number: i.e. Bob 1, Bob 2, etc. Sure, it may seem kind of funny, but it would probably be hurtful to Rousey’s boyfriends. It is problematic for two reasons. First of all, Bob is not a great name (we apologize if your name is Bob). Secondly, it isn’t very welcoming – in fact, if we were trying to date Rousey, it would feel more than a little off-putting to have her mother call us by a name that isn’t even our own. Apparently, her mother won’t change her ways until Rousey is married. How does Ronda feel about this? Does it cause tension between the two? We know that Ronda thinks very highly of her mother, who we will add is very impressive in her own right, and would want her mother to think well of her boyfriends. Could this jeopardize their relationship? We do that that Rousey’s mother talked about the two not always agreeing on things, which she did in a blog post she wrote after Rousey’s most recent loss, saying, “Ronda and I don’t always see eye to eye.” In any case, we’re guessing Rousey would have preferred if her sister didn’t share this information with the public – it doesn’t make her mother look very flattering.
11. Her Father’s Tragic Suicide Details
Obviously, everything we know about Ronda Rousey’s father is because Rousey has told us those things. That was primarily in her best-selling autobiography, My Fight/Your Fight. However, this is a part of Rousey’s life that she does not talk about much at all. Obviously, that is quite understandable. We imagine that although Rousey shared this information with the public, there was a large part of her that was hesitant to do so. Rousey’s father took his life when Rousey was eight years old. After a snowmobile accident, he found out that he had a rare disease that would eventually make him a paraplegic and that it would take his life in two years. Because he didn’t want to burden his family with medical bills, he took his own life. The particular details that emerged here — namely that he took his life in the garage while all of his children watched Nickelodeon inside — will haunt Rousey forever.
10. Ex-BF Mind Games Prior To Loss
Ex-boyfriends have no place in commenting on their ex-girlfriends’ lives anymore, in our humble opinion. Unfortunately for Ronda Rousey, that wasn’t the case as her ex-boyfriend Brendan Schaub, a former fighter, got candid about her mental health ahead of UFC 207. He said, “My money is still on Ronda, that’s banking on her mental state being good. But from what I hear and with the time off, that’s up for debate, which is scary.” Isn’t that kind of psyching Rousey out? In our opinion, this was kind of vindictive because he knew very well that Rousey was not addressing the media in the lead-up to the fight. We can assume at this point that Rousey was definitely not thrilled about the speculations coming from her ex-boyfriend, especially just before she had to go out in the ring. He should have simply wished her good luck and moved on.
9. Her Mom’s Judgemental Blog
We can probably assume that Ronda Rousey wasn’t exactly thrilled when her mother wrote a blog post about Rousey’s choice of friends back in 2015. Really? Isn’t that something you should discuss with, well, your daughter? While her mother writes from the very beginning that “First of all, if you came here thinking this was going to be a post trashing Ronda you can stop reading now because I’m her mom,” we don’t exactly see the point of writing the blog post in the first place. De Mars wrote, “I think some of the people she hangs out with are douche bags.” She then went on to describe the “bubble” that forms around entertainers and how people don’t say “no” to them. She feared that the same thing was happening to Rousey. We get it, she’s concerned about her daughter. But don’t write a public blog post about it. Naturally what followed was media attention, could have otherwise been avoided.
8. Travis Browne Spoke On Their Romance
We are going to go ahead and assume that when Travis Browne officially went on the record and confirmed his relationship with Ronda Rousey publicly, Rousey was not happy. We gather this because when asked about whether or not she was “cool” with Browne confirming the news, Rousey hung up. Trouble in paradise? Browne said that the two met at the gym and that “She’s my woman, and I’m her man. There’s no boyfriend-girlfriend stuff. There’s no dating. We’re together.” Rousey eventually confirmed the relationship to ESPN, saying, “I don’t talk about my personal life much. That’s why it’s called ‘personal life.’ It’s true that Travis and I are in a relationship. I’ve really enjoyed the time we have spent together and getting to know one another. And that’s all I’m going to say about it.” Rousey was probably content to let relationship rumours continue on longer, especially in the wake of the controversy surrounding the domestic abuse allegations against Browne.
7. Brendan Schaub Breakup Details
Again we have Brendan Schaub not knowing when to be quiet. Schaub is clearly one of those pain in the neck boyfriends that just won’t play nice after a relationship has ended. When asked about his former relationship with Ronda Rousey, Schaub ended up giving details about the reason for the breakup, unflattering ones, of course. Schaub said that “I’m too much [of a man]. She needs a guy who’s going to take a backseat. That’s not me. She also needs a guy that’s going to say ‘yes ma’am.’” The host of the podcast, Joe Rogan, actually had to shut things down himself, telling Schaub that Rousey was not there to defend herself, leaving Schaub with no choice but to apologize. It is all kind of embarrassing and definitely not a good look for Schaub. It’s time to move on, big guy. We know for a fact that Rousey was not impressed with Schaub’s opinion on the matter.
6. The Private Moment After Her Devastating Loss
Rousey was very quiet after her second defeat at UFC 207 to Amanda Nunes up until a day or so ago, only making a written statement to ESPN that said “I need time to reflect and think about the future.” She also posted a cryptic quote on her Instagram account hours ago but other than that, Rousey has been entirely quiet. She even went into hiding. Other people in her life, however, particularly UFC president Dana White, have shared details about the aftermath that Rousey probably would have preferred to kept quiet. Speaking to ESPN, White said that the moments after her devastating loss, Rousey was completely silent. He said, “I must have tears, blood and boogers all over my f—ing jacket. I went in there and hugged her for 45 minutes…I told her, ‘I love you so much, and whatever you want to do next, I got your back. You built this. This doesn’t exist without you. You’re the best decision I ever made.'” It was probably hard for Rousey to hear White admit her utter devastation so soon after.
5. She Hit “Rock Bottom”
The first question on everyone’s minds after UFC 207 was “What is Ronda Rousey thinking right now?” Rousey was quiet before and even quieter afterward, with the exception of a written statement to ESPN. Up until mere hours ago, Rousey was entirely quiet on social media, too, until she shared a quote on her Instagram account that read, “And so rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life.” Pay attention to the “rock bottom” part of the quote. This sounds all too familiar to Rousey’s last loss to Holly Holm in 2015. We can gather that Rousey is struggling right now. While there is a sense of hope contained in the quote, there is also a lot of despair that she obviously relates to. This was her second chance at redemption. Arguably her loss would be much more difficult to accept this time around as she can’t chop it up to mere chance this time. Rousey is more than likely reliving those same feelings of loss for a second time and is perhaps even the dark thoughts. This is not something that Rousey wants you to know – at least not yet.
4. Rousey Thinks She Is Ruined
Let’s return again to Ronda Rousey’s very telling Instagram post of a J.K. Rowling quote: “And so rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I built my life.” The “rock bottom” part of the quote gives us insight into Rousey’s mindset right now. But the “rebuilt” part of it reinforces this idea even further. Rebuilding something implies that something is damaged. Because Rousey’s sense of self is so tired with her career success, we can assume that Rousey believes that some part of her, whether it’s her very essence, her image or her career (and likely all three), is ruined. At least at this present moment, she likely does not think she is capable of winning another fight, or if she does, it will take a lot of time and “rebuilding” to be able to do. Rousey is absolutely crushed.
3. Ronda Knew She Might Lose
The nearly invisible Ronda Rousey had an inkling that she might lose at UFC 207 or at least acknowledged it was possible. While we could chop this up to realistic thinking, it also implies a loss of fire. Either way you look at it, Rousey probably does not want you to know this because that’s not the Rousey we are accustomed to. So, how do we know that Rousey thought she might lose, you ask? There are a few reasons. First of all, she did not take part in any of the promotional events that always take place before a fight. She did appear on Ellen and Conan but that was it.
This was due to a deal she made with UFC President Dana White, which she made before she would even consider fighting Amanda Nunes. The deal was she wouldn’t have to do any media related activities. She also did not attend the post-fight news conference. What we can gather from this is that Rousey was not feeling her usual self, both before and after. Even more than that, it would seem like she was defeated even before the fight already started. If we look at a quote Rousey shared on Instagram days before the fight, it was as if she was preparing herself for a potential loss. The quote said, “Those who are really in earnest must be willing to be anything or nothing in the world’s estimation.”
2. Rousey Never Recovered From Holly Holm
Ronda Rousey certainly hasn’t confirmed this fact herself. Obviously, she never would. But it is something that was speculated on ESPN and if you happened to watch Rousey’s most recent 48-second knockout, it does seem to have some merit to it. Rousey looked defeated almost immediately. Some believe that she had a flashback of her famous loss to Holly Holm. From the weigh in to the KO, it was all bad, and once it happened, it was impossible for Rousey to recover. Most of us are probably familiar with how hard this first loss was on Rousey – so hard, in fact, that she had thoughts of suicide. The link between her self-worth and her career, as pointed out on ESPN, shows that the knockout was more than just a loss for Rousey. It shook her to her core; it ate away at who she was as a very person. She may never recover. Is this the end for one of the most popular female athletes of our time? In our opinion, Rousey may not recover. And that is something that Rousey does not want you to know.
1. She May Never Fight Again
At this point, Ronda Rousey’s future in the MMA is unknown. However, if we take the collective of what everyone has said about the topic, including Rousey’s own cryptic statements, perhaps she may not return at all. First of all, let’s address UFC president Dana White’s statements. According to ESPN, White spoke with “resignation” on the topic – in other words, he thinks that retirement is inevitable. ESPN, too, believes that this will be Rousey’s last fight. The media believes that this may be the end of Rousey’s MMA career and so do some of her opponents. Rousey’s own mother even wants Rousey to retire, which is significant because Rousey thinks highly of her mother and probably values her opinion. That said, her mother did want Rousey to retire years ago, but whether or not she voiced these opinions to her is another matter.
