We can say what we want, but being a celebrity is extremely hard and exhausting for the most part. Oh yes, celebs can’t do anything without being scrutinized. With all the fame brings a lot of attention to their lives as well. And believe me, the media is constantly looking for scandals. On top of that, nowadays, when technology is so developed, it takes only a few clicks for any news to go viral, and sadly, it is impossible to control something that is already viral. It means that celebs must be extremely cautious about their behavior, comments, and appearance if they want to stay on top.
However, even the best of us make mistakes. I mean, it is impossible to be perfect all the time. The only difference is that when I make a mistake only a few people see it, but when celebs do it, the whole world notices. Sadly, the world is not very forgiving, and one wrong word can cost a career. I will be honest; I feel sorry for a couple of the celebrities on this list because I can tell that they didn’t mean to hurt anybody by their awkwardly phrased comments. That being said, most of the celebs on this list totally deserved to see their careers go down the drain.
15. John Mayer – “My D*ck Is A White Supremacist.”
John Mayer is one of the top artists of his generation. His songs are soulful and touching. However, he might not be such a ‘soulful’ man when it comes to talking about the bedroom. In 2010, John Mayer gave a very controversial interview to Playboy. When the journalist asked: “Do black women throw themselves at you?” John Mayer replied:
“I don’t think I open myself to it. My d*ck is sort of like a white supremacist.”
Of course, he later apologized and said that all he meant was that black women are not his type. Is there a more cringe-worthy way to say such a thing, living in culture, which has a long history of issues surrounding racism? Yeah, John Mayer did a massive mistake calling his love muscle a white supremacist. It surely didn’t help his career reach new highs. Later on, talking about this incident, Mayer said: “I wanted to be a blues guitar player. And a singer. And a songwriter. Not a shock jock. I don’t have the stomach for it.” Well, John, don’t say stupid things then. It’s that simple.
14. Tila Tequila – “Using Necromancy To Bring My Boo Hitler Back To Life”
There is something about Hitler that celebs just love. Do you still remember Tila Tequila, the superstar who had a string of reality shows on MTV? I remember watching her dating show, and thinking that she is quite crazy, but I never thought that it was this bad. A couple of years ago, when Tila’s career was already facing hard times, so she put the final nail in the coffin. Tila Tequila used her Twitter account to show support for Adolf Hitler on his birthday. She said:
“Using necromancy to bring my boo Hitler back to life so he can really gas I mean… say hello to everyone!” and “On this great day of 420, I will honor our true King! They tried to destroy your legacy, but I will fight for you!”
13. Iconic D-Bag Mel Gibson – “The Jews Are Responsible For All The Wars In The World”
I bet you thought about Mel Gibson the second you saw the title of this article. Oh yes, Mel is a prodigy when it comes to offensive comments. There are so many of them that I could write a whole dissertation on the subject. Here are a few examples:
“F*cking Jews… The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world…” Wait a second, is it still Mel Gibson, or Adolf Hitler?
“I want to kill him… I want his intestines on a stick… I want to kill his dog.” That was Mel Gibson’s reaction to a bad review of The Passion of Christ in the New York Times. And I always thought that I wasn’t good at handling criticism… The worst part is that Mel Gibson is proud of his behavior and I doubt that he is going to stop anytime soon. “I am one tough motherf*cker, and you can’t bother me anymore.” The only thing that still keeps Mel Gibson in the business is his raw talent, which cannot be denied.
12. CeeLo Green – It Isn’t A Rape If The Victim Is Unconscious
Have you noticed that CeeLo Green is no longer present in the entertainment business? Well, there is a very solid reason for that. A couple of years ago, American singer and songwriter CeeLo Green occupied all the headlines of every major magazine after he faced accusations of raping an unconscious girl. This case never officially went to court so CeeLo Green is technically not guilty, but his comments definitely ended his career. Instead of trying to be diplomatic, CeeLo decided to be ignorant. “Women who have really been raped REMEMBER!!!” he wrote on his Twitter account. Following that tweet, he said “If someone is passed out they’re not even WITH you consciously! so WITH Implies consent.” Seriously, CeeLo? Yes, he tried to tell the world that it is not rape if the victim is unconscious. What a f*cking d-bag.
“I do realize in retrospect that it was highly sensitive, what I tweeted – highly irresponsible. It did stem from emotion causing some involuntary action, and I do believe that maybe just possibly, we could all give each other a margin for human error.” It was CeeLo’s last try to fix the problem before the world stopped paying attention to him.
11. Paula Deen – “I Want True Southern Plantation-Style Themed Wedding”
Paula Deen was and extremely successful TV persona before her scandal in 2013, which cost her contracts with Food Network, Smithfield Foods, Walmart, Target, QVC, Caesars Entertainment, Novo Nordisk, J.C. Penney, Sears, and Kmart. I know, Paula Deen lost it all. However, there is a good reason for that.
In 2013, Lisa Jackson filed a lawsuit against Paula Deen, alleging her for racial and sexual discrimination. During the trial, Paula Deen confessed that she used the N-word numerous of times in the past. She also said that she wanted her brother’s wedding to be a “true Southern plantation-style theme,” which included Afro-American male waiters. To have thoughts like this one is wrong, but to say it out loud is outrageously dumb. It is just too hard to feel sorry for Paula Deen, even though she was a great host of her culinary shows. Of course, later Paula Deen said: “Inappropriate, hurtful language is totally, totally unacceptable… Please forgive me for the mistakes that I’ve made.” Sadly, her career was already over at that time.
10. Lars Von Trier – “I Understand Hitler. I Sympathize With Him”
I am a die-hard fan of Lars Von Trier. Every movie of his is brilliant and thought-provoking. Von Trier is incredibly talented and manages to depict the biggest issues facing humanity in a weird and funny way. If you haven’t seen Melancholia, Dogville, or any other of his movies, watch it (you can thank me later). However, sometimes even geniuses like Lars Von Trier cross all the lines and make themselves look like fools. In 2011, Lars Von Trier said something that he will be sorry about forever.
“What can I say? I understand Hitler. He did some wrong things, absolutely, but I can see him sitting there in his bunker at the end… I sympathize with him, yes, a little bit.”
He instantly defended himself, saying that he is not anti-semitic or racist. However, it was not enough and the Cannes Film Festival banned him for that year. Lars Von Trier only commented: “I highly respect the Cannes festival, but I also understand that they are very angry with me right now. However, I’m no Mel Gibson.”
9. Chris Brown – “She Needs A Beating”
The real question is if Chris Brown was ever a celebrity in the first place. He only got popular because of his scandal with Rihanna, when Chris Brown beat her up in 2009. Of course, he is still releasing hit singles and making money, but people will never look at him seriously. Chris Brown is one of the most hated celebs all over the world. However, beating Rihanna was not the only scandal that Chris Brown got himself into. In 2012, he attacked Cher on Twitter, saying:
“That damn granny b*tch Cher needs to keep her mouth shut about her opinion against Obama! Smh she needs a beating.” Am I the only one thinking that saying something like “she needs a beating,” is not the best thing to say when you have a criminal record for actually doing so? Well, it is not right even if you don’t have a record. Of course, Chris Brown said that his Twitter was hacked and he didn’t write this comment. What else can you say, though? Anyway, Chris Brown could have been a much bigger star if he at least tried to behave like a human.
8. Iggy Azalea And Her “Problem” With Racism
Iggy Azalea was big in 2014. “Fancy” was a number one single on U.S. Billboard Hot 100, followed by “Problem” in the second place. It looked like the sky was the limit for her career. However, in reality, her racist and homophobic comments soon came to light. Some hardcore stalkers found a couple of Iggy’s old tweets, which I bet she wishes she had never written.
“Just saw 5 black men get arrested out the front of Popeyes.” Iggy lost all of her Afro-American fans just with this one message. However, that was not the end: “Is it wrong I feel happy to hear southern accent again & not Mexican ones? F*ck it. I am,” she said and saw how the rest of the fans turned back on her. On top of that, later Iggy Azalea made a couple of homophobic remarks which cost her a performing slot at the Pittsburgh Pride parade.
7. Charlie Sheen – “Lorre Is A Stupid, Stupid Little Man And A P*ssy Punk”
First of all, Two And A Half Man was never the same without Charlie Sheen. I mean, how could it be? After all, Two and a Half Man was nothing more than a TV series about Charlie Sheen himself. He did not even need to act. With all due respect to Ashton Kutcher, he could not live up to Charlie Sheen’s legacy. That said, I totally understand why CBS and Warner Brothers Television sacked Charlie Sheen. That man was a loose cannon from the beginning. The last comments, which made CBS pull the chord were the following:
“I embarrassed Chuck Lorre (creator of Two and a Half Man) in front of his children and the world by healing at a pace that his un-evolved mind cannot process. He’s a stupid, stupid little man and a p*ssy punk that I’d never want to be like. That’s me being polite.”
6. Azealia Banks – “If I Could Put All The N***ers Who Think Like You In Jail, I Would.”
Most of the celebs ruined their careers with just one stupid comment. However, Azealia Banks is not one of them. She is the female version of Mel Gibson when it comes to outrageous and insulting comments. Let’s be honest; Azealia Banks surely has some serious talent. However, instead of enjoying fame, she is now sharing cooking recipes live on her Facebook. One of her infamous comments was:
“F*ck you wale. And f*ck you forever. If I could put all the n***ers who think like you in jail, I would.”
That is not what you want to say out loud, Azealia… The remaining fans of Azealia had put up with a lot of BS for quite some time, but last straw was when she got into a feud with Zayn Malik.
5. Megan Fox – “Michael Bay Wants To Be Like Hitler On His Sets”
The Transformers movies were never the same without Megan Fox. I remember how heartbroken I was to find out that Rosie Huntington-Whiteley became the new leading actress in the Transformers movies. To be completely honest, I never even watched the silly sequels after she left. I mean, those movies were all about Megan Fox. That said, I completely understand why Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg fired her. She totally had it coming after she made a dumb comment about working with Michael Bay:
“He wants to be like Hitler on his sets, and he is. So he’s a nightmare to work for but when you get him away from the set, and he’s not in director mode, I kind of really enjoy his personality because he’s so awkward, so hopelessly awkward. He has no social skills at all.”
With all due respect to Megan Fox’s beauty, she acted absolutely unprofessional. I mean, didn’t Megan Fox think that comparing her boss to Hitler might backfire? Either way, she deserved what she got.
4. Glenn Hoddle – “Disabled People Are Paying For Their Past Life Crimes”
Everyone who is from the UK will remember how fast Glenn Hoddle wasted his career. In 1999, he was a manager of the England national football (soccer) team. It might sound like a casual job if you are not familiar with European football, but if you are, you know that being a manager of English national football team is like a dream come true. Anyway, what did Glenn Hoddle do to ruin his career? When talking about disabled people, he said:
“You and I have been physically given two hands and two legs and half-decent brains. Some people have not been born like that for a reason. The karma is working from another lifetime. I have nothing to hide about that. It is not only people with disabilities. What you sow, you have to reap.”
3. Gilbert Gottfried Got Fired For Comments Regarding Japan
Do you remember classical 90’s trash movie Problem Child? It was such a great movie back then, and Gilbert Gottfried had one of the leading roles. He played a whacko school principal, and it was fun to watch it despite the fact that the acting was terrible. After his fame in Problem Child, Gilbert Gottfried landed a deal with Aflac and became the voice of Aflac the duck in those brilliant commercials. His voice was paying all the bills for 11 years until Gilbert screwed up big time. He thought that it would be cool to make fun of Japan after an earthquake and tsunami struck the country in 2011.
“I just split up with my girlfriend, but like the Japanese say, “They’ll be another one floating by any minute now.”
It was the worst joke ever. I can understand that Gilbert Gottfried was only trying to be funny, but boy, did it backfire. Aflac, the biggest insurance company in Japan, fired Gilbert in a matter of seconds. His career has been a disaster ever since.
2.Trevor Noah And His Anti-Semitic Comments
Trevor Noah became the host of The Daily Show in 2015, replacing the legendary Jon Stewart. It seemed like a huge step in his career, but within a couple of hours, a big scandal emerged. Someone dug deep into his Twitter and found many anti-semitic and sexist comments from 2009. Some of the most outrageous were:
“Almost bumped a Jewish kid crossing the road. He didn’t look b4 crossing but I still would have felt so bad in my German car!”
“Oh yeah, the weekend. People are gonna get drunk & think that I’m sexy!” – fat chicks everywhere.”
Trevor Noah learned the hard way that it is wise to delete old tweets before someone else finds them. Of course, we all know that Noah was only joking, but those “innocent” jokes damaged his reputation big time. It looks like only comedians on stage are allowed to make insulting jokes nowadays.
1. Scott Baio And His Sexist And Racist Comments
Scott Baio was great in sitcoms such as Happy Days and Charles in Charge. The nation really loved him. That is the reason why he should have stuck with acting instead of trying to make political remarks. Scott Baio supported Donald Trump during the election campaign. However, Scott Baio made sure to make his presence known by making outrageous comments.
“Taxes are done… That should feed, house & provide medical for a few lazy non-working people at my expense. Have a great Monday!” This comment is inappropriate and full of hate. Why couldn’t he use proper words to express his beliefs? Oh wait, that is not what bigots do. Anyway, Scott Baio also supported Trump after the infamous “locker-room talk” scandal.
“Ladies out there, this is what guys talk about when you’re not around. So if you’re offended by it, grow up, ok?” That is what Scott Baio said. Well, I don’t talk like that. Maybe I am not manly enough, huh?
