The best actors in the world are those who can transform themselves into the characters they’re supposed to portray on the movie screen. That can be one hell of a Herculean task depending on the character your director and the screenplay writers created for you to play. For example, could you imagine having to play the Joker? We have all seen the emotional and psychological stress a role like that can place on an actor, but we are not here to talk about tragedies. Actually, we are here to talk about the exact opposite.
While playing a character in psychological thrillers can be a tough task that takes a toll on the actor, so can playing a character in a romance. First of all, romances might be the one aspect of acting in which most celebrities need to excel at in order to sell a movie. If we asked you right now, you could probably come up with 10 instances in which actors failed to sell romances and botched the whole movie because of it. When it is done right, though, movie romances can convince even the actors that they are real. And to prove that very point, we decided to make a list of 15 movies you forgot sparked celebrity relationships. It all might have started in fiction but sometimes, characters are so strong that they can become a reality after all. Of course, a lot of these couples are not together anymore, but the movie bliss was enough for them to give the public some amazing relationships.
15. The Amazing Spider-Man
Since we’re talking about amazing relationships that began on movie sets, what better way to start than with The Amazing Spider-Man? The movie got a lot of mixed reviews, and it is up to you to decide. But most people would agree that Andrew Garfield was more faithful to the character of Peter Parker than Tobey Maguire was on Hollywood’s first try.
Nevertheless, who the better Spiderman was is not the point here. What we would like to remind you is that it was during the filming of The Amazing Spider-Man that one of the most entertaining Hollywood relationships began. She did not play Mary Kate Watson, but Emma Stone won the hearts of both Spiderman and the actor behind him, while she played the role of Gwen Stacy.
The two of them eventually started dating and have been playing with the public’s hearts ever since. Some people are crazy about these two staying as a couple, so whenever rumors of them breaking up or getting back together surface, we have individuals who analyze everything through a microscope like this:
14. I Know What You Did Last Summer
If there is one cartoon relationship that has puzzled people for decades, especially those who watched a lot of cartoons in the ‘90s, it is the relationship between Fred and Daphne from Scooby Doo. Well, if there is a silver lining behind the relationship between those characters, it is that fans imagined they would eventually end up like the actors who played them in the live-action adaptation. Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. are the real-life equivalent of what Fred and Daphne should be in the cartoon.
These two celebrities have been married for 15 years, and their bond seems to be getting stronger with each passing day. But while they might have played Daphne and Fred early on in their relationship, Sarah and Freddie actually began dating after they starred together in the classic I Know What You Did Last Summer. They started their friendship during the filming, have been best friends ever since, and have two children together.
13. Nowhere Boy
In Hollywood, we have what can almost be considered a trope when it comes to relationships. How many times have we seen an older director getting involved with a younger actress and eventually starting a relationship?
Almost too many, right? Well, here we have one particular case in which the tables were turned. Most people might know Sam Taylor-Johnson because she was the director of the much anticipated 2015 adaptation of 50 Shades of Grey. But before she was the director of 50 Shades of Grey, Sam directed a movie called Nowhere Boy that was released in 2009.
She was 42 years old when they started filming the movie. And, apparently, she took a page out of the playbook of her male counterparts and started dating the 18-year-old star of the film, Aaron Johnson. First of all, props to Sam. Second of all, this is as peculiar as Hollywood relationships get. Just check this out: earlier in March, the 26-year-old Aaron was celebrating his wife’s 50th birthday.
12. Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Penelope Cruz might just be the most famous Spanish actress of her generation. She has appeared in juggernauts like Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Sex and the City 2. But it was her most acclaimed performance that changed her life. We are talking about when she starred in Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona. She was not the lead actress for the movie, but she landed a bunch of awards afterward. Those included the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, the Alma Award for Best Actress, the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Supporting Actress, and most importantly, she won the heart of the lead actor, Javier Bardem.
The two of them had already co-starred in a movie back in 1992. But it was apparently the bond they formed while filming Vicky Cristina Barcelona that prompted the two of them to start a serious relationship. The couple got married in 2010, and they have two children.
11. Good Will Hunting
Matt Damon has had more breakthrough roles than any Hollywood actor before him ever dreamed. This guy is almost like a boxer who somehow keeps landing title shots in every promotion he goes to. But it was during one of his first breakthroughs that Damon took one on-screen relationship into his real life. That movie was the 1997 classic Good Will Hunting. And no, the relationship we are talking about is not the one between Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. Some people think there’s something there, but that’s a story for another day. We are talking about the bond that Damon formed with his romantic interest in the movie, Minnie Driver.
The relationship between these two was as public as Hollywood relationships get. The people knew everything that was happening between Damon and Driver. Still, the people never seemed to be satiated by the news they got and always wanted more. Perhaps that was one of the reasons why the relationship didn’t last long.
We could not possibly consider making a list like this and including Matt Damon without saving a spot for his partner in crime. Yes, Damon had his shot at bringing a movie relationship into his real life after Good Will Hunting. So, it is only fair that Ben Affleck also got his shot at turning a movie relationship into a real-life affair.
Sorry, an affair is not really the word we should use to describe Affleck’s relationship with Jennifer Garner. These two actually had a beautiful love story for as long as it lasted. Affleck and Garner starred together in 2001 when they were cast for Pearl Harbor, but it was after they filmed Daredevil in 2003 that the friendship between the two of them eventually became a relationship. Soon after that, in 2005, the couple got married in a private ceremony. Together, they had three children and seemed happy until they announced their intention of getting divorced in 2015.
9. The Long, Hot Summer
Let’s hop in a time machine and go back to the past to talk about the next entry on our list. In 1957, a man who is arguably one of the greatest actors ever to live starred in a movie named The Long, Hot Summer. That little movie earned Paul Newman a Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actor as well as a marriage that lasted more than half a century.
His costar in The Long, Hot Summer was the actress Joanne Woodward. The chemistry between the two of them was so amazing that they ended up getting married a year after they began filming the movie. Interestingly enough, Newman was married when the two of them met. But his marriage to Jackie Witte was no hurdle for the love between him and Woodward. He divorced his first wife shortly after filming and married the woman who would be by his side until he passed away in 2008.
8. Edward Scissorhands
Edward Scissorhands is not exactly the kind of movie we would expect to spark a relationship between celebrities. Sure, the primary focus of the film was the life of Edward and how a young woman managed to disregard his peculiarities and fall in love with him. Still, it was surprising to find out that the fiery romance between Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder actually began while they were filming this movie.
By the early ‘90s, Depp was already notorious for breaking up a couple of engagements and already having one divorce on his resume. Still, for some reason, he firmly believed that Ryder was the one for him. At least that’s what most people assume when they find out he tattooed her name on his right arm.
Unfortunately, “Winona forever” ended up being Winona for four years, as that was as long as the relationship between these two lasted. Most recently, Depp divorced his latest wife, actress Amber Heard.
7. X-Men: First Class
Much like Edward Scissorhands, superhero movies are not exactly what promptly comes to our minds when we think about films that can lead fellow actors to start dating. But X-Men: First Class was the movie that started the relationship between Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult.
Katniss Everdeen (oops, sorry! We meant Jennifer Lawrence) began dating her British co-star while they were filming the X-Men movie, and it made a lot of sense since both of their characters would eventually turn blue. Unfortunately, Beast and Mystique did not last long together in real life as they dated for a little over two years. But, here is where things get interesting. Apparently, they started dating again as soon as the filming of X-Men: Days of Future Past began. They would eventually break up again, but we can take one lesson out of this. If you are looking for a boyfriend or a girlfriend, you might want to audition for the next X-Men movie.
6. The Getaway
We already mentioned Paul Newman, so why not talk about another movie legend? Steve McQueen is another superstar who dated someone he met on a movie set. Back in the early ‘70s, McQueen played the lead role in a little movie called The Getaway. Just on a side note about McQueen’s star power, the movie had a budget of $3.3 million, but it still made a huge profit as it pulled in around $36.7 million from the box office. Now back to the subject, his costar in that movie was Ali MacGraw.
We could go on a tangent and say that the massive box office success of the film had something to do with the chemistry between these two. Still, one person who could not have been happy with how good McQueen and MacGraw looked together was her husband, Robert Evans. After she started her relationship with McQueen, Ali eventually divorced the producer and married the actor.
5. The Place Beyond The Pines
There is a reason for why tons of young women have a picture of Eva Mendes stapled to the dart boards in their rooms. Sorry, there might actually not be that many people who do that. But we have to understand how mad a lot of Ryan Gosling fans became after the lead male character from La La Land was taken off the market.
And to throw a last little dagger to the hearts of those young women who have been hoping for the past six years that Gosling would join many of his fellow actors and eventually get divorced, it doesn’t seem like he has any intention of leaving Eva…ever. These two are one of the best couples in Hollywood, and honestly, we hope they stay together for the long haul. After meeting during the filming of The Place Beyond the Pines, Gosling and Mendes never looked back. They are happily married and have two beautiful daughters.
4. Days Of Thunder
Tom Cruise is another one of those guys who doesn’t seem to be afraid of falling in love or even moving on after a failed relationship at all. This guy has dated people like Mimi Rogers, Penelope Cruz, Nazanin Boniadi, and was even married to Katie Holmes. Still, despite having relationships with names like those, it is the 11-year-long marriage to Nicole Kidman that people mostly remember him by. And nothing against Katie Holmes, but the story behind Cruise and Kidman is a more interesting one than the TomKat saga (if we leave out the time he went crazy on Oprah).
Cruise actually met Kidman on the set of their 1990 film Days of Thunder. It seems like it was love at first sight. Unlike some other loves, however, the one between these two was like a tsunami. The fact they ended up getting married that same year should be enough proof of that. Unfortunately, as we all know, the romance between the race car driver and the doctor from Days of Thunder would not last forever.
3. The Last Song
Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth are one of the power couples of Hollywood these days. And as fate would have it, their romance started because of a movie. The Last Song was the first acting gig Miley had in her attempt of getting away from that Hannah Montana aura she had spent her youth being imprisoned by. Let us just say that she got a lot more out of the movie than just the opportunity of coming out of her shell. First, The Last Song was a huge success, scoring almost $90 million on box offices. More than that, however, it was during filming that she met her current fiancé, Liam Hemsworth.
@perezhilton hope you find love one day but can you not fuck with mine. I've never been with Ed W in my life. I was at the studio last night

2. Brokeback Mountain
Brokeback Mountain was one of the most controversial movies of its time. A lot of people had a lot of things to say about the film. There were both good and bad opinions, but the one thing no one can deny is that the love story between Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist made a killing in the box offices. The estimates say the movie made about $178.1 million.
So, try to guess why this film is on our list. No, Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal did not start a romantic relationship during the filming of the movie. What actually happened is that Heath met the future mother of his daughter on the set of Brokeback Mountain. To make things even more interesting, Michelle Williams played the wife of Ledger’s character cheated on with the other cowboy. Ledger and Williams dated for almost three years after that, and they had one little daughter before breaking up in 2007.
1. Mr. And Mrs. Smith
Be honest. From the moment we started this list, did any of you have a single doubt that this was where we were going to end up? Probably not, right? But, what can we do? We try to be entertaining, but you simply cannot get better than this. Imagine how excited the TMZ’s and fans around the world would have been if they knew beforehand that costarring in Mr. and Mrs. Smith would result in Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie joining forces and becoming what was arguably the most publicized celebrity couple in the history of our world.
You can’t get better than this. Two of the biggest stars in moviemaking met on a set and fell in love; a love story we followed for more than a decade. Sure, there were rumors of infidelity because while Brad said he had fallen in love with Jolie on set, he was still married to Jennifer Aniston during the filming of Mr. and Mrs. Smith. But we choose to agree with Mr. Pitt and believe that he waited until his wife filed the divorce papers so he could start the romance with Angelina.
