15 Movies You Didn’t Realize Were Older Than Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber is a Canadian-born pop music icon who rose to fame when a music industry executive discovered him from YouTube videos.

The world has watched this kid grow up into a young man and heartthrob for teenage girls worldwide. Bieber was born on March 1, 1994. As you can imagine, there are countless classic movies that have been around long before the Biebs.

We are not going to go for the obvious films like Wizard of Oz and It’s a Wonderful Life. Instead, we will focus on movies that iconic favorites among the current generation of film-goers. The movies were researched will all be those classics that we still see aired on stations like TBS and FX on the weekends.

These movies are our guilty pleasures and the kind of films you could watch over and over again, many of which you surely have done so. We know we have, in fact, right now one of them is on the tube, in the background, on VH-1 as this article is being composed. So, whether you like Justin Bieber or not. We are positive you will just love our list of 15 Movies You Didn’t Realize Are Older Than Justin Bieber.

15. Uncle Buck

We picked Uncle Buck to make a point right out of the gate. Comedian and fellow Canadian to Justin Bieber, John Candy, died on March 4, 1994. This is exactly three days after Bieber was born. When you think about that, Bieber would not have been alive before any John Candy picture was in the can. If you didn’t feel old before you started reading this list, you should be starting to feel the ravages of time and nature now. Bieber was born one year after River Phoenix passed away. We were going to start the list with Toy Story, but Bieber was already a year old when Toy Story came out and four months old when Forrest Gump, a cable TV cult classic came out.

14. Silence of the Lambs

This film is truly a cable favorite. It still airs on premium channels. Anthony Hopkins‘s Dr. Hannibal “The Cannibal” Lecter could first smell us in 1991, three years before Justin Bieber would be on the menu. This film franchise spawned several more movies, including both sequels and prequels. The first film in this series was Manhunter in 1986, eight years BB (before Bieber). It is unlikely that JB had parental consent to watch any of the films in the series considering he was eight years old when Red Dragon came out. Bieber was 13 years old in 2007 when Hannibal Rising was released and was not a star yet. He was discovered one year later and released his first material in 2009.

13. Raiders of the Lost Ark / Doom / Crusade

To extenuate the many decades in which we will have Bieber to kick around, we bring up ALL three original Indiana Jones movies. Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade all were released from 1980-1989. Bieber’s parents were younger than eight years old when Raiders was released. The world found out about Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in 2008, the same year they found out about Justin Bieber. Harrison Ford, who plays Indiana Jones, is old enough to be Bieber’s grandfather. Ford was born in 1942 and will turn 75 years old on July 13, 2017.

12. Star Wars / Empire / Jedi

You probably didn’t need us to tell you that Justin Bieber was born before the release of any of the original Star Wars motion pictures. However, you probably did not know that Justin Bieber’s mother, Pattie Mallette, was just one year old when Star Wars was first released in theater in 1977. Bieber’s father, Jeremy Bieber, was slightly a week over two years old when Star Wars hit the theaters. Justin Bieber himself, however, was not around for Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, or Return of the Jedi. He was only five years old when the first prequel, Phantom Menace, was released. He wasn’t old enough to be the pop star he later came to be, but he was old enough for Jedi Knight training under Qui Gon Jinn. Can you picture it…Darth Bieber!

11. Back to the Future (1 – 3)

This is the movie we were talking about earlier as being on in the background. It seems like every weekend features a Back to the Future trilogy marathon somewhere. HBO and Showtime still run the timeless exploits of Marty McFly. The first film in the saga came out in 1985. In the movie, Marty travels back 20 plus years before Bieber’s parents were born. When the second film came out, Bieber was still four years away from existence. The stars in Part II travel to 2015. This was a time when Bieber would have barely been able to purchase alcohol legally. In Back to the Future III, the stars venture back to 1885. Bieber’s grandfather, George Bieber, was born in 1932, so even he wasn’t around to see Mad Dog Tannen.

10. Ghostbusters 1 & 2

Who ya gonna call? Justin Bieber could not call anyone when the Ghostbusters first came out. He couldn’t call anyone because to make a call, you must be able to speak. To speak, you must be alive, and Bieber was a long time away from life. The first film was released in 1984 and the sequel in 1989. Justin Bieber never knew the male Ghostbusters as a kid. The reboot, which starred an all-female cast as the Ghostbusters, came out in 2016. In that film, Ghostbusters Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray both made on-screen appearances, among other original members of the cast.

9. National Lampoon’s Vacation (1 Through 3)

Are we there yet? Children enjoy going on family vacations, and maybe Justin Bieber loved going on vacations with his family as a kid. We do know for certain that Bieber never saw the first three National Lampoon’s Vacation movies on the big screen. Vacation was released in 1983, European Vacation in 1985, and Christmas Vacation in 1989. It is most likely that the young Bieber did not see Vegas Vacation in a movie theater either since it was released when JB was still three years old. He was 21 years old when Rusty Griswold was all grown up and took his wife and kids on a family vacation.

8. Goodfellas

Let’s talk about the original mobster film before we get to Goodfellas. Justin Bieber was still not around when anyone of the three Godfather films was released. In addition to that, neither of his parents were around when either of the first two Best Picture winners was released in 1972 and 1974. Godfather III was released in 1990. Goodfellas was also released in 1990. Robert De Niro starred in both Godfather II and Goodfellas. Both Godfather III and Goodfellas were nominated for Best Picture in 1991 as were two other movies that will show up later on the list, one of which won the Oscar. Another De Niro film was the fifth and final film nominated in that category in 1991, Awakenings.

7. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1 through 6 and the reboot)

Justin Bieber never knew it wasn’t safe to go to sleep because he wasn’t around for Nightmare on Elm Street, Nightmare on Elm Street II: Freddy’s Revenge, Nightmare on Elm Street III: Dream Warriors, Nightmare on Elm Street IV: The Dream Master, Nightmare on Elm Street V: The Dream Child, or Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare. When Freddy was brought back once again in Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, Bieber was only seven months old, not even a year old. When Freddy fought Jason, Bieber was nine years old. Speaking of Jason and the number nine…

6. Friday the 13th (1 – 9)

Justin Bieber was not old enough to visit Camp Crystal Lake, much less alive for the original Friday the 13th or the eight sequels that would follow. Those first nine films were released between 1980 and 1993. Since Justin Bieber was born in 1994, he wasn’t around to see Jason go to Hell in that ninth chapter that came out in 1993. However, Bieber was around to see Jason go to outer space in Jason X in 2001 when he was seven years old. There was a Friday the 13th reboot in 2009 that Biebs would have been 15 for when it was released. Another re-reboot is in the works for 2017, but the studios have been experiencing delays.

5. Rocky (1 through 5)

Sylvester Stallone’s original Rocky film won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1977. The era of Bieber was still almost 20 years away. The subsequent numbered Rocky films were released in 1979, 1982, 1985, and 1990, none of which Bieber was around for the sound of the bell. Bieber was 12 when Rocky returned to the ring in Rocky Balboa and was 21 for the latest installment, Creed. Justin Bieber’s parents were alive when Rocky fought Apollo but was most likely not interested in putting on boxing gloves as they probably needed to put on clean diapers. Momma Bieber was only one, and Poppa Bieber was barely two when Rocky first came out.

4. Dances with Wolves

This was the film that won Best Picture in 1991. You might recall that we mentioned it earlier under the Goodfellas section. This was a picture for the ages that have been seen by millions. We do know two people who never saw this one, though. The author of this Bieber piece never saw Kevin Costner‘s critically acclaimed film back then when it was released shortly after his 16th birthday or later, on video or cable TV. The other person who didn’t see the movie in theaters is Justin Bieber. The movie was released in theaters four years before the Bieber duo had their bouncing baby Bieber boy.

3. Ghost

Whoa, my darling, my Bieber, we hunger for your birth… Justin Bieber was unable to die and become a ghost himself yet when this Patrick Swayze flick hit the silver screen because Bieber had not been born yet. He wasn’t even a fetus yet. The movie was the most successful work of the late Patrick Swayze, although Dirty Dancing was a close second. Ghost featured the Righteous Brothers’ song, Unchained Melody. The romantic tune remains one of the most recorded songs in history. Justin Bieber turned 23 in 2017, so he has a good 60 years or so before he becomes a ghost… if he plays his cards right and is a good Bieber.

2. Die Hard 1 & 2

Bruce Willis‘ Detective John McClane started getting into trouble in 1988, long before Justin Bieber was around to utter McClane’s catchphrase, “Yippee Ki Yay!” to his mother. Is that how it went or was it, “Yippee Ki Yay, mother…” never mind! McClane got into trouble again in 1990, still no Bieber. The third time was the charm for the super cop. In 1995, Die Hard with a Vengeance was released and Justin Bieber was one year old. JB was 13 years old for number four and 19 for the fifth Die Hard in 2012. By this time, Bieber was enjoying the fruits of his labor and living the life of a rock star.

1. Home Alone 1 & 2

For some strange reason, we could picture Justin Bieber, as he is now, in the role of Kevin McAllister, made famous by Macaulay Culkin. Home Alone was released in 1990 and the sequel in 1992. Home Alone is one of those classics that never gets old. While it does air year-round on cable, it is shown a lot more during the winter holidays. There were three more movies in the Home Alone franchise that came out in 1997, 2002, and 2012. Those films were not major theatrical releases and did not star Culkin. Bieber would have been three years old and eight years old for the third and fourth installments. It is likely that Bieber viewed the first four films at some point. He would have been 18 when the last film was released. He was already rich and famous by then so he probably did not see Home Alone: The Holiday Heist. Not many people probably saw that one. We didn’t even know there was a fifth Home Alone.
