Debuting in 1992, Mortal Kombat is a video game franchise developed by Midway Games. Ed Boon and John Tobias, creators of the game, first had an idea of making a game based on Jean-Claude Van Damme. That idea didn’t work out, so after further planning and ideas, the fantasy/horror fighting game came through.
The original Mortal Kombat spun off many sequels and even a television series and a couple of movies. The game is notorious for its bloody violence and “Fatalities.” In the game, a Fatality is a finishing move where the winner of the last fighting round delivers an execution move on the opponent. It was actually partly because of Mortal Kombat that the ESRB video game rating system became a thing.
The original three games and their sequels were all 2D. With the first two, they were usually played in arcades with a joystick and five buttons: high punch, low punch, high kick, low kick and block. After Mortal Kombat 3 and its updates, the games added a sixth “run” button.
The game series takes place in a fictional universe with 18 realms created by the Elder Gods. In the Mortal Kombat: Deception game manual, it discussed six realms: Earthrealm, Netherrealm, Outworld, Seido, Realm of Chaos and Edenia.
As with many video games, movies and the like, fans often dress up as their favorite characters for fun. This is known as cosplaying. In this article we’ll show you the fifteen hottest Mortal Kombat cosplays.
Skarlet was originally rumored to be a glitch in Mortal Kombat II, although others thought it was a programming glitch of Kitana, similar to how Ermac was a color glitch from Scorpion. However, this rumor has since been debunked. She is classified as a Genetic Experiment and was created entirely from blood.
Skarlet is ferocious in battle, and uses a variety of blades for melee and projectiles. She has several blood-related powers like throwing blood projectiles and morphing into a red liquid state of herself and mold into objects. She uses this both for offense and defense.
Skarlet made several appearances in Mortal Kombat 2011’s Story Mode. She is also seen chained up in Kahn’s Coliseum, although she doesn’t have any dialogue or scenes. Although she’s a blood being, in the MKX comic series it’s revealed that Kytinn blood makes her lose energy and become weak.
14. Liu Kang
Liu Kang is one of the seven original characters of Mortal Kombat. He is a Shaolin monk who enters the Mortal Kombat tournament to save Earthrealm. After winning, he became the franchise’s hero as the champion and defender of Earthrealm, guided by his mentor – Raiden, the thunder god.
The character was designed to have special moves that make it easier for gamers to play him. He is the main protagonist in two Mortal Kombat movies, as well as the comic book adaptations by Malibu Comics.
In the game, his main fighting style is Jeet Kune Do, and he has experience with Kung Fu. In the first four tournaments, he became the Grand Champion of Mortal Kombat. In the first game, he was “non-violent” because his finishing move didn’t kill the opponent in a graphic way. But with the second game and onwards, all of his Fatalities are more gory.
A friend of Princess Kitana, Jade served under Shao Kahn with Kitana and Mileena as personal assassins. When Kitana rebelled, Jade’s new job was to capture her and bring her back. Jade chose to follow Kitana to free Edenia.
Now, Jade is a general of the Edenian Army and serves Kitana and her mother Sindel. In Mortal Kombat II, she was a hidden, unplayable character. In order to reach Jade, players have to fight a one-player game on the match before the “?” on the mountain map.
If you win at least one round using only the Low Kick button, you’ll be transported to Goro’s Lair to fight Jade. Players don’t even have to win the whole match to fight her – just one round. In Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 Jade became a regular character. Her main weapon is a metal staff, but she also uses “razorangs” or boomerangs with a razor edge.
12. Johnny Cage
Johnny Cage is a martial artist. He is one of the seven original characters and a recurring character in the series. In the game, he was a struggling action movie star and wanted to get his fame back. He entered the tournament to show off his fighting moves and prove himself to movie critics. Eventually, he became a great defender of Earthrealm.
He was created to look like the stereotypical American action movie star. His clothes were modeled after Jean-Claude Van Damme in Bloodsport. His costume in the first game is a pair of black shorts with a red sash, and black shoes. In MKII–MK4, he has black pants with blue accents. Even though he’s human, he has supernatural abilities. According to MK 2011, he descends from a cult that bred warriors specifically for the gods. Every warrior has special abilities, like strengthening your punches or propelling yourself forward.
Princess Kitana is 10,000 years old, although in her home realm of Edenia she’s considered young, and looks like a young human too. As she grew up she became an important person as the stepdaughter of Shao Kahn. To prevent his rise to power, she rebelled against him, and led an army into Outworld to make sure he didn’t rise again.
Kitana had a slight love interest with Liu Kang, even after he was murdered by the Deadly Alliance. She stayed loyal to Shao Kahn for most of her life, until she found out that her true father was King Jerrod.
In battle, she usually uses her steel fans as weapons, although she’s adept in hand-to-hand combat. She uses her fans as both projectiles and melee weapons, and can even use them to levitate opponents in the air. Kitana is one of the most powerful characters in Mortal Kombat II.
Kano is the leader of the Black Dragon clan, and is one of the original characters. Black Dragon is an international crime cartel. Kano is originally from Australia, and he eventually became a general for Outworld’s armies.
Kano is notorious for his “twisted sense of humor,” and makes jokes about everything. He also has cybernetic body parts. This character combines the features of a cowardly minion, a lone survivor, a crazed madman and a ruthless commander. He is the archenemy of Soyna Blade, who wants to bring Kano to justice.
Kano is an opportunist and only chooses fights in which he has an advantage. He is different than other characters because he likes to rely on weapons instead of special abilities. His signature weapons are butterfly knives, in addition to his eye laser. His special abilities revolve around him rolling himself into a ball and slamming into his opponents.
Mileena is a clone of Kitana. Shang Tsung uses his sorcery to create her for Shao Kahn. She is evil and hates Kitana, and feels that it’s her right to be Princess instead of Kitana. Mileena’s greatest wish is to kill Kitana.
As a half Edenian, half Tarkatan, she has a combination of “beauty and beast.” Mileena fights with great strength, along with acrobatics and agility. Although she doesn’t have as much knowledge of martial arts as Kitana, she can teleport, roll and bite while fighting.
Mileena uses a pair of sai as weapons, and uses them with great skill. Kitana may be more graceful, but Mileena is brutal and vicious, which makes her equally – if not a greater – fighter. She is as skillful with her sai as Kitana is with her fans. In Mortal Kombat 2011 she is surrounded by a pink, flaming aura when using her signature moves.
This Mileena cosplayer isn’t afraid to show some skin and curves, and will probably use that to her advantage. While you’re busy looking at her, ahem, wares, she’ll be putting a dagger through your heart.
An original character, Raiden is the eternal God of Thunder, protector of Earthrealm and one of the most powerful MK characters. After he defeated Shinnok a second time, he was promoted to the status of Elder God.
He usually appears as a man with white robes and a blue vest, and partially hides his face with a straw hat. His eyes glow blue with the power of electricity and he has long white hair. Since he is so powerful, he doesn’t fight very often, usually staying behind the scenes.
Even though he’s a god, he isn’t indestructible. If he enters a realm not native to him, like Outworld, he’ll be stripped of his powers. However, once he returns to Earthrealm, he gets his powers back. Unless he takes on a mortal form, he can’t directly participate in tournaments. In the first Mortal Kombat movie, he was portrayed by Christopher Lambert.
7. Sonya Blade
General Sonya A. Blade is a soldier who used to be a member of Earthrealm’s Special Forces unit called Outer World Investigation Agency (OIA). Now she commands all of the operations of Special Forces and Units. Sonya is an original character and the first female character introduced to the franchise.
She has a feud with Kano, because he killed her former partner as well as being a mercenary. In battle, she fires/manipulates a type of pink-colored energy. Her abilities revolve around agility, using kicks and strikes. In MKX she focuses on hand-to-hand combat, and uses weapons like grenades, and a Drone.
In the first movie she’s portrayed by Bridgette Wilson. During the movie, as she chases Kano she stumbles upon Shang Tsung’s boat, and meets Liu Kang and Johnny Cage. Raiden selects the three of them to represent Earthrealm in the tournament. There, Sonya battles and defeats Kano.
Scorpion is a resurrected ninja and is one of the few characters that appear in every single game. In his former life he was known as Hanzo Hasashi. While living, his father forbade him from joining the Shirai Ryu clan, of which his father was a member. Hanzo joined despite his father to be able to give his wife and son a good life.
However, both his family and clan were eventually killed, so Hanzo became Scorpion to seek revenge on those responsible. He is usually considered the anti-hero of Mortal Kombat. He joins the forces of evil when they promised to resurrect his clan.
Scorpion’s is known for his famous spear attack, which he uses to bring his opponent closer to him, while also stunning them. While using this technique, he shouts, “Get over here!” or “Come here!” When he takes his mask off, he’s known as Inferno Scorpion.
Tanya was first introduced as an innocent, but it was revealed that she was corrupted by evil and worshipped Shinnok, who is the final boss in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero. When Shinnok was defeated, Tanya moved to Shao Kahn, the Deadly Alliance and Onaga.
She is one of the few henchwomen in the game series, and is proud of her extensive knowledge of magic and diplomacy. Because she betrayed the Edenian cause, she became a rival of Jade. Tanya is a strong fighter and relies on her agility and powerful kicks, in addition to her pyrokinesis.
She uses tonfas as weapons to block her opponents’ weapons and bouncing back projectiles. In Mortal Kombat X she can enhance her fireballs with a mysterious dark substance to increase their strength. She also gained a teleport ability, to either escape from attacks or move closer to her opponent.
There are two Sub-Zeros, both brothers. The new Sub-Zero, named Kuai Liang, are descendants of Cryomancers, which is an Outworld race that with the powers of ice. Both brothers were sons of a Cryomancer father and human mother. The father was a secret operative for the Lin Kuei.
He married an American woman and had two sons. Against her wishes, he took the boys to China where they trained as Lin Kuei assassins. The older brother, Bi-Han, was the first Sub-Zero, while Kuai Liang used the codename Tundra. When Scorpion killed Bi-Han in the first tournament, Kuai mastered the powers of Ice and Cold and took on his brother’s codename.
With the powers of ice, Sub-Zero is a formidable opponent. HIs powers include flash-freezing his enemies, and he can even create an ice statue of himself to act as a “landmine.” Anyone who touches it instantly freezes.
Kurtis Stryker is the leader of the Special Riot Control division in the New York Police Department. He uses modern weapons like explosives, guns, tasers and nightsticks when he fights. This gives him an advantage since he mostly has ranged attacks.
Stryker can use his nightstick to propel himself forward towards an opponent. He can also use it to open and close dimensional portals in Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm. The creators of the games originally planned to add a character called Kurtis Stryker in the first game. But instead they created Sonya and created a male fighter in MKII called Jax.
Stryker received a mixed response from fans. Character designer and series co-creator John Tobias thought he would become really popular, but he didn’t. Fans thought his appearance of a regular human looked out of place among the other characters of Mortal Kombat.
Sheeva is of the race Shokan, a race of half-human/half-Dragon beings from Outworld. They are archenemies of the Centaur race. Sheeva was the personal bodyguard of Queen Sindel during Shao Kahn’s attempted invasion of Earthrealm.
Like other Shokan, she is incredibly strong. In battle she can use fireballs and has a teleport stomp attack. Unlike Shokan warriors Goro and Kintaro, she can stomp without teleporting and cause damage instead. Her fireballs are more powerful than other Shokan too.
In contrast with Goro and Kintaro, she wasn’t an unplayable sub-boss until Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. In this game she is the last character to fight before Blaze in the female-only ladder. Like Goro and Kintaro, Sheeva was a stop motion figurine in Mortal Kombat 3 and its updates, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and Mortal Kombat Trilogy. Her signature moves include Death From Above, Searing Blast, Furious Stomp, among others.
Jackson “Jax” Briggs is a cybernetically-enhanced soldier and the leader of the Outer World Investigation Agency. He was first introduced in Mortal Kombat II. Jax is Sonya’s direct superior and balances her impulsiveness. He is calm and clear-headed, but when needed he “is a beast on the battlefield with the attitude and ferocity of a lion.”
He has massive upper body strength, and can easily crush human heads. He uses cybernetic enhancers to boost his strength even more, with bionic armor plating on his arms. He’s also a technician who is in charge of the portal technology that the OIA uses to travel between realms.
His cybernetic arms have portable missiles and a piston mechanism to increase the strength of his punches. Some of Jax’s signature moves include an energy wave, ground pound, gotcha grab, and a dash punch where he lunges forward to punch an opponent.
If less is more, this cosplayer has it all. He certainly has the muscles to back up his Jax interpretation, and looks ready for battle.
