Next year, we will see the release of the movie we have all been waiting for for 10 long years. The epic battle between Thanos and the entire Marvel Universe will happen in Avengers: Infinity War. After dozens of post credits scenes, three whole phases, and 18 record-breaking movies, we will finally see every Marvel superhero duke it out against a virtual cosmic god. All the Avengers will be there, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and even Spider-Man, too. It will be Thanos against the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe roster, but he will still have the upper hand, thanks to the infinity gauntlet.
Of course, a fight of this grand scale means that not everyone is getting out of there alive. There will be plenty of casualties and some heroes will very likely meet their ends. The chances that more than a few Avengers will die are quite high. Avengers: Age of Ultron showed Tony Stark having a vision where all the Avengers die at the hand of Thanos and his infinity gauntlet. I’m sure not everyone will die. How could Disney rake in more money if every Marvel character was dead? With contracts set to expire, you should expect at least one hero to not make it out alive. Here’s a look at the 15 Marvel Cinematic Universe characters who will most likely die in Avengers: Infinity War.
16. Black Widow
Even though there has been a fair amount of talk about Black Widow getting her own solo movie, the chances are still pretty low. However, would Marvel really kill off the first and most prolific female superhero to grace the big screen? Black Widow was proving she was a bada*s long before Wonder Woman, but would Marvel really want to be without a female hero in a world almost entirely dominated by men?
Well, with Captain Marvel right around the corner, I would say that Black Widow dying is very likely. It would be very heartbreaking considering Black Widow’s new relationship with Bruce Banner, but you can be sure that the chances of Black Widow dying are very high. I would say the odds are about 2 to 1.
Hawkeye is the definition of expendable. He has had a limited role in the MCU to date, and despite an expanded role in Avengers: Age of Ultron, the likelihood of him ever getting his own solo movie is very low. He is simply not that popular of a character. Jeremy Renner has been playing Hawkeye since 2011, so that fact combined with the fact that Hawkeye is mostly a side character, means the likelihood that Hawkeye won’t be in any future Avengers movies after Infinity War is very high.
There are simply too many new and more intriguing characters that can be Avengers team members in the future, including Captain Marvel to Black Panther. The odds of Hawkeye being killed by Thanos are very high. After all, what chance does a guy who shoots arrows have against a god? Hawkeye even admits that himself.
14. Dr. Strange
When Dr. Strange dies, it’s not really any dust off of his back, is it? How many times did the Sorcerer Supreme die in the Dr. Strange movie? Was it 1,000 times? Was it 1,000,000 times? Maybe it was as much as a billion times? When he faced off against Dormammu, Dr. Strange used a time loop to trap himself together with the evil inter-dimensional being. Dormammu killed Dr. Strange over and over.
Time travel and spells could very well play a large role in Avengers: Infinity War. Dr. Strange likely won’t stay dead for very long, but the chances of him dying and then coming back to life are fairly high. Maybe every Avenger will be killed and Strange will use a time travel spell to reverse the damage. The odds of Dr. Strange dying are about 3 to 1.
Thanos probably won’t die in the first part of the next Avengers movie, but the plan is to still split the film into two parts. Next summer will see the release of Avengers: Infinity War, and then, in summer 2019, there will be yet another Avengers film, although it’s still untitled at the moment. Thanos may be the big bad guy in this yet untitled 2019 film as well. Since basically all villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been killed from Iron Monger all the way up to Ego the Living Planet, I’d say the chances are pretty high that Thanos bites the cosmic bullet in one of the upcoming Avengers films.
Don’t worry, though. If Thanos dies, then he can finally be with his everlasting love, Death. After all, the whole reason he wants to take over the universe is to court Death. Since Loki is one of the few Marvel Cinematic Universe villains to survive, I would place the odds of Thanos dying in Avengers: Infinity War or its followup fairly high at about 5 to 1.
Heimdall may be nearly all-seeing and all-knowing, but that doesn’t mean he would see his own death coming. If Heimdall makes it through Thor: Ragnarok (he will because Idris Elba is in Avengers: Infinity War), then the chances that he will die in Infinity War are pretty high. He’s a secondary character and that means he’s fairly expendable.
The soul gem has still not been revealed in the MCU, and there is speculation that Heimdall might have it. If that’s the case, then it means that he may die when Thanos tries to retrieve the Infinity Gem. The chances of Heimdall dying are about 7 to 1.
11. Nick Fury
Nick Fury has been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for as long as almost anybody. The first movie that he appeared in was Iron Man in 2008. Since then, he has appeared in almost half of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. Could Nick Fury be killed in Avengers: Infinity War? We shouldn’t expect to see a Nick Fury movie anytime soon, so I’d say the chances he could die are quite high.
Fury already has a replacement in Maria Hill, and since the Avengers are no longer connected to SHIELD, then the chances of Nick Fury dying creep even higher. He’s not the one most likely to be killed by Thanos, though, but his lack of powers combined with the very long time that Nick Fury has already been a part of the MCU make him a very likely candidate to meet his end in Avengers: Infinity War. Put the odds at about 7 to 1.
Could Nebula bite the dust so soon after turning from evil to good? Thanos certainly can’t be happy about her betrayal. Now that she is a hero and member of the Guardians of the Galaxy alongside her sister, Gamora, it’s very possible that she will be killed by her father in Avengers: Infinity War. A Guardian dies in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, so it’s possible another could meet his or her end in Avengers: Infinity War.
We know it won’t be one of the main heroes like Star Lord or Rocket, but Nebula could easily be killed off. With so many new Guardians of the Galaxy team members just introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the chances of Nebula dying go way up. I’d say the likelihood of Nebula dying is about 7 to 1.
How could someone as powerful as the Vision possibly die? After all, he is perhaps the strongest superhero in the entire Marvel Universe. However, you have to remember that Vision has an infinity gem lodged in is forehead, and for Thanos to complete his infinity gauntlet, he needs that gem.
Spoilerish set pictures of Avengers: Infinity War revealed Vision in human form embracing Scarlet Witch. It’s possible these shots are simply pre-visual effects, but if Vision does indeed turn human, then that makes him all the more susceptible to dying at the hands of Thanos. The likelihood of Vision dying is about 7 to 1, thanks to Thanos needing to get his hands on the mind stone.
8. Scarlet Witch
Scarlet Witch is just getting the hang of using her powers. She is still fairly inexperienced. Despite being one of the most powerful superheroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, she is still susceptible to meeting her end. Scarlet Witch and Vision have a very close relationship.
She could theoretically sacrifice herself to save Vision, or Thanos could kill her if she was trying to protect Vision. Marvel probably has bigger plans for Scarlet Witch in the future, but she could die just like her brother did in Avengers: Age of Ultron. I’d say the odds of her dying in Avengers: Infinity War are about 8 to 1.
7. Captain America
Chris Evans’ contract is drawing to a close. There is certainly a chance he might extend it, but in many recent interviews, he has expressed doubt about staying in the MCU after the two upcoming Avengers movies. He has already starred in 3 solo Captain America movies and two Avengers movies. On top of that, there are the two upcoming Infinity War movies and cameos in Thor: The Dark World and Spider-Man: Homecoming. Since the death of Steve Rogers is a very prevalent storyline in the comics, I think the chances that Cap will be killed in Infinity War or its followup are extremely high.
There are already two replacements waiting in the wing with Falcon (no pun intended) and Bucky Barnes, aka the Winter Soldier. Either one of them could become the next Captain America just like they have in the comics. The odds on this are 2 to 1.
6. The Collector
The Collector still has one of the infinity gems, which was given to him at the end of Thor: The Dark World during an after-credits sequence. If the Collector still has the reality stone, then Thanos will certainly come looking for it. That doesn’t bode well for the Collector. However, the Collector takes great pride in his collection and he won’t give it up with a fight. He is an Elder of the Universe, so it’s not like he will be a complete pushover against Thanos.
It’s unlikely that the collector will even want to make a deal with Thanos or trade something. He wants to have as large a collection of items as he can, and he clearly wants to have the infinity stones for himself. In Guardians of the Galaxy, he was after the orb, aka the power stone. Thanos will likely have to take the reality stone by force and that could lead to the Collector’s death. The chances of the Collector dying in Avengers: Infinity War are 6 to 1.
Groot is another one of those characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe whose death doesn’t really mean that much. Sure, Groot dying can be emotional, but it probably won’t be permanent. Since Groot is basically immortal, the chances of him dying yet again in Avengers: Infinity War are pretty high. Groot can regenerate from a tiny piece of his body. We saw him as a tiny baby after he was killed in Guardians of the Galaxy, and by the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, he was already a teenager.
By the time Avengers: Infinity War comes out, it is very likely that Groot will be full-grown. While he is powerful, Thanos could still easily kill him. You shouldn’t worry because Groot will definitely be back even if he dies again at the hands of the Mad Titan and his infinity gauntlet. The chances of Groot dying in Avengers: Infinity War are about 4 to 1.
Wong is another one of those very expendable side characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which makes it very likely that he could die at the hands of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. He may be the sidekick of Dr. Strange, but that doesn’t mean he won’t die. Maybe even the time-altering and reality-altering powers of Dr. Strange won’t be enough to save Wong.
There are over 20 heroes and side characters in Avengers: Infinity War, and some of them have to die. There are even new characters being introduced in Avengers: Infinity War. Wong’s days in the Marvel Cinematic Universe could easily be numbered. As we saw in the Dr. Strange movie, characters associated with Dr. Strange can easily die. The Ancient One dies in that movie, so maybe Wong will die in Avengers: Infinity War. Dr. Strange has one of the infinity stones in the Sanctum Sanctorum. The Eye of Agamotto is the time stone, and Thanos will come looking for it. Could Wong die trying to stop Thanos from retrieving the eye of Agamotto? The chances of Wong dying in Avengers: Infinity War are 4 to 1.
3. Iron Man
No character has been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as long as Iron Man has. Iron Man kicked off the Marvel Cinematic universe in 2008, and Avengers: Infinity War will be released ten years to the day that the first iron man movie came out. Ten years is a long time to be playing one character, so the chances that this might be the end for Robert Downey Jr. are high. Someone else could take over playing Iron Man, but there will never be another Tony Stark. Marvel is already paving the way to make Spider-Man the new face of the Marvel Cinematic Universe once Robert Downey Jr. leaves. The chances of Iron Man dying in Avengers: Infinity War are 3 to 1.
Would Marvel really have the guts to kill off the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most popular villain? Well, now that Thanos will finally be introduced, this only means that there is a new number one bad guy in the Marvel Universe. That spells doom for Tom Hiddleston’s Loki. What’s worse it that the Tesseract, which contains the space stone, is being held in Asgard.
Since Loki is now secretly the ruler of Asgard (that might change in Thor: Raganrok), it stands a very good chance that Thanos will come to Asgard looking for that infinity stone. As powerful as Loki is, he still wouldn’t stand a chance against Thanos. Thanos will also not be pleased about being betrayed by Loki in the first Avengers film. Loki was supposed to deliver Thanos the tesseract, but he didn’t. It’s also possible that we see Loki abandon his evil ways and join the heroes to try and defeat an invading Thanos. The chances of Loki dying in Avengers: Infinity War are 3 to 1.
As the most hated daughter of Thanos, Gamora (from Guardians of the Galaxy) may easily become just another casualty in Avengers: Infinity War. Thanos would have no problem killing his own daughter to take over the universe, and the pair have been at odds with each other for basically their entire lives. Thanos would likely show no mercy to Gamora, and she likely won’t be able to defeat the Mad Titan. I’d say that the chances of Gamora dying in Avengers: Infinity War are about 4 to 1.
