The reasons we love cosplaying and seeing cosplay can really be broken down into two parts—the interest in the creativity and the interest in seeing some of our favorite fictional characters lived out. There’s a third element that often comes into play. Cosplay is at its best when its done by sexy women. As the love of cosplaying has grown, we’ve seen more and more television shows and films try it out. We realize that many cosplayers consider a difference between cosplay and Halloween. But for the sake of this list, we won’t make a distinction. As long as the costume is of a fictional character, we’ll count it.
Television shows and films have very healthy wardrobe budgets and very talented people working behind the scenes. We’ve seen some really creative work in the past, but we’re mostly interested in the really sexy ones. On this list, we have some creatively sexy costumes and some rather generic costumes worn by incredibly sexy actresses. Each have a special place in our heart. There’s something special about a woman in costume. When that woman is a gorgeous actress, it makes it even more special. So we’ve gone through and found the hottest costumes that have ever shown up in film and on TV. Now, because this is cosplay, you won’t find any sexy cat costumes or random witches. There are a couple that aren’t of fictional characters, but we will deal with the few outliers individually when we get to them. If you ever wondered what the best examples of cosplay on film and TV are, you’re about to find out. Here are the 15 Hottest Cosplays in TV and Film History.
15. Slave Leia
The Slave Leia costume is one of the most iconic costumes in film history. It’s an image that was ingrained in the imaginations of men and women everywhere. For that reason, sexy characters in both TV and film have recreated it a number of times. We want to mention Rachel’s (Jennifer Aniston‘s) version from Friends because, while it was amazing seeing Rachel show that much skin, she got the hair entirely wrong. Leia wears a ponytail not buns when she’s a slave. The two that jump out as the sexiest for us are Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski) from Chuck and Zoe (Kristen Bell) from the film Fanboys. Strahovski’s version of the costume isn’t quite exact as her bottom is essentially a skirt, but it’s Yvonne Strahovski for crying out loud. Bell’s version is much closer to the movie version with openings on either side of the bottom to show off her legs. She’s also got the chain necklace which was a nice touch. Both, however, would be perfectly suitable for almost any Star Wars fan’s fantasy.
Superwoman is one of the most recognizable superheroes of all time and she’s a woman. When it comes to female cosplay, there may be no bigger costume than Wonder Woman. Surprisingly, however, not many TV or film characters have done it well. There is one and it may be the most surprising entry on this list—Phoebe from Friends. In one of the Friends Halloween episodes, Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) shows up dressed as Superwoman and she looks remarkable. She’s got an astounding body, so the Superwoman outfit lends itself well to her shape. Because of how silly her character is, Kudrow is sometimes the forgotten beauty on the show. But, every once in a while, we’re reminded of how hot she really is. This may not be the best she ever looks on the show, but it’s definitely up there.
13. Mya Wallace
We’re not big fans of the Scream TV show, but we’re massive fans of Pulp Fiction and any time we get to see someone cosplay Mya Wallace (Uma Thurman) from that film, we get jazzed up. The character in Scream who dons the outfit, Emma Duval (Willa Fitzgerald), is attractive but not in the knock-your-socks off kind of way. Yet, when she puts on the Mya look, she looks a bit more mysterious and edgy. This is a big contrast to her goodie-to-shoes look that she normally puts out, so maybe that’s where the bulk of the attraction comes from. Or maybe it’s the black hair. Yeah, that’s almost certainly it. For such a popular costume, you would think we would see it more often on TV, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.
It’s difficult to make Smurfette look sexy without making the outfit scandalous, but Emma Roberts does a pretty impressive job of it in Scream Queens. Forced to make due with having blue skin, Roberts’ character, Chanel, decides to dress up as Smurfette and she pulls it off in a very modest way. People get a little freaked out when they feel attracted to aliens or women with blue or green skin in films and on television, but we can get behind this look. Roberts’ blonde hair really pops against that light blue skin too. Compared to every other entry on this list, this one is just so different. It felt right.
11. The Fairy Tale Characters
There’s not really a good single category for the unbelievably sexy costumes in the greatest Halloween movie of all time, Trick ‘r Treat, but…oh well. The four young women chose the sexiest costumes they can find for their Halloween party and they did a splendid job. From most sexy to least sexy, we have Rochelle Aytes as Snow White, Moneca Delain as Little Bo Peep, Lauren Lee Smith as Cinderella and Anna Paquin as Little Red Riding Hood. If you’ve never seen this movie, it’s worth it for only these women’s story because their scenes are just about the sexiest scenes you’ll ever set eyes on. With these costumes, the four seductresses ensure that they’ll be able to find dates, which actually could have worked against them. Dressed the way they are, they’re almost too attractive, too intimidating for any average person to feel comfortable near to.
10. The Girl/Marilyn Monroe
Billy Wilder’s Seven Year Itch will always be known for creating one of the most memorable movie scenes and stills of all time—Marilyn Monroe‘s skirt blowing up while standing over a subway grate. Everyone remembers the white dress she wore, an outfit that’s become synonymous with Monroe herself. This is one of the more popular cosplays and Halloween costumes for women (especially blondes) so it’s no surprise that many different shows and films have recreated it. The two best, in our opinion, were given to us by Hannah (Ashley Benson) in Pretty Little Liars and Ashley (Elisha Cuthbert) in Happy Endings. Both of these women are two of the most beautiful blondes in the world, so associating them with Monroe isn’t too far-fetched. We won’t step out and say which is better because they both crushed it out of the park.
9. The Rocky Horror Gang
Say what you will about Halloween 2, the Rob Zombie version from 2009, but the Rocky Horror Picture Show costumes that the three friends wear to their party are mind-blowingly good. Laurie (Scout Taylor-Compton) as Magenta, Mya (Brea Grant) as Columbia and Harley (Angela Trimbur) as Frank N. Furter all head off to a Halloween party looking incredible as ever. Even though Laurie is the head honcho, her friends are the ones that really steal the show. Mya (Grant) is by far the best looking of the bunch, so her costume didn’t even have to be all that great for her to look good. Still, it’s movie-prop quality. Harley’s (Trimbur) Frank N. Furter costume is seriously the best version of that costume we’ve ever seen. She looks just like Tim Curry, but she’s still really sexy. It’s both revealing and exactly the same as the movie version. It’s actually an unsettling experience being attracted to her because you’re not sure which elements you even like. Brava gals!
8. Princess Fiona
If this list was about the best costumes or even sexiest costumes on TV, Gloria (Sofia Vergara) from Modern Family would be a multiple entrant. However, most of her costumes on the show are just random witches and things like that. She spices them up in her own Gloria way, but they need to be fictional characters to be considered here. In one of the Halloween episodes, though, she dressed up as Princess Fiona from Shrek, and we loved it. Anyone who’s attracted to beautiful things would love this. There’s a nearly perfect Vergara that allows her to steal our breath away. The low-cut top and slim-fitting long green dress, really let the viewer get to know her personality better as well, which were nice touches.
7. Raggedy Ann
It takes a special kind of woman to make a Raggedy Ann costume look sexy, but we have two TV characters who did it with ease. Perhaps the most amazing part of it all is that neither costume was revealing. The women just looked beautiful in them. The first is Ashley Benson, who really could have been on this list in like four different places (she does receive another mention). Benson was in the TV show Eastwick when she was 19 and dressed up in a very modest Raggedy Ann outfit. Still, she really nailed it. Our favorite of all has to be Ann’s (Rashida Jones) version from Parks and Recreation. It would take a whole lot of effort to make Jones look anything less than incredible, so we don’t know if this entry is even fair. Maybe she’s more cute than sexy in the costume, but it doesn’t matter.
6. Wonder Woman
Wonder Woman is a character that so many beautiful women dress up as each year. On TV and film, we’ve seen some really amazing examples and some questionable ones. When Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel) donned the classic outfit in Bones, she looked good, but she couldn’t quite match our two favorites. For second place, we look to Penny in The Big Bang Theory. Everyone loves Penny and she loves revealing outfits, so “she” and the Wonder Woman costume were a pleasant match for everyone involved. Even though Penny (Kaley Cuoco) knocked it out of the park, she was unable to outdo Erica Durance in the costume. In a small guest starring role in the short-lived show Harry’s Law, Durance wears two different versions of the suit, and she looks stunning in both. To be fair, her costumes were of a much higher quality than Penny’s, so that could have had something to do with it. That’s all part of it.
5. Madonna’s “Virgin”
Even though this isn’t a fictional character, necessarily, Madonna‘s iconic performance of “Like a Virgin” was a historic moment in fashion. Wearing a low-cut white wedding gown, covered in necklaces and wearing a belt that read “boy toy,” Madonna created a look that was more 80’s than the mullet. It became a character all on its own. Well, in Veronica Mars, Kristen Bell recreated this character, flipping the look to black to match Madonna’s favorite color and style in the decade. More than being a cool outfit, which it already is, Bell just looks super sexy. The crimped hair, the necklaces, the lace, Bell makes us feel like the 80’s was better than it ever was. She’s also a two-time entrant on the list, which means we apparently really like her.
4. Mother Teresa
OK, so Mother Teresa isn’t a fictional character, but she’s a character and her squeaky clean image is renowned by many. Besides, not including Haley (Sarah Hyland) from Modern Family on this list didn’t seem fair to humanity. Every Halloween episode on the show, Haley goes out of her way to look great for us, but they’re always just generic professions or things, like cats, the overdone costumes we’ve tried to avoid. Her take on Mother Teresa was both honorable and heart-stopping. Modern Family really brings out the best of Halloween. We get amazing decorations, a passion for the holiday, fun costumes, and Gloria and Haley parading around in the skimpiest outfits available. It’s a winning combination really.
Elvira, Mistress of the Dark is one of those classic horror comedies that we never see enough of anymore. Cassandra Peterson took this sexy character and made it into one of the biggest s*x symbols in horror. Now Elvira is already sexy. So, when someone cosplays as the character, they don’t need to spice it up much. There is one way to up the ante though. Having an actress as incredibly looking as Alyssa Milano take it on adds a little something to the look. That’s what happened in Charmed, when Phoebe (Milano) wore the costume in the episode “All Halliwell’s Eve.” Charmed was actually one of the better shows for Halloween episodes. This show and its characters could have been on this more than once if we weren’t trying so hard to avoid duplicates.
If you’re a fan of Halloween or cosplaying, Pretty Little Liars might be the show that does the best job of it. Each season, the show and its gorgeous stars go all-out with their costumes. Like Charmed, the girls from Pretty Little Liars could have been on this list several times each. We did think Emily’s Barbarella was by far the best of the bunch, so she’ll represent the group for the most part. We will give an honorable mention to her Pocahontas costume as well. Even though the costume might be a little bit of a faux pas, she looked dang good being culturally insensitive. Back to the Barbarella cosplay, though. Emily (Shay Mitchell) doesn’t have to do much to look amazing, but wearing a skintight revealing outfit made famous by one of the biggest s*x symbols of the 60’s doesn’t hurt.
1. Little Red Riding Hood
In all of TV and film, Little Red Riding Hood might be the most popular character to cosplay. It can be worn traditionally or in the most revealing fashion. Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) from Buffy the Vampire Slayer has worn it, Annie (Allison Brie) from Community looked beautiful in her version, and several other stunning actresses have done the same. But we believe there are only two that really stand out the most, at least in terms of sexiness. One is Faye (Phoebe Tonkin) from the show Secret Circle. Really, the only thing she did that Annie or Buffy didn’t was wear a more revealing top. Technically, she’s just wearing a black top with a cape and pigtails, but we don’t care. She’s absolutely gorgeous. The other and probably the best of all, is Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) from True Blood. Woll is unbelievably sexy in normal gear. Her costume benefits from her red hair and the lingerie style outfit. Her in that getup might be the single greatest image ever shown on TV.
