With Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them upon us, another talented and fresh-faced cast has joined the ranks of the infamous Harry Potter universe. The realization that the first book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was released in 1997, and its companion movie of the same name was released shortly after, will never not make us feel old. It’s either a miracle or incredible casting directors that led to the hire of a bunch of child stars who were able to hold their own on screen, and who became cultural icons for years to come.
And ever since those clumsy pre-teen actors (along with aging award-winning industry veterans) stumbled onto the screen, the world has watched them grow up and grow in their acting. And for years, the cast has made it onto lists of the hottest actors, but with new life breathed into the franchise, these lists are in sore need of an update. Read on to take a peek at our picks of the hottest actors from the Harry Potter franchise.
15. Katherine Waterston
Katherine Waterston shines in the newest edition to the Harry Potter world, playing Porpentina Goldstein, simply called ‘Tina’ by her friends and ‘Goldstein’ by her employers, the higher-ups at MaCUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America). Katherine plays a stiff try-hard at the beginning of the movie, working against the obvious protagonist, Newt Scamander. It’s clear there’s chemistry hiding beneath their initially contentious interactions, however.
Waterston fits the 1920s vibe well, and is a picture of elegance and poise throughout the film. Her career arc has been a steady, hard-fought climb toward more commercially viable projects. A big break for her came in 2014’s Inherent Vice, although she had put her time in with the industry leading up to that casting. We hope that Waterston’s rise continues, and that we’ll get to see more of her in the future.
14. Alison Sudol
If you’re an indie music fan, chances are you’ve heard Alison Sudol’s voice, even if you don’t recognize her name. Under the name A Fine Frenzy, Sudol has reached thousands of listeners already in songs of heartache and freedom. Now, she’ll reach thousands more viewers as Queenie in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Playing opposite the more obvious comic relief role of Jacob Kowalski, played by Dan Fogler, Queenie exudes energy and joy in every scene, while saving the day on numerous occasions. The sister of Katherine Waterston’s Tina, Queenie has the extraordinary ability to read minds, which makes her alluring nature all the more irresistible to the characters in the movie.
We were stunned by Sudol’s performance, as she took the entire movie up to the next level. She added verve and spunk and sexiness to a movie that sorely needed it. While it’s not Sudol’s first film, it’s her most commercially successful one by far, and it promises many more in her future.
13. Bonnie Wright
Bonnie Wright was with the Harry Potter franchise from its start, appearing in the films as Ginny Weasley, whom we first meet, albeit briefly, in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Wright stepped into her own as the character, playing her arc with a lot of grace and attentiveness. Ginny had a lot of complexities, starting with her possession by Tom Riddle in The Chamber of Secrets and ending with her powerful stand against the Dark Lord’s followers juxtaposed with her romantic relationship with Harry.
Wright became an on-screen sensation. Auburn hair, blue eyes, and a slight frame made for a striking image. Since the Harry Potter movies, Wright has found work in a number of less commercial roles in both acting and voice-acting capacities. The beautiful woman will always be remembered for being part of the Weasley clan, but she will surely continue to make a big impression on the industry.
12. Carmen Ejogo
Carmen Ejogo joined the cast of Fantastic Beasts on the tail of the huge critical success of Selma, in which she played the iconic Coretta Scott King. Ejogo plays the president of the aforementioned MaCUSA, Seraphine Piquery. She holds stately presence throughout, and acts for what she sees as the betterment of the community, whether or not that mission runs contrary to the other protagonists in the movie. In Piquery’s fitted hat and thick curls of bleached hair, Ejogo cuts a stately, yet captivating presence.
Ejogo’s career onscreen began almost 25 years ago, presenting a children’s series in the United Kingdom. Her career has only blossomed from there, landing roles on big television shows like Kidnapped and Law and Order, as well as finding parts in commercially successful movies like The Purge: Anarchy. In 2017, audiences will find Ejogo, alongside Fantastic Beasts co-star Katherine Waterston, in Alien: Covenant. The movie is studded with high-rollers in the industry such as Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace, and promises to be another huge boost to Ejogo’s career.
11. Clémence Poésy
Clémence Poésy was born in Paris, and landed her first roles in French television shows while still a teenager. While enjoying a full career before finding a spot in the fourth installment of the Harry Potter series, the character of Fleur Delacour acted as a springboard for other roles. Poésy has had high profile roles in other films as well, from In Bruges to 127 Hours, but is still recognizable for playing the aloof but talented witch from a visiting wizardry school. Delacour is chosen as her school’s champion for the Triwizard Tourney, during which she competes against the series’ titular character, among other talented contestants. Poésy paints the character’s bravery and compassion with a touch of arrogance.
Poésy has a natural beauty, and has told reporters she doesn’t like wearing makeup. With silvery blonde hair, soft features, and nearly unmatchable grace on screen, Poésy made the cut for our list of hottest Harry Potter actors and actresses.
10. Alfred Enoch
Alfred Enoch is hardly recognizable these days, and is one of the few on this list that is probably better known for later roles rather than his spot in Harry Potter’s posse. In his supporting role as Dean Thomas, Enoch was not recognized as a mega hottie, but more of a baby-faced background character who never propelled the plot in a significant way, while still being likeable and recognizable.
Enoch has evolved into a star, with a lean body and handsome face, with acting chops to match. Best known currently for his starring role in the Viola Davis-fronted show How to Get Away with Murder, Enoch has also appeared in other well-received shows such as Sherlock and Mount Pleasant. It’s indubitable that Enoch will continue to get a fair share of screen time, especially with that dapper smile.
9. Evanna Lynch
Perhaps a more polarizing pick for the list, Evanna Lynch made her start in the Harry Potter universe as Luna Lovegood, a bizarre but loveable character, famous for her otherworldly eyes, odd fashion, and surprising wisdom. Since simultaneously befuddling and charming audiences as a teen star, Lynch has grown into a beauty, with long blonde hair and deep blue eyes. While Lynch has kept working steadily, none of her more recent projects have come close to matching the commercial success of Harry Potter.
As a child, Lynch wrote to Harry Potter author JK Rowling, numerous times about wishing to act in a movie at some point, and how she felt a bit hopeless because of coming from a small town. To her surprise, Rowling wrote an encouraging note back. Years later, Lynch beat out 15,000 other girls for the part of Luna. Due to her perfect portrayal of the character, we’re sure glad she stuck with her dream.
8. Eddie Redmayne
With a charming smile and a carefree demeanor, Eddie Redmayne has won the hearts of many. The star of the new Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Redmayne is hardly a stranger to the big screen, or to leading roles. In the last few years, he’s shown himself to be a chameleon as an actor, through portrayals of such diverse characters as one of the most famous physicists of all time (Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything), an evil galactic lord (in the absurd and far-fetched Jupiter Ascending), a transgender pioneer in The Danish Girl, and a romantic activist in Les Miserables.
Redmayne’s look is a specific one, but his talent makes him all the more attractive. In Fantastic Beasts, he plays the idealistic dreamer Newt Scamander, who carries with him a suitcase of impossibly amazing beasts from all across the globe. While he inevitably runs into trouble carrying such a thing, it’s hard to ignore Redmayne’s charm, wit, or talent in the role, which earns him ninth place on our list.
7. Jade Gordon
Only the most committed of Harry Potter fans will catch what role Jade Gordon had in the films. Perhaps more well-known for a long and only recently ended romance with another Harry Potter star, Tom Felton, Gordon has played a part in many films, but rarely on screen. Her appearance in the franchise came in the last minutes of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II, when a flash-forward scene depicts the main characters all grown up and sending their kids off on their own adventures at Hogwarts. Gordon plays Malfoy’s wife, Astoria Greengrass, in the brief scene.
Most of Gordon’s work is credited as being a stunt worker or film assistant. She’s made her mark in films like Risen and Edge of Tomorrow. We can’t help but notice Gordon’s similarities in appearance to Edge of Tomorrow‘s star Emily Blunt, in almost every way. Gordon has a natural elegance and athleticism to her, and we hope to see more of her in future films.
6. Tom Felton
Speaking of Jade Gordon, let’s move along to her on-screen hubby and off-screen longtime lover, Tom Felton. While one of the most hated characters in the movies for much of Harry Potter‘s run in his role as the ambitious and malicious Draco Malfoy, Felton is treated much more lovingly outside of the role. Blonde hair, blue eyes, and an easy smile make Felton a quick favorite among the ladies.
Felton has stayed quite busy since his time with the folks at Harry Potter. Appearing in other commercially successful films like Rise of the Planet of the Apes, as well as popular TV shows like The Flash have boosted his career even more, and perhaps helped rinse the unpleasant taste that his time as the sneering Malfoy left with us.
5. Afshan Azad
Since her success portraying Padma Patil in the final four installments of the Harry Potter franchise, Afshan Azad has become an Instagram star. Since fighting with Dumbledore’s Army, Azad hasn’t been active in the film scene. However, that doesn’t mean she’s stayed out of the public’s eye. Showing off impressive makeup techniques done to perfection, Azad has found a platform to show off her insane good looks. Stunning eyes, a sassy smile, and a perfect complexion make her Instagram a must-follow.
4. Dave Legeno
While his studio pics are reminiscent of Jason Statham or some other Hollywood hunk, Dave Legeno had a much less glamorous role in the Harry Potter films. Having trouble placing him still? Does the name Fenrir Greyback, mean anything to you? Yup, this strapping guy was covered in hair and prosthetics for his villainous role as the werewolf in the last three films of the Harry Potter series. While hardly a stunner in his get-up in the movies, Legeno makes an impression outside of that context.
Tragically, Legeno was found dead near Zabriskie Point in Death Valley by a pair of hikers. According to medical professionals, he had been dead for days by the time he was found, and had probably passed from heat-related causes. Legeno was an MMA fighter, and his work in movies goes beyond his stint with the Rowling films, as he placed numerous supporting roles in other films, starting with 2000’s Snatch.
3. Zoe Kravitz
Zoe Kravitz? In the Harry Potter universe? You bet! While probably slipping past many viewers’ eyes, Kravitz is part of the cast for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, playing perhaps the smallest role of any of the named characters as Leta Lestrange. Lestrange appears solely in a quick shot of a photograph, which Queenie questions Newt Scamander about. It would have been easy to use a less known actress or model for the photo, so it seems likely that the director is setting the audience up to expect more from Kravitz in future films.
Kravitz has become a rising star in the industry, as she’s landed parts in installments of some of the most successful commercial franchises of the decade, such as X-Men, Divergent, Mad Max and now, Harry Potter. While mostly absent from Fantastic Beasts, Kravitz brings an energy and vivaciousness to the camera. Her steely gaze, gritty attitude, and amazing body earn her our number three spot on this list.
2. Matthew Lewis
The term ‘Longbottoming’ didn’t come from thin air. It came from this guy, Matthew Lewis, who started off as the bumbling though loveable Neville Longbottom. While initially incompetent, frozen by fear in tense situations, and not always the most helpful guy to have around, Neville was a favorite character of many. Matthew Lewis pulled off the clumsy, awkward character for a while, until, well, until Lewis got pretty darn hot. In the end, Neville plays a more heroic role in the storyline, and Lewis pulled off the smooth, showy side of his grown-up character well.
While Lewis has landed recurring roles on multiple television shows since becoming Neville Longbottom in 2001, he is probably currently most famous for his unbelievable physical transformation, which has earned him a devout social media following.
1. Emma Watson
Well, here it is. The number one pick that everyone saw coming and no one’s surprised by, but we simply couldn’t pick anyone but the inimitable Emma Watson. From scholar to actress to women’s rights ambassador, Watson has become one of the most famous faces of her generation. And it all began with the bushy-haired and bossy Hermione Granger, who saved her exasperating schoolmates from trouble again and again throughout the books and movies, and who grew into a gorgeous young woman.
Watson has landed huge roles since Harry Potter, in films such as The Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Colony, Noah, and the soon-to-be-released live action remake of Beauty and the Beast. We can think of no better fit for the beautiful Belle of Disney fame. Emma Watson, it was a privilege to watch your meteoric rise.
