Sexy sells. Big social media presence sells. Take a young, hot model or singer or Playboy bunny, and you can be certain movies and TV will come calling. Throw in a big social media presence and you can be doubly certain Hollywood will be on their doorstep. The likes of veteran actors like Emma Thompson and Michael Caine have taken up arms against the trend of casting “celebrities” with large social media followings in films. But, financially, it totally makes sense. Say you are a hot young model with 34 million followers on Instagram and they are casting, say, Suicide Squad. Hey, the backroom boys say, let’s get Cara Delevingne in to play Enchantress. Can she act, somebody says. No, the head guy says, but who cares? She’s got a great engagement rate (likes/shares per post) on Instagram. Casting a reboot of Baywatch? Pam Anderson’s way too old to do it. So, let’s get Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue Rookie of the Year Kelly Rohrbach in to play C.J. Parker. She’ll look great in a bikini. Charlize Theron has recently complained that “pretty girls” in Hollywood get shoved aside when the really meaty roles in quality films are cast. Maybe that’s true, but if you are Kelly Rohrbach or Cara Delevingne, say, and you are a model/actress (in that order), you’ll take what parts come your way; keep on strutting that catwalk and not take the acting thing all that seriously.
It’s all about being rich and famous. Here are 15 hotties under 30 with sex appeal and maybe great social media stats who can’t act. Does Hollywood care? What do you think?
15. Kelly Rohrbach
Okay. She’s got a degree from Georgetown University and she’s no dummy. She hit Hollywood, got a few small parts on TV shows playing a buxom blonde in shows like Two and a Half Men, but didn’t make much of a splash until she started modeling, as in 2015 Rookie of the Year in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. Then came Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and the big budget reboot of that iconic 80s beach TV show, Baywatch. The filmmakers were looking for a Pam Anderson-like busty blonde to play C.J. Parker. Kelly Rohrbach had to see off curvy English model/actresses Kelly Brook and Kate Upton to get the role. Apparently the girls had to read for The Rock and, at the end of the day, Kelly got the nod. And we can certainly see the main reason why. Can she act? On a good day, just about. But she looks like a treat running down that beach. Lots of bounce, all over.
14. Cara Delevingne
Cara Delevingne is a hot probably bi-sexual model known for her strut on the catwalk, her party hard determination, and her jetset lifestyle. She has been linked to hunks like Prince Harry and Harry Styles. The current gossip is that she is engaged to her girlfriend, singer St. Vincent. And she’s got 34 million followers on Instagram. So, when movie makers were casting the mega-blockbuster Suicide Squad, she was cast as Enchantress, mainly because of her model pout and her social media presence. She was Tweeting and posting to Instagram and gushing about the movie. Can she act? No, but she looks the part. Vanity Fair reported she was upset at the critical reaction to the movie in general and her “performance” in particular: “It doesn’t really matter what the critics say at the end of the day, it’s the fans that we made this movie for.” And the fans? The film has grossed over $740 million on a $175 million budget. Rotten Tomatoes gave her effort 26% (that’s out of 100).
13. Lindsay Lohan
She was an adorable Disney child star in 1998’s The Parent Trap. She couldn’t act, but being a cute kid, she got by. Then, five years later, she was a Disney kind of sanitized teenager alongside Jamie Lee Curtis’ mom in Freaky Friday. The only problem? Jamie Lee Curtis can act and Lohan looked, well, amateurish (but still cute). Somewhere along the line, she got blonde hot and landed several roles that displayed that face and that body to good effect, like when she starred alongside adult star James Deen in The Canyon. But by 2012, when she made Liz and Dick (as in Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton), Lohan’s slide into substance abuse and court appearances was well underway. The reviews were not just bad, they were horrific, with one critic calling it a cross between a trainwreck and a Saturday Night Live comedy skit. The Hollywood Reporter dismissed her “performance”, saying that she was “more memorable in the tabloids than she ever was as an actress”.
12. Kristen Stewart
She is darkly sexy and attractive and made a fortune for Hollywood with her pairing with Robert Pattinson in the Twilight franchise movies. But can she act? In a word, no. “Mention the name ‘Kristen Stewart‘ and you are sure to receive laughs, guffaws, and grunts galore. It is almost universally accepted that she is a ‘bad’ actress.” That according to Hollywood Movies. Fans (or anti-fans) say she has one facial expression, a flat personality, a persistent little stutter and an obsession with her hair in every role she has played. So what does no-emotion Stewart have to say for herself? Easy. She says she hates acting. It shows big time. And for the last Twilight movie she got 42%, but the movie made nearly $300 million.
11. Kate Upton
Other than the script, the directing and the acting for 2014’s The Other Woman was a great film. It involves a trio of women, one of which is married to a philanderer and the other two who are his bits on the side. Kate Upton “played” Amber, one of the delectable bits, and Cameron Diaz is the other side bit. Let’s cut to the chase and say that the three women form an alliance to bring the cheating jerk down. The reviews were bad, bad, bad. Cameron, they said, was getting too old to be the bit on the side and, according to The Hollywood Reporter, “Upton does what she’s called upon to do, look great in a bikini, and rarely has more than one line to speak at a time.” But who cares? On a $40 million production budget, the chick flick in bikinis grossed nearly $200 million.
10. Keeley Hazell
She was once in the running to play C.J. Parker (the role that went to Kelly Rohrbach) in the reboot 2017 film Baywatch. There was some Internet gossip about her paying Wikipedia to remove information about a s*x tape she reportedly was involved in. Let’s just say the girl is not a natural actress. Well, that’s something of an understatement. She’s reportedly pretty bad. But, in spite of the fact that her 2014 performance in Horrible Bosses got her a pathetic 34%, she keeps on acting. The English “actress” left hairdressing to become a nudie Page 3 girl in The Sun. Her assets, not her talent, took her to Hollywood. Oh yeah, her bra size is said to be 32F. We can’t find any mention of that s*x tape in her Wikipedia entry. So, who knows.
9. Karlie Kloss
She has been on the cover of British Vogue, has been the face of Donna Karan and Lanvin and, most importantly (?), she is best friends with the center of the universe, Taylor Swift. In 2015, Swift put her best bud in her video short Taylor Swift: Bad Blood. And because she has long legs, unusual beauty and 5.5 million followers on Twitter, she was cast alongside Ben Stiller and many, many others in 2016’s Zoolander 2. She showed up, looked gorgeous and delivered a few lines. Some say Ben Stiller should go away and stop making bad movies. Zoolander 2 is best described as a series of cameo appearances, by the likes of Willie Nelson, Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell and, of course, Kloss. The critics held their collective noses, saying it was worst than bad. Don’t quit the day job, Karlie.
8. Selena Gomez
If you are a cute kid who can sing or dance or something, you’re probably going to end up in the Disney universe. As a kid, Selena Gomez was on Barney and Friends, Hannah Montana and The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, before landing her own show The Witches of Waverly Place. What was required was being cute, wholesome and funny enough. Act? You mean you think Disney cared if you were no good as an actress if the ratings were good? Gomez is different because she is a bad actress who became an okay singer with a staggering social media presence. Hers is the most liked picture ever on Instagram. She recently has played a poor Depression-era mother in the film In Dubious Battle. Hollywood Reporter was less than enthusiastic, saying “Gomez’s line readings are OK-ish”. Stick to the okay singing and luscious Instagram posts is our advice. Her low on Rotten Tomatoes? Zero, zilch, nothing.
7. Demi Lovato
Oh dear. Another cute adorable kid who was on Barney and Friends, then went on to star with the Jonas Brothers in the Disney TV movie Camp Rock. She has remained a TV kind of actress, with appearances on Glee and Grey’s Anatomy. Like Gomez, Demi Lovato is a very bad actress and an okay singer that often lands roles because she can sing, looks cute hot and can sort of act. And then there’s the massive social media presence. With thanks to an old film critic, her acting skill can be said to run the gamut of emotions from A to B. But the “Singer, Songwriter, Actress, Entrepreneur, Philanthropist” that she proclaims herself to be has around 48 million followers on Instagram. With the Glamour cover she posted there, she can add model wannabe. Some might say that doing all those things means she does nothing well. That’s probably true, but still the sexy bedroom shot on Instagram means that our Demi is all grown up, rich and famous. And that’s the point.
6. Miley Cyrus
She was a teen pop star playing a teen pop star in Hannah Montana. Her dad is country singer Billy Ray Cyrus, so the young Miley Cyrus was pushed out onto the stage when she was still in elementary school. As Hannah Montana, she channeled Miley Cyrus. On Two and a Half Men, she was Miley Cyrus with another name. In fact, in most of her acting gigs she is still Miley Cyrus. So, you could say that she nails her performance as herself. But is that acting? In a word, no. She’s not just a bad actress. She’s a non-actress who bares her nipples, sticks her tongue out, does outrageous things to attract attention, and we almost forgot, has nearly 31 million Twitter followers. Did we mention the 50 million plus on Instagram? Is she a great singer? Let’s move on.
5. Megan Fox
She was the girl mechanic love interest of Shia LaBeouf’s character in 2007’s Transformers, leading to her being declared a new sex symbol in Hollywood. What about the acting? Don’t ask. Like Kristen Stewart, she regularly appears in “Worst Actress” lists, with critics citing flat performances, lack of emotion, and a tendency to appear awkwardly wooden. But, she looks good bending over the open car hood or astride that motorcycle — that’s the point. She did a second Transformers film, but Steven Spielberg demanded that she be fired from the third installment for comparing the director to Adolf Hitler. She is more convincing as a glamour model, having done spreads for Maxim and FHM. Some say her work in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles proves she certainly does a good job of… being sexy. She got a 38% on Rotten Tomatoes for that effort. Look at it another way: Her highest ranking on the site is 66%.
4. Emma Roberts
Her father is Oscar nominated actor Eric Roberts, and she calls Julia Roberts Auntie. Many say that the kind of movie an actress does tells the tale about how good of an actress she is. What would you say about Emma Roberts if we told you her acting gigs have included Scream 4 and Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac? She is another one who runs the emotional gamut from A to B, with wooden performances lacking in emotion or character. Is she just another pretty face? No, she does funny really, really well, as in TV’s Scream Queens, but that’s not acting. That’s being funny. She sometimes talks about leaving acting for a career behind the cameras. Some uncharitable souls might say she never “joined” acting in the first place. Her lowest rating on Rotten Tomatoes is a 3% for her 2010 movie Twelve.
3. Ariana Grande
Let’s start with the good news. She’s got 86 million Instagram followers and 42 million Twitter followers. And she’s a good singer. And she’s Italian-American sexy hot. So can she actually act? If you watch her on Scream Queens or Family Guy, or TV’s Sam and Cat, you would probably say she is doing a Miley Cyrus and just being herself with a different name. She is always the same character: Namely Ariana Grande. Can the girl belt out a song? Without a doubt. She started her singing career on the Broadway musical stage. Can she act? Sadly, no. But with her looks, her voice and her social media presence, nobody really cares. Things like upcoming TV movie Hairspray Live will be perfect for her skills: A little acting and a lot of singing.
2. Kendall Jenner
Why do you think the model of the moment, part of the Kardashian Klan, and social media superstar was asked to do TV’s Hawaii Five-0? Could it have anything to do with being a Kardashian or having 67 million Instagram followers and 20 million Twitter devotees? Well, in a word, yes. Now, unlike some other models, Kendall Jenner is not out to take any part. She is a model who occasionally does acting and, unlike Cara Delevingne who dubs herself a “model/actress”, Kendall knows her limitation. Besides, she can make more from endorsing Estee Lauder than slogging away trying to be an actress. Big sis Kim Kardashian West has done a bit of acting on TV. Again, like Miley Cyrus, she brilliantly plays being herself. Why does that not surprise us?
1. Camilla Belle
She grew up in Los Angeles and got the acting bug early. And she has been romantically linked to Joe Jonas. Camilla Belle’s first big break came in 2005 in the Daniel Day-Lewis movie The Ballad of Jack and Rose. Let’s just say that the titles of some of her less stellar movie gigs says it all: 10,000 B.C, Caveman, When a Stranger Calls. Rotten Tomatoes’ average for her performances in those three movies is just over 8%. She’s done some reasonably good work, but the kind of films she has been in has dragged her career prospects down. Darkly sexy, Camilla Belle usually gets cast in the love interest or girlfriend role. She was on People magazine’s ‘Most Beautiful People in the World’ list. Reprising Jennifer Grey’s ‘Baby’ in a remake of Dirty Dancing in 2010 is taking the young actress exactly nowhere fast.
