Nowadays, Geri Halliwell may be your average 44-year-old married woman with two children, but two decades ago she was Ginger Spice (!!!), which was pretty much like being a female superhero in the ‘90s. Halliwell was one of five members of the Spice Girls, which also included Emma Bunton as Baby Spice, Victoria Beckham (then Victoria Adams) as Posh Spice, Melanie Brown as Scary Spice, and Melanie Chisholm as Sporty Spice. With all their unique personalities, the girl band had a massive appeal to a wide audience. And when we say massive appeal, we really mean it. The Spice Girls sold 85 million records, which makes them the best selling female group of all time. In other words, girl power!
The Spice Girls’ pop songs, which boasted feminist lyrics, appealed to young girls, but the look of the Spice Girls obviously appealed to men. They were often seen sporting the bare minimal when it came to clothing, but that’s about par with being a pop star. When it came to being the sexiest, spiciest Spice Girl around, though, Ginger obviously took the crown. She not only dressed the part, but she also acted the part. Ginger exuded sexuality and spiciness in every single interview. She even pinched a royal’s butt (more on that later). Below are 15 photos of Ginger Spice being the sexiest and spiciest of the Spice Girls. You may wish it was 1996 again…
15. That Iconic Union Jack Dress Moment
Yes, you can totally see Ginger Spice’s underwear under the Union Jack dress, which is kind of the point. Also, it’s totally spicy.
At the time, Emma Poole was the Spice Girls’ stylist and had Ginger Spice set to rock a black Gucci dress. Halliwell thought the simple black dress was too boring for her Ginger Spice persona, so she decided to make something herself. With Union Jack tea towels, Halliwell and her sister Karen made the dress two nights before the performance. You read that right, she made that Union Jack dress out of tea towels.
The dress went on to be the most expensive piece of popstar clothing sold in an auction, as it went for $59,000. Yes, a dress Halliwell made from tea towels sold for $59,000. Let’s just say this, you have to be pretty hot to wear a dress so short that everyone can see your knickers.
14. Ginger Spice, The Bunny
Geri Halliwell never actually posed for Playboy, but rather she did a very hot photoshoot in a Playboy bunny costume. The above photo from the shoot is obviously very spicy. However, photos of Halliwell still did surface in Playboy.
Before her time with the Spice Girls, Halliwell worked as a nightclub dancer and presented on the Turkish version of Let’s Make a Deal, both rather spicy career choices. Her spiciest pre-Spice Girls move was posing in The Sun as a Page 3 girl. Halliwell was 19 at the time and the spread is very, very Playboy. In fact, it’s so Playboy-esque that both Playboy and Penthouse acquired the photos and reprinted them after her rise to fame with Spice Girls.
So, Halliwell’s always been rather spicy, long before becoming a Spice Girl. This may be what lead to her original name Sexy Spice, which was only changed Ginger Spice because it was more suitable for a younger audience.
13. Say You’ll Be There
If Ginger Spice in the “Say You’ll Be There” music video isn’t the hottest thing in the world, we don’t know what is. Of course, all of the Spice Girls look outrageously hot as they sing their catchy tune in the desert in this music video.
In the video, the Spice Girls are all dressed up as a band of female assassins/ninjas. They took inspiration from Pulp Fiction, in which Uma Thurman describes a group of foxy kick-ass women called the Fox Force Five. Pulp Fiction meets Spice Girls – it’s like everything ‘90s was rolled up together in one singular music video. Apparently, Halliwell was actually the one to come up with the idea of using Pulp Fiction as inspiration for the music video, which makes her all the spicier.
12. Reading, Robe And Boots
Geri Halliwell may not be showing too much skin in this photo, but she’s still very spicy. Also, she’s wearing red boots under her robe, which is weird, cool, and confusing all at the same time. Whatever the reason for her keeping her red boots on with her robe though, we approve.
Halliwell is also reading USA Today, which we love. The Spice Girls were not a group of unintelligent women. Yes, they sang catchy pop songs and paraded themselves around in revealing clothing, but they knew exactly what they were doing. They used the attention they gained from the short shorts and sexy music videos to promote positive ideals into the world like, for example, girl power. Halliwell has even been quotes as saying, “When I came out of my mother’s womb, I screamed, ‘Girl Power!’” That may be the spiciest quote of all time.
Geri Halliwell did not stop spreading her girl power message after the Spice Girls split. She went on to work with the UN to reduce maternal death, stop the violence against women, and stop the spread of HIV/AIDs. Ginger Spice was no dummy, and that’s very spicy.
11. Ginger Spice As A Femme Fatale
A lot of Ginger Spice’s looks came from an earlier period. Her Spice Girls persona was very much a modernized pin-up girl and ‘40s femme fatale character. With her fair skin, bright red hair, and red lipstick, she certainly looked the part. With her corsets that showed off her thin waist and ample curves, she also dressed the part. In the above photo, Halliwell is rocking some femme fatale vibes to the max. The black dress, Old Hollywood curls and black eyeliner just take you back to a time of black and white films.
Of course, there was nothing old fashioned about the way Halliwell acted. When she met Prince Charles – actual royalty – she pinched his butt and told him that he was “very sexy.” Halliwell clearly left an impression on the prince. When she left the band, Prince Charles – again, an actual royal! – sent Halliwell a letter saying that the Spice Girls would never be the same and saying, “What will I do without your wonderfully friendly greeting?”
10. Jessica Rabbit Vibes
Ginger Spice is rocking some major Jessica Rabbit vibes in the above photo. The strapless sequin red dress is like Jessica Rabbits’ dress literally came to life. Also, it’s the combination of two of the hottest red heads in history: Jessica Rabbit and Ginger Spice. Very spicy!
It was actually Geri Halliwell’s red hair and fair complexion that almost kept her from joining the group. In 1994, an ad was placed in The Stage, which read, “WANTED: R.U. 18–23 with the ability to sing/dance? R.U. streetwise, outgoing, ambitious, and dedicated? Heart Management Ltd. are a widely successful music industry management consortium currently forming a choreographed, singing/dancing, all-female pop act for a recording deal. Open audition. Danceworks, 16 Balderton Street. Friday 4 March. 11 am-5:30 pm. Please bring sheet music or backing cassette.”
Geri Halliwell didn’t go to the first audition because her face was too sunburned from a ski trip. Ginger problems, right? Apparently, she simply showed up to the second round because she’s spicy as hell. When they asked her how old she was, Halliwell replied with, “I’m as old as you want me to be. I’ll be 10 with big boobs if you want.”
9. A Natural Beauty
While many photos of Geri Halliwell feature her rocking full-on Ginger Spice makeup and clothing, this photo is more stripped down and it’s absolutely stunning. Without the makeup and the cleavage, Halliwell is just as beautiful as ever. It was this beauty that Prince Charles was obviously very into – well, it was that or the butt pinching that he liked. Halliwell also had another admirer in the form of Russell Brand.
After Russell Brand split from Katy Perry, he met Geri Halliwell at the 2012 Olympics. Brand and Halliwell were then spotted going on several dates, with Brand admitting in an interview, “I’ve got a crush on Geri. Everything in the world is how it should be.” I mean, who in the world wouldn’t have a crush on Geri “Ginger Spice” Halliwell? The relationship was incredible short-live and ended just two weeks later.
In 2015, Halliwell married Christian Horner, a race car driver. You know how when you’re little all girls want to be pop stars and all boys want to be race car drivers? Well, these two really fulfilled those childhood dreams and then they got married. Match made in heaven.
8. Bringing All The Spice
This is one of the most famous posters of the Spice Girls and it’s a great representation of all of their identities. Scary Spice is wearing a weird patterned jumpsuit, looking about as crazy as she always did. Honestly, girlfriend needed to renegotiate her contract because the shit they dressed Scary Spice in was dreadful. Baby Spice is rocking her usual baby doll dress and pigtails, looking like the most innocent person walking the earth. Sporty Spice is… sporty. Posh Spice is doing her whole fashionable thing. Then, there’s Ginger Spice, who is bringing all the spice. She rocking the shortest orange shorts that have ever been invented and showing off her tight stomach.
Unfortunately, Geri Halliwell had really struggled with her body. She’s been outspoken about her battle with bulimia, admitting to weighing just 98 lbs at one point. With all the pressure put on pop stars to look perfect (Remember when everyone flipped out over Britney Spears gaining weight?), it’s not shocking to hear that Halliwell had a hard time with her body. Fortunately, Halliwell says she now has a great relationship with her body and food, crediting motherhood for her new outlook.
7. Still Hot As A Blonde
Ginger Spice not being a ginger almost feels like a crime, but we have to admit Geri Halliwell still looks hot AF as a blonde. If the dress Halliwell is wearing looks familiar, it’s because you’ve seen it on Jennifer Lopez.
Jennifer Lopez showed up to the 2000 Grammys rocking this sheer, plunging dress and the world basically exploded. Google actually credits Lopez wearing this hot dress as the reason you can search for photos via Google. Apparently so many people were searching for pictures of Lopez in this dress that Google was like, “Hey, there should be an option to just search for photos.”
Well, wait a minute. Geri Halliwell actually wore the dress first. A month earlier, Halliwell rocked this dress at a Cannes award show. It’s an awkward “Who Wore It Better” battle since Lopez, like, revolutionized the Internet by looking so hot, but blonde Halliwell is still spicy as hell in this dress.
6. The Fittest Spice
Geri Halliwell may now actually be Sporty Spice instead of Ginger Spice. Girlfriend is ripped. In fact, her body looks even better now than it did when she was a member of the Spice Girls.
How does Geri Halliwell keep her ab game on fire? She jogs every single day to stay fit. Halliwell also adds yoga and Pilates into the mix to help her keep her body toned. Oh, and girlfriend doesn’t skip any days… ever. During her and Christian Horner’s honeymoon, she posted a photo to social media of her working out. If you workout on your honeymoon, you’re obviously very committed to staying in shape. She also practices a low carbohydrate diet, which means no pasta for Ginger Spice. Cutting out carbs and exercising on vacation may sound like a drag, but Geri Halliwell’s body has never looked better. Still spicy, even after all these years.
5. She’s A Freckle Baby
We rarely get to see photos of Geri Halliwell’s freckles, because makeup and stuff. While she’s obviously wearing makeup in this photo, her adorable freckles are still peeking through. Also, her red hair is absolute fire in this photo.
After their debut album was a mega hit, the Spice Girls began world domination – and we’re not even kidding when we say world domination. They signed sponsorship deals with Pepsi, Walkers, Impulse, Cadbury, and Polaroid. They released a book, which sold 200,000 copies on the first day. Their follow-up album, Spiceworld, was another smash hit, with the first single “Spice Up Your Life” topping the charts everywhere. They did a world tour. They released their cult classic film Spice World, which was a box office successful despite poor reviews.
Guys, they were so on top of the world that Nelson Mandela, the famous anti-apartheid revolutionist, called the Spice Girls “his heroes.” The Spice Girls literally ruled the entire world.
4. Female Friendship Is The Hottest
In this behind the scenes photo from the “Say You’ll Be There” music video, Ginger Spice and Baby Spice are showing each other some real love. Also, we totally have to mention the fact that in the music video, Baby Spice’s assassin alter-ego was “Kung Fu Candy,” which was totally fitting of her Baby Spice personality.
During their time in the band, Geri Halliwell and Emma Bunton were extremely close, but that didn’t stop Halliwell from leaving the girl group. On May 31, 1998, it was announced that Halliwell was leaving the band stating, “Sadly I would like to confirm that I have left the Spice Girls. This is because of differences between us. I’m sure the group will continue to be successful and I wish them all the best.”
Halliwell had claimed that she suffered from exhaustion and needed a break, but there were rumors of a rift in the band due to power struggles. This was a huge, huge news story. It was like the Brad Pitt/Jennifer Aniston/Angelina Jolie love triangle, y’know before that ever happened.
3. American Love
After rocking the Union Jack dress, Ginger Spice showed America some love by rocking this American flag-ish body suit. She obviously looks spicy as hell, with the bodysuit showing off her curves. We have to say one thing about Ginger Spice, she always knew what to wear in order to get everyone’s attention. Also, the fur coat on top is about as ‘90s as you can get. Of course, Ginger Spice is also making a peace sign, which was the symbol for girl power put forth by the Spice Girls.
When Halliwell left the band, the girl power connection was broken. Things were not cool between her and many of the members. Recently, Emma Bunton revealed, “I was so close to Geri, she was like my older sister. It took me a while to forgive her. We probably didn’t speak for about a year.”
Um, Geri Halliwell and Emma Bunton not speaking is like a rip in the space-time continuum. Fortunately, the pair have since reconciled and the space-time continuum has been repaired. They are back to being as close as ever. In fact, when Halliwell gave birth to her daughter (girl power!) in 2006, she asked Emma Bunton and Victoria Beckham to be the godmothers. Uh, that little girl is going to have the coolest life ever. We’re not jealous or anything…
2. The Hottest Mom
Guys, whose mom dresses this hot? I mean, a short skirt and knee-high boots? Moms are, like, not supposed to be this hot. Okay, we’re lying. Moms in Hollywood are totally this hot – Megan Fox, Sofia Vergara, just to name a few. Still, you have to admit that Geri Halliwell is one hot mamma.
Halliwell’s daughter, Bluebell Madonna, because of course that’s her name, was the product of a short-lived romance with Sacha Gervasi, a British journalist and screenwriter. The relationship between Gervasi and Halliwell was so heated that there were even rumors Halliwell wouldn’t let Gervasi in the hospital room to see the baby.
On January 21, 2017, Halliwell gave birth to a son, Montague George Hector Horner, who is her first child with Horner. Obviously, she was coolsies with Horner being in the hospital room since he’s her husband and all.
1. The Spiciest Spice Of All Time
Guys, we all just have to admit that Ginger Spice is, perhaps, the spiciest woman of all time. I mean, just look at her. She has all the spice in all the right places.
Geri Halliwell joined the Spice Girls and became Ginger Spice in 1994. It was then announced she was leaving in 1998. That means that in a mere four years (just four years!), Halliwell and the rest of the Spice Girls took over the world. They were only a band for four years, but they were still the most successful girl group of all time. Isn’t that mind blowing?
Ginger Spice was spicy not just because she looked sexy all the time, but because she promoted girl power. She used her public image to make the world a better place and didn’t stop doing it after the Spice Girls broke up. She is an activist, who is beautiful on the outside and the inside.
Stay spicy, Geri Halliwell. You’ll always be Ginger Spice, the Spiciest Spice, to all of us. (Also, how many times have I written a variation of the word ‘spice’ in this article? A LOT.)
