The ’90s were full of beautiful starlets, whether they were acting in our favorite movies or singing in our favorite music videos. In fact, we could probably make a ten page long list filled with our favorite ’90s celebrity crushes. Now that it’s 2017, we can’t help but wonder about our past dream girls and think about where they are nearly twenty years later. Unfortunately, many of them aren’t quite as well-liked as they were back in the day.
There are many different reasons why our love for the hottest ’90s celebs turned sour in recent years. In some cases, it’s because they’ve turned into divas, criminals, or they’re simply just not interesting anymore. Sometimes, sexy celebs lose their luster because they veer away from the persona they once were and turn into someone we don’t recognize or relate to anymore. But just as we change as we get older, so do those in the limelight. The only difference is that we get to judge them for it.
Take a ride down memory lane as you look back at 15 of some of the hottest ’90s celebs. But be warned: they may not be as awesome as they used to be.
15. Stacey Dash
Stacey Dash is probably one of the most hated ’90s celebs to make our list. You may recognize her pretty face from the iconic ’90s movie, Clueless. Dash played Dionne, the outspoken, hilarious best friend to Cher (Alicia Silverstone). Over the years, we’ve watched Stacey Dash act in various films, television shows, music videos, and sketches. And we definitely didn’t fail to notice that she is just as gorgeous today as she was in her younger years.
As big of a fan we were all these years, our love for Dash took a violent turn in 2014. Dash was hired as a “cultural analysis and commentary contributor” for Fox News and would often have the opportunity to speak her mind on various hot topics. Dash got lots of attention whenever she spoke on political issues, like her dislike of former president Barack Obama. But Dash really felt the heat when she declared that Black History Month shouldn’t exist and that the BET Awards were unnecessary and even damaging to society. Having worked with BET over the course of her career, she definitely upset quite a few people. Even Fox News cut ties with Dash and didn’t ask her to come back in 2017 anymore.
14. Lindsay Lohan
Lindsay Lohan first came on the scene nearly twenty years ago and we couldn’t help but fall in love with her. Lohan introduced herself to the world in the Disney remake of the classic family film, Parent Trap. Her cute freckles and red hair charmed all of us and we stuck around as she started to grow up into a mature, very gorgeous young woman. She wowed us all in hilarious movies like Freaky Friday and the cult classic, Mean Girls. It’s safe to say that by the time she was 18, we all had massive crushes on Lohan.
As many celebs do, Lindsay saw the dark side of fame…fast. Lohan started hanging out with socialites like Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. And before we knew it, she was getting completely inebriated at clubs and getting caught possessing drugs. Her image quickly changed from sweet, innocent, and sexy, to idiotic and pathetic. Today, no one in Hollywood wants to work with Lohan anymore. Thanks to her bad attitude and horrible work ethic. Will Lohan ever make it back onto the scene? Maybe. But we can’t promise that we’ll like it.
13. Mariah Carey
Believe it or not, Mariah Carey was once the pop star everyone aspired to be. In the ’90s, the incredible singer released hit after hit while seducing us with her vivacious personality and sultry curves. Who could forget her episode of MTV’s Cribs where she rode on her elliptical in heels and chilled naked in her luxurious bath tub? Unfortunately, those sexy moments moved into the backseat after we watched Mariah’s career turn into a complete train wreck.
Over the years, we’ve witnessed some truly embarrassing moments when it came to Mariah Carey. Most notably, her Christmas performance in 2014 where she completely butchered her signature holiday tune, All I Want for Christmas Is You. In addition to the fact that she’s apparently lost her singing chops, she’s become known for being a total diva and being a nightmare to work with. Whether she’s starting up drama on American Idol or bossing around her personal staff, we can’t help but be completely over Mariah.
12. Meg Ryan
Meg Ryan was America’s sweetheart when it came to romantic comedies in the late ’80s and ’90s. We watched her adorable smile in films like Sleepless in Seattle, French Kiss, You’ve Got Mail, and so many more. We all adored Ryan. I mean, what’s not to love about her? Her spunky haircut and adorable temperament was so effortlessly charming and we’d have watched a thousand movies of her if we could.
But these days, you may have noticed that Meg Ryan looks a little different than she used to. Sure, she’s a bit older, but that’s not it. It’s very obvious that Ryan has gone under many different plastic surgery procedures and she just doesn’t have that cute look anymore. Maybe that’s why she hasn’t been appearing in as many movies lately. In the last five years, she has had nothing but little bit parts (which is great and all), but it seems that her days of being the adorable leading lady are over.
11. Gwyneth Paltrow
It’s safe to say that Gwyneth Paltrow is one of the most disliked actresses in Hollywood…at least to us, mere civilians. But believe it or not, there was a time when she was one of the most popular actresses on the red carpet. We watched Paltrow give award-winning performances in films like Shakespeare in Love, Emma, and Bounce, just to name a few. She proved that she actually had the acting chops to match her beautiful face and we really did adore her for it.
But as the years passed, we couldn’t help but notice that Paltrow was quickly growing more and more unlikeable. Word around Hollywood was that Paltrow was very difficult to work with due to her extreme high maintenance. Paltrow also seems to be extremely arrogant and loves telling other people how they should be living their life. She even called her divorce from long time husband, musician Chris Martin a “conscious uncoupling.” Just call it a divorce, Paltrow. You’re not anything special.
10. Amanda Bynes
Amanda Bynes started out in the ’90s as a young comedian who was bound for comedy greatness…or so we thought. She had the kids rolling on Nickelodeon’s sketch show, All That. And before we knew it, Amanda was growing into a really gorgeous, hilarious young woman. She was the leading lady in successful films like She’s The Man, What a Girl Wants, and Hairspray. She was the perfect combination of cute and silly and we just couldn’t get enough of her.
It’s hard to say what exactly changed for Amanda Bynes in her twenties, but she made a complete 180-degree turn in her career and personality. In the last five years, Bynes has become known more for her crazy and offensive outbursts on Twitter than for her quirky characters. Bynes also changed her appearance, dying her huge head of fake hair and piercing her cheeks. Bynes got sucked into the club scene and became known for messing around with drugs. It’s hard to say whether or not Bynes will ever make it back into her fans’ good graces. But honestly, it seems like the actress needs more professional help than more fame.
9. Tori Spelling
Tori Spelling first caught our attention as the naive Donna Martin on the hit show, Beverly Hills, 90210. Tori was the daughter of the extremely popular television producer, Aaron Spelling. While Tori was never necessarily considered the best actress in the world, she was generally well-liked and we couldn’t help but notice her sweet smile and big beautiful eyes. In the ’90s, Tori’s career really took off and she could be seen making small appearances in all kinds of shows and movies.
In the last decade or so, Tori settled down and centered her entire life around her family as we saw on her slew of reality shows, all under the Tori and Dean franchise. Tori’s husband, Dean McDermott, had an embarrassing affair, leaving Tori to decide whether or not she wanted to stay with him for the sake of their four kids. Tori chose to stay with her husband, as we were forced to watch hours of television of her crying big fat tears and going back to the jerk. In addition to her marital drama, Tori became estranged from her mother, Candy Spelling, and speaks openly about their financial troubles. It’s pretty safe to say that Tori will air just about any of her dirty laundry to stay relevant.
8. Gwen Stefani
Gwen Stefani used to be the Queen of Ska back in the ’90s with her band, No Doubt. We couldn’t get enough of her spunky style and her effortless ability to be one of the guys with her bandmates. For a long time, Stefani proved to be a real rock n’ roller and has earned respect from her peers. She had an incredible stage presence and was generally an all-around likable celebrity.
In the last decade or so, we’ve noticed that Gwen Stefani’s style has dramatically changed both visually and musically. She traded in her blue hair and awesome rock rhythms for repetitive novelty pop songs and a more glamorous lifestyle. Many say Stefani has sold out over the years, writing obnoxious meaningless music to ensure her spot in the limelight, and weight in her wallet. Most recently, Stefani has become known as one of the judges on NBC’s The Voice where she began her odd relationship with fellow judge and famous country star, Blake Shelton. Seems like Gwen Stefani has lost her spunk and in turn, our interest.
7. Lil’ Kim
Lil’ Kim really paved the way for many of the incredible female rappers on the scene today. She held her own in an industry that literally featured only male rappers. Yet, she managed to hold her own and become respected by her peers and audiences. Lil’ Kim also became known for her relationships with the late Notorious BIG. And while we all respected her crazy licks, her s*x appeal was strong…very strong.
Like most musicians, Lil’ Kim’s fame started to dwindle as newcomers took over. But as we watched Kim walk the red carpet at various award shows, we couldn’t help but notice a dramatic change in her appearance. Her skin appeared to be lighter and her features drastically altered. We’re not sure what happened to Lil’ Kim but she’s just not the same.
6. Winona Ryder
Actress, Winona Ryder showed such promise back in the ’90s. She appeared in blockbuster hits like Little Women, Heathers, Beetlejuice, Mermaids, and so many more. Ryder became a well-known actress rather quickly and was respected in the thespian community. She really proved to be a great actress and we were sure she’d go on to become one of the greats at the turn of the century.
Unfortunately, events in Ryder’s personal life drastically changed her reputation and completely changed the way we thought of her. In 2001, Ryder was arrested from a luxury department store in Beverly Hills, CA after attempting to shoplift over $5,000 worth of merchandise. Whether she was mentally ill, broke, or wanting attention the embarrassing ordeal cost Ryder her career. Since then, Ryder has managed to have movies and shows here and there but she was never quite the same in our eyes.
5. Jennifer Love Hewitt
In the ’90s, Jennifer Love Hewitt posters were on every teenage boy’s wall. The adorable actress appeared in countless teen movies and TV shows and definitely got our attention. She really made a splash after appearing as the hottest girl in school in the hit film, Can’t Hardly Wait alongside actors Ethan Embry and Seth Green. We fell even more in love with Hewitt as we watched her run in the rain in the teen thriller, I Know What You Did Last Summer.
But what on earth happened to Jennifer Love Hewitt? Over the years, she appeared in B movies and shows, but somehow she had lost her spark along the way. Hewitt has managed to star in shows like Ghost Whisperer and the short-lived Client List. However, none of her shows seem to resonate with audiences and we honestly don’t really care too much about the actress these days. It’s hard to say if Hewitt will ever make another comeback, but do we really care?
4. Thora Birch
Thora Birch was one of our favorite sweethearts back in the ’90s. We watched her grow up onscreen into a truly gorgeous young woman. From her start in films like Now and Then to her awesome performances in American Beauty and Ghost World, we were definitely on-board the Thora Birch train. Birch was alluring in everything she worked on. Something about her alternative style and mysterious demeanor captivated all of us and we couldn’t help but become big fans.
In later years, we learned that Thora Birch was an absolute pill to work with and we saw less and less of her on the silver screen. In 2010, Birch was fired from the Broadway production of Dracula for her odd behavior. Apparently, Birch’s father and manager was assaulting the actors in the show and acting inappropriately with Birch. It’s really a shame that Birch got so weird over the years. We really thought she’d have a long lucrative career.
3. Tara Reid
When it comes to actresses throwing their careers away for being reckless and stupid, Tara Reid has led the way. We first started crushing of Reid back in the ’90s when she appeared in teen flicks like American Pie and Van Wilder: Party Liaison. Tara’s raspy voice and kind blue eyes caught all of our attention and we loved watching her play the innocent ingenue in our favorite teen movies.
After her stint in the limelight, Reid started partying hard and embarrassing herself, looking like a hot mess all over town. For some reason, Reid couldn’t find any respectable acting roles and found herself taking truly pathetic jobs. Most recently, Reid has starred in the ridiculous film series, Sharknado on the SyFy network (for some reason the film’s fifth installment is currently in production). Reid often has a bad attitude in interviews and seems to be a rather unpleasant person.
The ’90s R&B scene was bursting with young female talent, and singer Brandy was definitely getting her piece of the pie. Brandy’s sweet voice captured all of our attention and her catchy tunes were playing on our car radios and Walkmen all day long. Brandy really rose to fame when she recorded her hit duet with singer Monica called The Boy is Mine. In addition to her successful music career, Brandy wowed us with her comedy chops in the hit sitcom, Moesha. When it came to pop stars of the ’90s, Brandy fit the mold—cute face, sweet demeanor, and massive s*x appeal.
In the last ten to fifteen years, all of us have wondered what the heck happened to the famous R&B singer. It’s been years since we’ve heard Brandy on the radio or have seen her pretty face on TV. Recently, Brandy’s album sales have been pretty underwhelming, to say the least. While we loved Brandy’s music in the ’90s, we’re not really sure if there’s still a place for her in today’s music world.
1. Angelina Jolie
Angelina Jolie was probably one of the biggest A-list celebrities in the ’90s and she still is today. But is she just as well-liked as she used to be? Back in the ’90s, Jolie took our breath away with her stunning good looks and jarring yet exciting behavior. She starred in hit blockbusters like Girl, Interrupted, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, and Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Even when Jolie shocked us when she kissed her brother on national television and wore her ex-boyfriend, Billy Bob Thornton‘s blood in a vial around her neck, we couldn’t help but be intrigued by her.
Unlike in the ’90s, Jolie’s behavior has become less interesting and more disappointing. Many fans turned on her in the 2000’s when she seemingly took away Brad Pitt from his then wife and America’s favorite sweetheart, Jennifer Aniston. Jolie started having a colder persona and became generally less likable by the public. Many celebs have openly expressed their disdain for the actress, calling her snobby, cold, and overtly politically charged. We want to like Jolie for her good looks, but when it comes to her personality, we can’t really seem to get on-board.
