Child stars have a life experience which is totally unique to them. None of us can imagine what it’s like to grow up in the spotlight – to have your every move analyzed from a very young age. The pressure is intense, and some psychologists even claim that your development is halted when you become famous. If you reach fame in your 20s or 30s, it’s not so much of a problem – you’ve already done a lot of maturing and you’re ready to face the world. But when you’re a teenager, or even a pre-teen, it can be highly damaging.
That’s why it probably doesn’t come as much of a surprise that some former child stars still engage in petty and childish behaviour in the public eye. Their feuds can quickly become public, and reach new heights with a back-and-forth in the media. These spats may be stupid, but they’re pretty entertaining for us to watch from the side-lines. Whether they are carried out through interviews, over Twitter, or even in person, they can get pretty intense – which just makes it all the funnier for people who don’t know them personally.
Even though these stars have the same shared experience of growing up in the public eye, that isn’t enough to make them like one another. We’ve gathered 15 pairs of former child stars who just can’t stand one another – and aren’t afraid to let the world know it. Get ready to delve into some of the cattiest celebrity fights of all time!
15. Lindsay Lohan And Amanda Bynes
These two women are poster stars for the downside of getting into fame early. Both started with acting careers very young, and blossomed into huge stars by the time that they were in their teens. As they reached their 20s, both crashed and burned in spectacular and very public ways. Though as Lohan pointed out, her fall from grace was a lot swifter and more painful. She tweeted, “Why did I get put in jail and a Nickelodeon star has had NO punishment(s) so far?”. This was a very thinly veiled dig at Bynes, who decided to hit back in her own way. A friend of hers once revealed that Bynes wanted to talk about nothing but Lindsay, calling her names and dissing her constantly in conversation. Even though they are the same age and have had very similar experiences, it seems that these two can’t even stand the sound of each other’s name.
14. Miley Cyrus And Emily Osment
These teens became stars together on Hannah Montana back in 2006, and they had trouble getting along right from the start. They apparently argued constantly on set, growing frustrated with one another as filming went on. In her autobiography, Miles to Go, Miley wrote, “There were times when I didn’t think we could ever be friends. We just couldn’t figure out how to get along.” It seemed like it was a case of personalities clashing, along with the added pressure of having to fit work and school together alongside growing fame. Funnily enough, the two now claim to have put everything behind them, and are now as close as sisters thanks to their shared bond of filming the show for so long. It’s altogether possible that that isn’t really the case after all, but we’ll wait for the next story about them to break before we can pass judgement.
13. Bella Thorne And Zendaya
Another pair of teen stars, another child-friendly show that didn’t go as well behind the scenes as you might have thought. When the two were cast alongside one another to film the first season of Shake it Up!, they were pitted against one another by the producers. Thorne spilled the beans about how they just couldn’t get along in an issue of J-14. She said, “Zendaya and I were put in a very unfortunate position where we were kind of forced to compete against each other, which made the whole first season of the show just very awkward for us.” This is another couple who have apparently made up and become fast friends, though it’s not clear how long that peace would last if they ended up working together on a new project. It’s easy to see how a pair of impressionable young girls could be manipulated into hating one another, but those feelings can linger even when they have ostensibly been extinguished.
12. Raven-Symone And The Cheetah Girls
This set of four girls seemed closer than any group of friends have ever been if you watched their show. But those glossy smiles and fixed stares hid something a little different behind the scenes. Suspicions were raised when Raven, the most famous member, somehow didn’t show up in the Cheetah Girls film. Why could that be? She eventually broke her silence on the subject to discuss why she had not been invited to take part. She was quoted as saying, “There were territorial issues. There were cat fights. It was not all peaches and cream off camera.” When two girls are pitted against one another in a competitive showbiz environment, it’s bad enough. But four girls all at once on the same show? Ouch. We wouldn’t even want to be a fly on that wall for fear of getting caught in the crossfire. Needless to say the girls aren’t in touch these days.
11. Kelly Osbourne And Christina Aguilera
Kelly Osbourne first became known as a teen on her family’s reality show, while Christina Aguilera joined The Mickey Mouse Club aged 13. But the two have never been friends, and they have carried on a years-long feud which seems to be based around which one of them is the heaviest. It started when Kelly made fun of Christina’s Christmas album on The Osbournes, with Christina using the 2003 MTV movie awards as a chance to call Kelly fat and taunt her. When Christina put on her own weight, Kelly was quick to react, dissing her spectacularly on Fashion Police. She suggested that Christina was outwardly becoming the person that she had always been on the inside, and added, “She called me fat for so many f**king years, so you know what? F**k you, you’re fat too!”. Don’t expect these two to be exchanging Christmas cards or dieting tips at any point in the future.
10. Miley Cyrus And Selena Gomez
Oh, Miley – another feud? This time it’s Selena Gomez, who started her acting career as a child in Barney and Friends and went on to take a leading role in Wizards of Waverly Place. The bad blood between these two started as it does for most teenage girls – over a boy. Miley dated Nick Jonas for two years, until a bad break-up sent him right into the arms of Selena. Obviously, Miley wasn’t happy with the situation at all. They were previously friends, and to have your friend end up with your ex so soon after a split is a pretty big no-no. Miley made fun of Selena and Demi Lovato on YouTube with a parody video, and even brought a cardboard cut-out of Selena on stage to sing “FU” to during a tour. It seems that these two just can’t get over the broken hearts that split them up in the first place.
9. Ariana Grande And Victoria Justice
Starring together on Victorious as young teens was not the friendly experience that you might imagine, according to Ariana Grande and Victoria Justice. Their spat came to light when Grande took to Twitter and threw shade on Justice for refusing to take part in the show’s tour. Justice then immediately responded, expressing disappointment at the fact that Grande had seemingly thrown her under the bus. Grande later said that she had been bullied on set, with a lot of people assuming she was referring to Justice. While Justice cleared up those rumours and stated that she was not the bully in question, she did also admit that the two girls had their differences during filming. Grande had apparently apologized for the way people interpreted the article – but she did so via text, showing once again that the two are not and have never been besties. It’s clear that there’s no love lost between them.
8. Britney Spears And Katy Perry
Britney is one of the best-known child stars out there, having started as a Mouseketeer alongside names like Christina Aguilera and Justin Timberlake. Katy Perry also started young, having released her first album as a teen. But now Katy Perry has reignited their feud, which has been mostly passive for a few years, with yet another jibe in a long list about Britney’s 2007 breakdown. Talking about her new hairstyle, she said, “The only thing left to do is shave my head which I’m really saving for a public breakdown.” Later in the same day, she explained why she was taking a break from music: “Well, that’s called taking care of my mental health… I haven’t shaved my head yet!” Since Katy comes from a strict religious upbringing, Britney appears to have hit back in a subtle way on Twitter. She posted, “Her mouth speaks from that which fills her heart. Luke 6:45”.
7. Lindsay Lohan And Tara Reid
Tara Reid made her acting debut aged just 6, and went on to have a lot of roles as a young child and teen. It’s hard to remember that now, but she was as much of a child star as Lindsay was – if not more! But the two just don’t get along, which almost doesn’t make sense on paper. They are both known for wild partying and a career that has been left in tatters. Apparently, the two run in the same circles, but it hasn’t helped. Tara says that Lindsay crashed a car belonging to one of her friends, and added, “we don’t really like each other that much.” She also called her a mean drunk, paranoid, and accused her of ruining people’s phones at parties by dropping them into ice buckets. She also added that she feels her bad rep stuck around after just a few incidents, while Lindsay apparently keeps getting away with bad story after bad story.
6. Demi Lovato And Selena Gomez
Both Demi and Selena starred together as kids on Barney & Friends, and they went on to star in other shows together as well. But despite their long friendship, things seem to have gone sour at some point. They have gone through several periods of animosity, one of the most notable being around the time that Selena and Justin Bieber were kicking up a lot of drama. Demi reacted by unfollowing Selena on Twitter, then posting a meme with the words “swimming away from the bulls***” and the caption “BYE.”. It seems that even a long friendship isn’t enough to be able to rely on someone when you need their support the most – and in a public forum, no less. No wonder their relationship has been rocky ever since. No one could blame Selena for feeling betrayed or let down. No matter how many times they appear to make up, it all falls apart again later.
5. Britney Spears And Justin Timberlake
Who can fail to remember Britney and Justin’s high-profile relationship? They were celebrity sweethearts who met as Mouseketeers and went on to be pop’s favourite couple. For a few years, everything seemed sweet as could be. Then they spilt, amongst rumours of cheating on Britney’s side. This was only heightened when Justin filmed his music video for “Cry Me A River”, which saw a suspiciously Britney-looking actress caught in the act with a secret lover. Needless to say, things haven’t been good between the two of them since. Justin has even been caught wincing, looking furious, and very uncomfortable during Britney’s performances at awards shows and events in the time since their split. The recent Britney Ever After Lifetime movie suggests that their split was over an affair with a choreographer, though it was made without Britney’s collaboration. The two even supposedly ended up engaging in a furious dance-off when they ran into one another at a club – which is just about the most noughties thing we can think of.
4. Britney Spears And Christina Aguilera
Britney and Christina have had a very long relationship since appearing as Mouseketeers together, and their paths have continued to cross again and again over time. While they have offered support to one another every so often, their spats are more legendary. Christina has accused Britney of acting like “trailer trash”, and said that her engagement ring to Kevin Federline looked like “she got it on QVC”. She also called her “distant” while they were rehearsing THAT MTV VMAs performance, saying, “She seems to me like a lost little girl, someone who desperately needs guidance.”. Britney hit back in response, saying, “When someone has been rude to you so many times, it’s like, ‘You know what, Christina, I’m really not about the fake anymore.’”. Christina even mentioned that she had stayed away from working with producer Max Martin until 2012 because she didn’t want to be associated with his previous collaborators – naming Britney and Justin specifically.
3. Drake And Chris Brown
Drake first came to fame as an actor when he was just a teenager, getting cast in Degrassi: The Next Generation as Jimmy Brooks. It was not until 6 years later that he would launch his music career. Chris Brown, on the other hand, was just 13 when he got his first record contract, and launched his debut album at 16. The two ended up fighting over Rihanna, who has previously dated both of them. Chris dissed Drake on the radio, but Drake was listening. He hit back with plenty of comments of his own, and a lot of others got in on the action too. Most notable was an encounter in a nightclub in 2012, when a note which read “I’m f***ing the love of your life” was passed from one to the other and sparked a brawl. Neither of them came out of it particularly well, but Brown managed to get himself in hot water with misogynistic tweets that left him in a bad enough position that he had to delete his Twitter for a while.
2. Selena Gomez And Jake T. Austin
They were co-stars on Wizards of Waverly Place, and you might have thought that playing siblings would make them close in real life. Unfortunately, however, Gomez and Austin appear to have only picked up on one aspect of the sibling relationship: fighting with one another. When Selena left the show to pursue more mature roles, Jake expressed his displeasure publicly. He tweeted, “When an artist’s definition of ‘growing with their fans’ is creating content they aren’t even allowed to see…”, clearly a burn towards Selena. This is even though he has said in interviews that she is like a real sister to him. Well, when you love someone like a sister, you don’t publicly bash them for their decisions. On the other hand, when you hate someone like a sister, all bets are off! Selena didn’t appear to respond to the burn, which is even more of a burn in itself.
1. Michael Jackson And Corey Feldman
Michael Jackson is perhaps the ultimate child star. Coming up with his family band, the Jackson 5, he became a household name and was one of the biggest stars the world has ever seen before his death. Corey Feldman, in turn, led a very high-profile life before starting to fall out of favour as he got older. When he wrote a book spilling the beans on his early life in Hollywood, along with some allegations of abuse towards him and his other young co-stars, his relationship with Jackson came up. He told Hollywood Reporter in a now-famous interview, “he was a friend and our relationship did not end well. We had a falling out, and that was due to the fact that there was definitely a dark side to him.” Their feud lasted until Jackson’s death, so the pair sadly never made up and became friends again before it was too late.
