15 Famous Female Stars Who Were Shamed For Putting On Weight

Entertainment

Celebrities are just normal human beings who have a huge following and know how to make a lot of money from their skills, although they do have to work extra hard to continue being as good as they are. That said, the rules at work in society do not apply to celebrities in the same way they apply to the rest of us, because we expect so much more from them compared to anyone else.

When it comes to weight, society judges celebrities harshly, at times never taking the time to consider the reasons for their weight changes. Female celebrities will be called all sorts of names for adding a few pounds even when they are pregnant or going through health challenges – a situation that is both sad and unfair. Since we expect them – especially female celebrities – to be as thin as a rail, most of them end up starving themselves to near death and having to go through hell to get over their baby weight.

Here is a list of female celebrities who, at some point in the recent past, gained a bit, or even a lot, of weight for whatever reason and had to endure harsh criticism from the media and from haters. Almost all these celebrities look great today and whatever they went through to gain some weight is something every normal human being goes through.

Which of these celebrities do you think is the best inspiration by their attitude towards weight gain and weight loss?

15. Raven-Symoné

Via Raven-Symoné | KC Undercover Wiki | Fandom powered by Wikia

We all loved watching the kid-friendly show That’s So Raven on the Disney Channel from 2003 to 2007. Around the same time, Raven took part in very successful films such as Dr. Dolittle (1 and 2), College Road Trip, The Cheetah Girls (1 and 2), For One Night, Revenge of the Bridesmaids and many other films. Raven also went into music, where she produced four studio albums and four soundtrack albums, all of which were relatively successful. Towards the end of 2016, Raven left her gig at The View to go to Los Angeles to focus on producing and starring in a That’s So Raven spin-off. Over the years, Raven has gone through many changes, including an increase and a decrease in weight. Raven has been one of those thick girls since she was young, and pressure from her critics and TV executives forced her to lose weight on several occasions, but would at times let herself go.

14. Britney Spears

Via UKMIX • View topic – Britney Spears

Britney is a pop icon with numerous fans across the globe, people who love her because she has great music and is an even better dancer. She is also an actress, since she has been in movies such as Longshot, Crossroads, Austin Powers in Goldmember, Pauly Shore Is Dead, and Fahrenheit 9/11. Britney was so slim and fit in 1999 and 2000, the time she broke into international success with her first and second albums, but is today far from that size owing to a number of reasons. Giving birth to her two sons in 2005 and 2006 is a huge contributor to her adding weight, her personal struggles, poor eating habits, and inconsistent working out programs led her weight to shoot up and down to where she is right now. Britney is working hard to regain her slim and fit look, and judging from her 2016 VMAs onstage performance, her progress is commendable.

13. Jessica Alba

Via Celebuzz

Jessica Alba is one of the most beautiful women on the planet, and many if not all men would agree with that statement. Jessica has always had the perfect body all through her life, which is one of the reasons her acting career has skyrocketed throughout the years. Some of the great movies she has been part of include Mechanic: Resurrection, The Veil, Barely Lethal, Little Fockers, Valentine’s Day, Good Luck Chuck, Fantastic Four, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Honey, Sin City, and so many other movies. Owing to just how perfect Jessica’s body is, the slightest increase in weight for whatever reason is enough to attract everyone’s attention, which was the case when she got pregnant with her two girls in 2008 and 2011. In her first pregnancy, Jessica gained 55 pounds and tried her best to stay away from the media. Jessica thereafter got back to her original weight and looks as stunning as ever.

12. Jennifer Hudson

Via Vettri.Net

Jennifer Hudson might not have been the skinniest girl in Hollywood, but her recent drastic weight loss is enough to feature her on this list. Since winning her Oscar owing to her amazing performance in Dreamgirls and becoming an American Idol star in season three, her big and beautiful voice complemented her size, which was one of the reasons she did not receive too much criticism for her weight. Hudson got to a point where she wanted to lose weight and become like other thinner girls that she worked alongside, but her wrong approach of depriving herself of the foods that she loved was clearly not working for her. Hudson gave birth to her son, David Daniel Otunga Jr. in 2009 – a year that she was probably the biggest size ever. However, since then, she has been losing a lot of weight, and people are even referring to her as skinny.

11. Janet Jackson

Via Hollywood Street King

Janet is an amazing performer, popular for her innovative, provocative, and socially-conscious performances, which have made her one of the most prominent pop stars of the last 30 years. Janet Jackson is also an actress, appearing in movies such as Nutty Professor II: The Klumps, Why Did I Get Married?, Why Did I Get Married Too? and For Colored Girls. Janet has always been fit and slim, owing to the demands of her career, but on some occasions, she has let herself go. Over the last few months, leading up to the delivery of her first baby Eissa Al Mana, Janet had gained a shocking amount of weight, which some experts had claimed would have posed a danger to her pregnancy. However, all went well and she is now focusing on raising her one-month-old son and probably getting back into shape. There is no shame in baby weight because it is normal. Ignorant people who don’t understand what women go through should just keep their opinions to themselves.

10. Jennifer Love Hewitt

Via Los Angeles Times

Jennifer Love Hewitt is a great actress who began her career in commercials and in Disney’s Kids Incorporated. She later took part in Party of five when she was in her teens and even starred in I Know What You Did Last Summer and its sequel. In the recent past, Jennifer has been part of so many movies and series such as The Truth About Love, Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties, If Only, The Tuxedo, Criminal Minds, The Client List, Ghost Whisperer and many others. In 2004, there were rumors that Jennifer was going to lose her role in Criminal Minds because she could not lose weight after giving birth. Although those were just rumors that did not see the light of day, they were a sure indication that her weight had become a problem. Jennifer did eventually leave the show, but it was because she had gotten pregnant again and needed to focus more on being a parent than on her career.

9. Jessica Simpson

Via TONIC GOSSIP

As far back as we can remember, Jessica Simpson has always been a symbol of beauty, even appearing on the Maxim Hot 100 list a few times and topping it in 2004. However, in 2007, Simpson’s weight started to increase – a trend that continued to reach its peak in 2009 through her transition to country music. The media and other critics criticized Simpson’s weight so much that she started defending herself, claiming that she was comfortable with her weight. The criticism and negative talk about her weight continued through to the birth of her two children in 2012 and 2013, but since then she has started to lose weight. Although lifestyle changes caused her weight to increase and, of course, having two babies back-to-back must have contributed to her weight problems, Simpson has since changed her ways and is on her way back to being the slim beauty we once knew.

8. Hilary Duff

Via Celebitchy

Hilary Duff is one of those stars in Hollywood who began acting at a young age, and managed to transition into adult roles in movies and television shows, without losing her mind or falling out of love with her fans. Duff is an inspiration to a number of the Disney stars we have today – teenagers who want to remain famous and successful for all the right reasons. Duff is also a successful singer-songwriter, who has sold over 15 million records to date. Duff is on this list because she also got totally fat when she was pregnant and, although she got rid of most of the weight she had gained, there is some excess weight that has remained. When a celebrity admits that she is no longer concerned with being the skinniest person, you know that she has given up. Tabloid pressure is what forces her to hit the gym and try to stick to a diet.

7. Kelly Clarkson

Via Today

Kelly Clarkson is without a doubt one of the most talented singers in the world today, starting her career by winning American Idol’s first season, and becoming the runner-up at the World Idol in 2003. Since then, her music career has skyrocketed, earning her numerous accolades including two Academy of Country Music Awards, four American Music Awards, twelve Billboard Music Awards, three MTV Video Music Awards, and three Grammy Awards. Her acting career is not at the level of her music, but she is a great actress, taking part in movies and series such as Nashville, Duets, American Dreams, and From Justin to Kelly and many others. In 2016, Kelly was almost unrecognizable, owing to her significant change in weight – something very normal in pregnant women. She gave birth to a beautiful baby boy in April 2016 and is now taking steps towards losing all the baby fat she gained. However, losing weight is hard, even for celebrities.

6. Anna Gunn

Via Hollywood Celebrities

Anna Gunn is a Primetime Emmy Award winner for her performance as Skyler White on the highly successful AMC drama Breaking Bad – a series she was a part of from 2008 to 2013. Anna has also been part of many other successful movies and series in Hollywood such as Equity, Enemy of the State, Gracepoint and Deadwood, among many others. Anna is on this list because of her drastic weight gain while filming Breaking Bad and a subsequent weight loss immediately after. Her weight had nothing to do with her role and, unlike most women on this list, it was not about a pregnancy either. Anna was ill when filming the show, and her medication, which included cortisone, made her puff up and gain considerable weight. Since she got better, she stopped using the medication and slimmed down considerably. However, she has started adding a bit of weight since then, and we can only hope that she is fine.

5. Beyoncé Knowles

Via BuzyMummy

Beyoncé Knowles shot to global stardom back when she was a member of Destiny’s Child – an R&B girl group that became the best-selling girl group of all time within a very short period. However, Beyoncé has achieved so much more on her own, selling over 100 million records as a solo artist, winning numerous awards, becoming the highest paid black musician in history, being voted as one of the top 100 most influential people in the world, and becoming one of the most powerful female entertainers in the last two years. Beyoncé has starred in movies such as The Fighting Temptations, The Pink Panther, Dreamgirls, Obsessed, Life Is But a Dream, and many others. Very few celebrities can match up to the discipline that Beyoncé has, even when it comes to managing her weight. However, when she was expecting her daughter Blue Ivy, her weight shot up to almost 200 pounds, but immediately after giving birth in 2012, she started getting back to her original size. Beyoncé is now pregnant with twins. We can expect her to get really fat in the coming months, but there is no shame in this.

4. Kirstie Alley

Via Celebitchy

Since Kirstie Alley is not one of the younger actresses on this list, her experience in film, as well as her history with weight gain and weight loss, is definitely longer than all these other actresses. Although she started acting in 1979, her role as Lieutenant JG Saavik in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan ended up being her big break. She has starred in numerous other movies and television shows, received different award nominations and even won a few – including two Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe Award. Kirstie’s weight problems began in 2003 when her body started to respond to the obsessive feeding she was used to with no prior consequences. She lost 75 pounds between 2004 and 2007, only to gain so much more weight by 2009. In 2011, she claimed to use Organic Liaison products to lose weight – products from a company she founded – while also exercising a lot and training extensively. Although she lost 50 pounds in 2015, images on social media show that she is now adding weight dangerously and really needs to stop.

3. Mariah Carey

Via The Dawg Shed

There is no doubt about Mariah Carey‘s ability to sing, a gift that she began sharing with the world since breaking into stardom in 1990. Mariah is one of the all-time best-selling music artists, having sold over 200 million records and becoming the third best-selling female artist in the US in history. Mariah is also a great actress, taking part in movies such as Precious, The Butler, A Christmas Melody, and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping among others. As Mariah has been performing on stage since 1990, it would not be fair to expect her to remain the same size after 27 years. However, apart from the baby weight she gained when having her children, Mariah’s relationship problems that led to the breakdown of her marriage to Nick Cannon sure left her broken. In early 2015, Mariah began binging on unhealthy foods to try and deal with her emotional problems – the result of which was a significant gain in her weight.

2. Mindy Kaling

Via SheKnows

Vera Mindy Chokalingam, who is popularly known as Mindy Kaling, is an actress, producer, and writer. Mindy created and starred in The Mindy Project – a sitcom that she also served as a writer and executive producer on. Mindy also took part in The Office – an NBC sitcom where she played the role of Kelly Kapoor – and participated in writing, directing, and producing. Concerning her weight, in 2014, Mindy said that it’s among the things she’d like to change about herself – although she didn’t feel the need to become skinny or beat herself about it. In March 2015, Mindy posted a few images of herself online and it was evident that she had lost a lot of weight and was looking great. However, Mindy appeared to have gained a bit of weight towards the end of 2016 and regained her usual shape. Mindy does not have any children so far so, unlike the other women on this list, she cannot claim to be struggling with losing baby weight.

1. Tyra Banks

Via PK Baseline

When you hear the name Tyra Banks, it is likely the first thing you will think of is the hit TV show America’s Next Top Model, although that thinking might change to Celebrity Apprentice in the next few years. Tyra is one of the most successful former supermodels of her time, having taken her career to heights that hardly other supermodels have ever dreamed of. Since her time on the runway is long gone owing to many reasons including her age, it seems like her desire to starve herself, as models are said to do, is no longer her thing. Tyra has gained weight in the last few years, and in her case, we are allowed to exaggerate because she was a supermodel. A photo of Tyra wearing a bikini with the words “Tyra Pork Chop” made rounds on social media a while back, a photo that showed just how far Tyra had fallen. Tyra seems to be okay with the weight she has these days since she looks good and now she is allowed to enjoy her meals just like the rest of us.
